This chapter reviews social psychological research on help giving and helping relations from the 1950s until today. The first section considers the conditions under which people are likely to help others, personality dispositions that characterize helpful individuals, and motivational and attributional antecedents of helpfulness. The second section looks at long-term consequences of help and examines help in the context of enduring and emotionally significant relationships. Research has shown that in the long run help can increase psychological and physical well-being for helpers but discourage self-reliance for recipients. The third section analyzes helping from intra- and intergroup perspectives, considering how its provision can contribute to helpers’ reputations within a group or promote the positive social identity of in-groups relative to out-groups. Help is thus conceptualized as a negotiation between the fundamental psychological needs for belongingness and independence. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

The authors make the argument that trauma journalism should be taught as part of the postsecondary curriculum in journalism schools. As part of that education, students will learn that coping with the psychological effects of repeated exposure to such events can have long-term impacts on their mental health. As Kohlberg and Rest found, students in college are at a pivotal point in their moral development. Education takes place as adolescents are developing key psychological skills, including moral and ethical decision-making. Collegiate journalists should be gaining these valuable reasoning skills as it relates to covering traumatic events.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to verify the differences between Primary and Secondary Education students in motivation, basic psychological needs, responsibility, classroom climate, prosocial and antisocial behaviors, and violence. To do this, a sample of 397 students were administered to whom a series of validated clients was administered in order to compare the results with three centers with similar sociodemographic characteristics. The average age of the participants was 11.24 years (SD = 1.74), with 288 Primary students and 109 Secondary or basic FP. The results obtained statistically significant differences (p < .01) in the most self-determined motivation, the satisfaction of basic psychological needs, classroom climate, and responsibility in favor of the Primary group, finding higher values (p < .01) in Violence and antisocial behaviors in the high school group. It is concluded that the primary stage is a turning point in the face of the different behaviors that develop in secondary school, so it is necessary to encourage programs and initiatives that serve to maintain these aspects and that are not reduced in the secondary stage.
