The Impact of Transformational Leadership and Team Innovation on Team Performance: Empirical Evidence from Malaysia

Objective – Leadership and innovation are two related concepts which have gained a lot of interest among researchers focusing on management and entrepreneurship. Research on these topics are important for the development of the dynamic workforce and are useful to various organisations. However, in the real world, the effectiveness of employee performance is considered as unsatisfactory meaning there is room for improvement. Methodology/Technique – Previous literature had found that Transformational Leadership and Team Innovation are among the key factors which can be used to improve employee performance. This study will examine and test the relationship between Transformational Leadership and Team Performance to understand how Team Innovation mediates this relationship. A total of 197 samples are collected from employees in Multinational Companies (MNC). The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Findings – The findings indicate that Transformational Leadership has a significant positive impact on Team Performance. Further, Team Innovation mediates the relationship between Transformational Leadership and Team Performance. Novelty – The major implications of these findings are further explored. In particular, this paper contributes to leadership literature by recommending that team leaders aim to inspire and empower employees to achieve organizational goals. Type of Paper: Empirical. Purpose – There are few studies that have studied the relationship between Transformational leadership (TL) and organisation commitment (OC), but there are very few studies on the service sector especially in the Indian context. This study aims to fill the gap in literature by empirically examining the impact of four dimensions of TL using Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) on the Affective Commitment (AC) of the employees, within the context of the service sector in Bengaluru. Design/methodology/approach – A total of two hypotheses were proposed for testing transformational leadership using Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) questionnaire, (Bass and Avolio, 1997) and five items of affective organization commitment developed by Allen and Meyer (1996) was used for affective commitment. The questionnaire was administered to 210 employees working in various industries in the service sector in Bengaluru to measure the impact of TL on the AC of the respondents. Findings – The analysis of the data collected shows that TL has a positive impact on the affective commitment of the employees. In particular, the results of an empirical investigation revealed that individualized influence and individual consideration by the transformational leader had a significant impact on the affective commitment level of the employees. The employees in the hospitality industry had a difference in opinion compared to IT, Banking & education sector employees on the intellectual stimulation by the leader and their affective commitment towards the organization. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the existing literature of leadership and OC by providing practical evidence leading to the improvement of information and the understanding of the relationship between TL and AC.


The purpose of this research is to seek and identify the impact teamwork has on organizational performance. The research to understand the teamwork quality, team cohesiveness and team performance in employee performance, identify the positive or negative effects of teamwork on employees and to examine the impact of teamwork on organization performance. Therefore, it is to determine how teamwork could effect and improve University employee’s performance within the organization. In fact, it is also to understand on how methods like teamwork quality, team cohesiveness, and teamwork performance have could be used to have positive effects in employee overall performance. The research study used correlation techniques in order to analyze the relationship between two variables that was Teamwork and Organization Performance. In many of the journals and article that was collected, there was clear evidence that teamwork and other measures of team performance are positively related with organization performance. The study of the research shown that there was a significant positive impact of teamwork on organizational performance and employee’s overall performance.

This study examines the impact of both transformational leadership (TFL) and transactional leadership (TCL) on employee intention to stay (ITS) in deluxe hotels. It also examines the mediating role of organisational commitment (OC) in the relationship between leadership styles, i.e. TFL and TCL, and ITS. A pre-tested questionnaire survey was self-administered to front-line employees in deluxe hotels in Egypt, where these leadership styles were prominent. The key findings showed that TFL has more positive impact on OC and ITS than TCL. Affective commitment (AC) and normative commitment (NC) were found to partially mediate the relationship between both leadership styles and ITS. Employees exhibit higher ITS when they perceive proper leadership practices, especially TFL. Hotel executives should place more emphasis and investments on TFL to effectively achieve OC and positively influence ITS which is critical for the hotel industry that often suffers from high employee turnover.

Abstract Research background: Although a number of studies have been conducted on the relationship between public expenditure and economic growth, it is difficult to tell with certainty whether or not an increase in public expenditure is good for economic growth. This lack of consensus on the results of the previous empirical findings makes this study of paramount importance as we take stock of the available empirical evidence from the 1980s to date. Purpose: In this paper, theoretical and empirical literature on the relationship between government expenditure and economic growth has been reviewed in detail. Focus was placed on the review of literature that assessed the impact of government spending on economic growth. Research Methodology: This study grouped studies on the impact of public expenditure on economic growth based on their results. Three groups emerged – positive impact, negative impact and no impact. This was followed by a review of each relevant study and an evaluation of which outcome was more prevalent among the existing studies on the subject. Results: The literature reviewed has shown that the impact of government spending on economic growth is not clear cut. It varies from positive to negative; with some studies even finding no impact. Although the impact of government spending on economic growth was found to be inconclusive, the scale tilts towards a positive impact. Novelty: The study provides an insight into the relationship between public expenditure and economic growth based on a comprehensive review of previous empirical evidence across various countries since the 1980s.

