scholarly journals Public Perception on Motorcyclist Safety Prevention Methods using Structural Equation Modelling

Motorcycle-related road accidents are the most frequent cause of road traffic injuries reported in Malaysia. One of the key approaches of the Safe System strategy used internationally to address the road casualty reduction goals and targets for interim and long term planning was by improving the vehicle safety system. In this study, feedback regarding the prevention methods that could help reduce the occurrence of motorcycle accidents was obtained from drivers and motorcyclists. In total, five components of safety prevention methods were established and quantitative data were measured from a set of questionnaires distributed all over Malaysia. The questionnaires were designed to understand the public perception on effective methods to address the current road safety issues. Items in the questionnaire were analysed by Structural Equation Modelling using AMOS 25.0 to enable an informed decision based on the data obtained. The primary objectives of this study are to assess the validity and reliability of the measurement model using structural equation modelling based on the public perception of motorcyclists safety prevention methods. In this study, all the measurement models achieved their validity and reliability at the required level. The fitness index based on CR and AVE values were higher than 0.50, thereby indicating that the measurement model achieved the level of acceptance required. In addition, the constructed variables were statistically significant based on the factor loading values that were greater than 0.6 for each construct.

SUMMARYStructural equation modelling and survey data were used to test determinants' influence on farmers' intentions towards Escherichia coli O157 on-farm control. Results suggest that farmers more likely to show willingness to spend money/time or vaccinate to control Escherichia coli O157 are those: who think farmers are most responsible for control; whose income depends more on opening farms to the public; with stronger disease control attitudes; affected by outbreaks; with better knowledge and more informed; with stronger perceptions of biosecurity measures’ practicality; using a health plan; who think farmers are the main beneficiaries of control; and whose farms are dairy rather than beef. The findings might suggest that farmers may implement on-farm controls for E. coli O157 if they identify a clear hazard and if there is greater knowledge of the safety and efficacy of the proposed controls.

Orientation: The exhibition of organisation citizenship behaviour (OCB) by teachers is of great benefit for human capital development. Teachers’ perceptions of school principals as servant leaders play a critical role in their psychological empowerment and exhibition of OCBs.Research purpose: The goal of the study was to analyse the relationship between servant leadership, psychological empowerment and OCB of teachers in the South African school system.Motivation for the study: Teachers are usually under pressure to attend to the academic needs of the learners, which may be required either during normal working hours or after hours. This has necessitated the need to investigate the role played by a school principal’s servant leadership style in influencing the exhibition of OCBs.Research approach/design and method: A non-probability sample of 203 teachers drawn from selected schools in the Western Cape Province of South Africa was utilised. Item and dimensional analysis as well as structural equation modelling were performed on the data.Main findings: The constructs of servant leadership, psychological empowerment and OCB displayed high levels of internal consistency. Generally, a reasonable model fit was found for the structural and measurement models of the latent variables through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. Positive relationships were found between servant leadership, psychological empowerment and OCB.Practical/managerial implications: A principal’s servant leadership approach is likely to promote teacher empowerment and development as it enables the principal to develop teachers to their fullest potential through mentoring and coaching. The teachers are likely to respond with OCB, which benefits the learners and society at large.Contribution/value-add: Schools face the challenge of motivating teachers. One of the ways of achieving this objective is by encouraging servant leadership amongst principals. Servant leadership promotes positive outcomes and extra-role behaviours.
