This study investigates using technology to promote authentic and meaningful learning in applying a peer assessment rubric for a public speaking assessment in a higher education institution in Brunei Darussalam. Three hundred six undergraduates from Universiti Teknologi Brunei's Schools of Business, Computing, and the Engineering Faculty conducted the assessments in real-time using online-based rubrics accessible via their smartphones or laptops. Comparisons were made between the lecturers' marks and students for each rubric criterion, and a set of questionnaires was distributed to investigate students' perceptions toward the peer assessment after the assessment. The results indicated a variable discrepancy between assessments by the lecturers and students for the rubric criteria. While in some disciplines, peer marking was found to overmark compared to the lecturer by more than 15%, in other cases, the marks were similar. Comparison between peer and lecturer assessment indicated that the level of agreement was sensitive to the lecturer, but less so between student cohort when assessed by the same lecturer. When differences were observed, there was no apparent discrepancy in an agreement between aspects of the rubric which evaluated content or delivery. Students’ feedback revealed a positive response towards peer assessment but highlighted issues surrounding the technological aspects of the implementation process.

This article presents an evaluation of the use of peer and self-assessment as part of the learning process in a public speaking assessment coursework, with students from two departments taking part. Students were assessed by themselves, their peers and the lecturer using an online platform, Google forms, utilizing a set of rubrics. The marks were compared between markers to identify similarities and differences. After the process, student feedback on the experience was obtained using a questionnaire utilizing the Likert seven point scale to rate different questions. Analysis of the marks awarded found that whilst there might be correlations between different markers (i.e. peer – self) for marks on certain subsections of the work, there was no overall correlation between marks. Student perceptions to the exercise indicated that the use of rubrics was well received; students considered it a fair assessment method and it provided information on how to perform well in the assessment.

Recently cloud computing services have been adopted by many people and organizations. Google Drive is one of the cloud computing platforms that has gained popularity among students in higher education institutions. This study examines the perceptions and the current usage of Google Drive among students in higher education institutions in Brunei Darussalam. The study adopted the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and two additional factors namely perceived speed of access (PSA) and perceived security (PS). The primary objectives of this research are to explore the factors affecting the usage of Google Drive by the students in higher education institutions in Brunei, to investigate the perceptions of the students on the use of Google Drive and to find whether attitude influences the behavioral intention to use Google Drive among the students. The findings of this study connote that the students’ perceptions on Google Drive have a significant influence towards their attitude to use Google Drive which in turn influence their behavioral intention to use Google Drive in the future.

Students' application for higher education admission is significantly increasing from time to time. As a result, it effects the increasing financial cost to provide the facilities, human resources, and others. A student with high potential but cannot afford to cover the expenses, has no opportunity for his further studies due to their financial problem. Financing problems for higher education institutions is not a new problem, in fact, it becomes a big issue nowadays. Brunei Darussalam is fortunate since the government still provides free education for locals who fulfill the requirements. However, currently, there are complaints from the parents on educational financing. The same situation will happen in Brunei if we do not find a solution that can solve the problem. This research will identify to what extent waqf credibility can solve the financial problems for higher education students. The research methodology will be used as a descriptive qualitative by analyzing the content by reviewing informative secondary data such as journals, paper works, and relevant articles. In order to solve the financial problems in a higher education institution, waqf contribution is very significant and should be expanded for higher education development as an ummah development agent.

Middlesex University, Mauritius Branch Campus was setup in 2010, and as any credible British higher education institution, its aim has been to improve students’ learning as well as students’ experience. One such venture has been the creation of the Student Learning Assistant (SLA) scheme. The pilot project was run from January 2013 to May 2013 and the scheme is ongoing for the new academic year which started in September 2013. The purpose of this reflective paper is to explain thoroughly the implementation process of the SLA scheme and to recommend any improvements that can be instigated to overcome the challenges that the authors (SLA coordinators) faced when overseeing the running of the SLA scheme.

Introduction. Today, the significant direction of scientific search in the field of health preservation is to study the interrelation of functional characteristics and motor skills of students of different constitutional types and health groups. Specific morphological and physiometric characteristics of an organism and belonging to a certain somatotype should be taken into account when organising physical training in higher education institutions. The aim of the research was to establish the degree of correlation of motor and functional characteristics of an organism of students with different constitutional types and health groups in order to improve an algorithm of planning and effective safe implementation process of physical training in a higher education institution.Methodology and research methods. Male-students (n = 1300) aged 17-20 years old of the 1st (n = 1012) and 2nd(n = 288) functional groups of health were examined. Constitutional types were determined according to M. V. Chernorutsky’s scheme with the calculation of values of Pignet index and Robinson index. Methods of the statistical analysis with the application of StatSoft Statistica 6.1 and Microsoft Excel programmes were used to process the obtained results in the process of diagnostics. The reliability of distinctions of average values was estimated by means of parametrical methods with the calculation of Student’s t-test.Results and scientific novelty. Motor features and functional characteristics of the cardiorespiratory system and physiometric parameters of firstand secondyear students (engaged in the programme of academic discipline “Elective Courses on Physical Culture and Sport” atIrkutskNationalResearchTechnicalUniversity) are recorded and considered. Reliable differences in the values of indicators of motor tests and functional characteristics of organisms of young people with different constitutional types are identified. In both health groups, the experiment allowed authors to reveal higher physical and functional preparedness of young men of normosthenic and asthenic constitutional types compared to their fellow hypersthenic students. Motor characteristics and functional reserve capacities of the cardiorespiratory system were higher in normosthenic and asthenic students of the 1st functional group in comparison with the representatives of the 2ndfunctional group of the same constitutional types. The conclusion is drawn on close interrelation of somatotypes with motor and functional characteristics of organisms of students engaged in physical culture.Practical significance. The research material and results contribute to the elaboration and development of the methodology of individually differentiated physical training of students in higher education institution.

The paper describes the method for increasing the level of self-organisation in students which has been developed by the author. It also contains the method testing results and presents the prospects and risks teachers could face while applying the method in a higher education institution. The purpose of this study is to find out the prospects and risks of applying the method for increasing the level of self-organisation in students and to determine the ways of reducing the risks. Methodology. The author points out the learning approaches which were the basis of developing the method and describes diagnostic methods for determining students’ self-organisation levels. The work focused on increasing each student’s initial level consists of a theoretical and a practical part and includes project activities on creating a study guide. The results of the study. The method developed proved to be effective. It was established by diagnosing the final level of self-organisation in students in the experimental and control groups. The paper considers the advantages of the method among which there is universal character, flexibility, improvements to teacher’s and students’ professional competence, etc. At the same time it is necessary to be aware of the risks due to the increased amount of teacher’s work and the fact that students’ work within the project tends to be monotonous. In conclusion, the prospects of the method for increasing the level of self-organisation in students are related to its advantages and the final results of the work. The risks of its use can be reduced with the help of the measures proposed in the paper.
