Through the study of form, we explore how relations constitute persons for the Huni Kuin of Western Amazonia. Shamanistic song, and the role in it of patterned design, reveals a specific aesthetics that emphasizes processes of becoming, transformation, and figure/ground reversal. Since bodily substances and actions of others affect the ‘thinking body’, well-being depends on making visible the relational network that exists inside and outside one’s embodied self. An aesthetic battlefield unfolds where the doubles of ingested substances invert the predatory relation and come to envelop the ‘eye soul’ of the one who ingested them with their design and ornaments. This setting allows us to address the fractal quality of personhood and the permanent disequilibrium between symmetrical and asymmetrical relations in Amazonia.

This paper considers the concept of active ageing from the perspective of relational sociology. Active ageing is the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation, and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age. Ageing occurs in a relational network (the family, society), with a whole range of reciprocal mutual interactions (support, care, etc.). Starting from an operationalization of the relational components (Donati 2011) of the active ageing process, SHARE data were considered, as well as data collected for the Italian survey Non mi ritiro: l’allungamento della vita, una sfida per le generazioni, un’opportunità per la società (“I’m Not Withdrawing: The Lengthening of Life, a Challenge for the Generations, an Opportunity for Society”, 2013–2014, N=900), in which the way Italians and other Europeans face ageing was explored. Finally, the focus was ona sub-sample of older adults active in various relational networks, such as their families (grandparents and caregivers aged 65+ of the older generation) and third-sector organizations. By embracing a relational (intergenerational) lens it was possible to grasp the differentiation that characterizes the ageing process, the transformations and standstills of individuals, as well as different orientations and ideas that facilitate or hinder the path to active ageing.

Abstract Continuity is seen as an important aim for the quality of youth-care services. However, views on continuity are predominantly guided by experts, without much attention to user perspectives. This paper focuses on youngsters’ experienced continuity in relation to youth-care services. Twenty-five youngsters, who were in residential care or reached by low-threshold youth services, were interviewed about their experiences in and out of care. In thematically exploring the biographical narratives for important experiences of continuity, three major themes emerged: (i) the need for footholds in moments of existential chaos, (ii) the importance of timing of interventions to match the youngsters’ perspectives and (iii) the importance of the youngsters’ impact on their own care pathways. This study shows the need for support that is imbedded in a relational network within the context of youngsters in vulnerable situations. Rethinking youth services towards a better connection with these contexts is essential. Furthermore, the amount of control youngsters experience in their care interventions seems to be beneficial to the experience of continuity. It is argued that continuity should be seen as a process, in order to leave more space for negotiation and flexibility throughout the youngsters’ experiences in youth-care services.

Scholars have suggested that the elderly need close, intimate relationships to enhance the quality of their lives. These relationships can be found in closest friendships. In the present study, we aimed to determine self-perceived variable patterns in the closest friendship relational network of both, one, or neither gender among nonconfined aged males. Specifically, we examined the most frequently perceived variable patterns with reference to the particular structural friendship unit, then reported on the similarities and/or differences among the groups.

e19090 Background: Patients in rural areas have reduced access to high-quality cancer care, which contributes to rural-urban disparities in cancer mortality. Telehealth technologies can connect providers across rural and urban communities. Methods: In 2006, one author (LH) established an oncology program in Truckee, CA, a rural community with a single critical access hospital without oncology services. The program joined with 4 other facilities comprising the UC Davis Cancer Care Network, a central element being daily participation in structured virtual tumor boards addressing the four sites (colorectal, prostate, lung, & breast) that compromise ~80% of all cancer diagnoses. Remote telemedicine clinics outside the primary catchment area were also established to serve the mountain communities of Quincy, Portola, Loyalton, and South Lake Tahoe, CA. We assessed the reach and quality of the cancer program through referrals, in-migration, clinical trial accruals and accreditations. Results: The combination of virtual tumor boards and telehealth clinics associated with growth of the program to 3 medical oncologists, 1 radiation oncologist and expansion into a 20,000 ft2 facility. Total new patient visits, the percent of patients coming from zip codes outside of the primary catchment area, clinical trial enrollments, and quality accreditations steadily increased (Table). The program is accredited by the Commission on Cancer with commendation, ASTRO’s APEX, ASCO’s QOPI and CancerLinq programs, and is a G02Foundation for Lung Cancer Community Center of Excellence. Conclusions: We termed the knowledge dissemination that occurs through a telehealth connected rural oncology program involving a Comprehensive Cancer Center partner and disseminated rural telemedicine nodes a “synaptic knowledge network.” In this implementation, it enhanced the reach and quality of care as measured by volume, in-migration, clinical trial activity, and national quality accreditations. Application of synaptic knowledge networks to other rural sites is a promising strategy to reduce rural-urban disparities in cancer care. [Table: see text]

IntroductionThis study is to systemically analyze the association of CYP1A1 gene MspI and Ile462Val polymorphisms with cervical cancer susceptibility.Material and methodsThe literatures about the associations between CYP1A1 polymorphism and cervical cancer were retrieved through PubMed, Embase, Chinese biomedical literature database, Wanfang database, Database of Chinese Scientific and Technical Periodicals (VIP) and China Knowledge Network. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium test was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies, and the data in the studies selected were analyzed by Stata 12.0 software. Potential publication bias was assessed with funnel plots and a modified Egger’s linear regression test.ResultsA total of 17 studies were enrolled in this analysis. There were 14 articles on MspI locus polymorphism, including 2448 cases and 2520 controls. We found significant association between MspI locus polymorphism and cervical cancer susceptibility (C vs. T, OR 1.333, 95% CI 1.214-1.464, P≤0.001; CC vs. TT, OR 1.962, 95% CI 1.571-2.450, P≤0.001; CC/CT vs.TT, OR1.591, 95% CI1.406-1.800, P≤0.001; CCvs.TT/CT,OR1.429, 95% CI 1.177-1.736, P≤0.001). Totally, 11 articles, including 2137 cases and 2116 controls, analyzed the Ile462Val locus polymorphism and the risk of cervical cancer. The result showed significant association between Ile462Val locus polymorphism and cervical cancer susceptibility (Val vs. Ile, OR 1.338, 95% CI 1.199-1.493, P≤0.001; ValVal vs. IleIle, OR 1.576, 95% CI 1.188-2.090, P=0.002; ValVal/ValIle vs. IleIle, OR 1.498; 95% CI 1.299-1.728, P≤0.001).ConclusionsBoth MspI and Ile462Val polymorphisms of CYP1A1 gene are associated with the risk of cervical cancer.

During the past investigations of immunoferritin localization of intracellular antigens in ultrathin frozen sections, we found that the degree of negative staining required to delineate u1trastructural details was often too dense for the recognition of ferritin particles. The quality of positive staining of ultrathin frozen sections, on the other hand, has generally been far inferior to that attainable in conventional plastic embedded sections, particularly in the definition of membranes. As we discussed before, a main cause of this difficulty seemed to be the vulnerability of frozen sections to the damaging effects of air-water surface tension at the time of drying of the sections.Indeed, we found that the quality of positive staining is greatly improved when positively stained frozen sections are protected against the effects of surface tension by embedding them in thin layers of mechanically stable materials at the time of drying (unpublished).