The objective of this article is to evaluate the impact of Transformational Leadership on Organizational Innovation, Supply chain Integration and Organizational Performance. Research was carried out on 562 Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises. We use Smart PLS 3.6 software for data analysis. The results show that Transformational Leadership had a positive impact on Organizational Innovation, Supply chain Integration and Organizational Performance. In addition, the Supply chain Integration plays a role as a complete mediate in the relationship between Organizational Innovation and Organizational Performance. Size has a statistically significant moderate role on the relationship between Organizational Innovation and Organizational Performance. Finally, the leader qualification has a statistically significant moderate role in the relationship between Transformational Leadership and Organizational Performance. From the above results, we recommend the leaders of Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises to improve leadership capacity, apply a transformational leadership style to improve organizational performance.

The nature of the relationship between income inequality and economic growth, first formalised by Simon Kuznets in 1950, has come under much debate of late. At present, one understanding of this relationship is that given by what Oded Galor called the ‘modern perspective’, which, pointing the direction of causation from income inequality to economic growth asserts that the former imposes a significantly negative influence on the latter. To investigate the same in the context of India, subsequently, this study adopts the typical cross-country approach taken by other studies in this area and estimates the nature of the aforementioned relationship across a cross-section of Indian states. The results, however, disappointingly contrary to the ‘modern perspective’, show a strong significant positive impact of the existence of inequality on growth rates of Indian states, which, if anything, statistically asserts the existence of a trade-off between the two. It has been agreed upon by the researchers that leadership style in an organization causes the quality of employee performance. Moreover, organizational citizenship behavior is also determined by the style of leadership in an organization. The question is what type of leadership style is determining these behaviors. In this study, the impact of transformational leadership on employee's task performance and citizenship behavior is studied. Transformational leadership was found to have a significant positive impact on employees OCB and performance further; it was also found out that OCB moderates the relationship of transformational leadership with employee's performance. It is concluded that there may be some incongruent behaviors or perceptions among the leader and his subordinates.

The aim of this study is to determine the impact of transactional and transformational leadership styles on employee performance in Nigeria Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research, Kaduna State. A structured questionnaire was used to sample respondents using simple random sampling technique. Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X) was used to measure leadership styles and employee performance was measured using salary, job experience and job satisfaction. A total of 230 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents. Structural equation model was used to analyze data using partial least squares method SmartPLS2. The result showed that transformational and transactional leadership styles has a significant and positive impact on employee performance. Therefore, it saw recommended that Nigeria Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research should practice transformational leadership styles to improve employee performance in the organization in Kaduna State.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the transformational leadership and service quality in the businesses active in the field of e-commerce with the mediating role of trust and team performance. Design/methodology/approach Survey questionnaires were administered on a 384-subject sample of the employees of the teams working in electronic businesses in Iran. The structural equation modeling and partial least square techniques were used to analyze the data. Findings The results showed that transformational leadership has a positive impact on service quality and improves team performance. The effect of transformational leadership on the interpersonal trust and the trust on the team performance are also positive and significant. In summary, the improved performance also has a positive impact on service quality. Research limitations/implications The main limitation is the assessment by questionnaire because the questionnaires measure the attitudes of individuals, not the facts as they are, and the attitudes of individuals usually involve personal judgments and prejudices in the research. Also, examining the research model in different cultural domains may provide different results because of being influenced by different cultures. Hence, the authors recommend that the findings should be examined in other communities with different cultures. Originality/value Evaluating the impact of the transformational leadership on service quality (SERVPERF scale) by a survey of team trust and performance in e-business is an innovation in the influence assessment of these variables. The present research is considered applicable to the management science as new findings in organizational behavior studies and recognition of transformational leaders, as well as the positive impacts of the characteristics of them on individuals and followers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of business volatility on employee performance. Design/methodology/approach The authors use regression analysis to examine the authors’ research question. Findings The results suggest that business volatility has a significant and positive impact on employee performance. Furthermore, the authors find that the relationship between business volatility and employee performance is stronger for larger firms and firms with higher labor intensity. Originality/value The study links and contributes to two streams of literature: employee/labor cost management from the accounting literature and business volatility from the management literature. Whether business volatility affects employee performance remains an interesting question that has not been definitively answered empirically. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first empirical study that directly examines the relationship between business volatility and employee performance at the firm level.
