Land filling of urban solid desecrate is a universal dissipate care and one of the economical technique for organizing waste in several parts of the globe. Landfill poses serious threats to the worth of the surroundings if imperfectly safe and indecently managed. The stages of different physicochemical parameters are investigated including Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), alkalinity, pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), and hardness. The mixture of physical, chemical and microbial practice in the waste shifts the contaminant from the misuse matter to the percolating water. The study asses ground water quality of samples near the dumping area and characterized. The effects are evaluated with the world health organization (WHO) and Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) index. Also attempt will be made by the aggregate index method to assess the excellence of ground water in Chidambaram and Cuddalore SIPCOT dumpsites.

The aim of this study was to assess the ground water quality of Daur Taluka of district Shaheed Benazir Abad for drinking purposes. Forty groundwater samples were collected from different locations and brought to Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) for analyzing various groundwater physical, chemical and biological parameters. The results of this study revealed that color, pH, magnesium, alkalinity and nitrate of all samples were found within the permissible limits of World Health Organization (WHO). Analytical results revealed that the percentage of samples that were beyond WHO standards was 15% regarding taste, 42.5% regarding TDS, 20% regarding chlorine, 12.5% regarding sulfate 12.5 regarding sodium and 32.5% regarding hardness. Microbiological contamination was found positive in the 25% of samples. The findings of this study revealed that the most (82.5%) of the samples of the study area belong to the category of hard to very hard water and their nature were alkaline.

Groundwater quality of Thiruvallur (district of Tamil Nadu) of coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal has been studied. Standard overlay analysis; techniques have been used for analyzing spatial data in Geographic Information System platform. For this research work, groundwater samples were collected from bore wells and open wells covering the whole study area. The collected samples were analyzed for physical, cations and anions. The thematic maps of groundwater quality parameters of the entire study area were prepared using Inverse Distance Weightage interpolation technique. Further, water quality index was computed for the region on a recommendation of standard permissible limitsrecommended by World Health Organization (WHO) 2006 for the suitability of groundwater for drinking purposes.

The present study is assess the quality of ground water from Thanjavur district, and check its fitness for drinking eight samples of ground water were collected from Thanjavur district. The pH was estimated by pH meter, calcium, magnesium, chloride were analyzed by titration method sulphade, iron, nitrate, nitrite, chromium were estimated by spectrometric method, total dissolved solids of the water samples was determined by gravimetrically, colour of the water samples was determined by platinum-cobalt method ,taste of the water samples can determine by taste rating method, turbidity of the water samples was determine by Nephelometric method etc., are determine for some parts of Thanjavur district water samples compared with standard limits recommended by BIS. Comparative study of groundwater for this region can be used for the quality of water is more suitable for drinking purpose.


One can assess the quality of water by water quality index method and it is a mathematical method to evaluate the water quality based on physical or chemical parameters, using WQI one can evaluate the water quality of both ground water and surface water, while determining the WQI one can use the standards or guidelines provided by some standard organizations like WHO (world health organization), National Standard Body of India (BIS), ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research) etc. To assign grade to the water samples under study, apart from the WQI there are some other popular techniques used to evaluate water quality they are statistical methods, multivariate statistics, neural networks, fuzzy logic and machine learning algorithms. The aim of this study is to give insight into various methods used or developed to evaluate water quality of both ground and surface water by earlier research works.

In this work, the assessment of surface and ground water quality of Palladam Taluk, Tiruppur, district, Tamil Nadu, India were carried out using Geographical Information System (GIS) and Modified National Sanitation Foundation -Water Quality Index (MNSF-WQI). Four samples from surface and twenty seven samples from ground water sources were taken from Palladam Taluk, Tiruppur District. In the current study, the surface and ground water samples were analysed for temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity (EC), biological oxygen demand (BOD), turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness (TH), faecal coliforms (FC), total phosphate (TP), total nitrate (TN), chlorides (Cl-), sodium (Na+) and fluoride (F-) ions to investigate the suitability of surface and ground water for drinking and agricultural purposes through Geographic information system (GIS) and modified national sanitation foundation water quality index (MNSF-WQI) technique. The concentrations of TH, TDS, Cl- and Na+ were observed to be above the desirable limit of World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). whereas F-, BOD, DO, EC, TP, TN, FC and temperature were within the acceptable limits. The GIS-based WQI map analysis indicated that 45% of the study area having good water quality index and the remaining area showed medium quality water. Dyeing and textile industries in the study area are responsible for deteriorating the quality to medium quality of water which was not appropriate for direct utilization and needed prior treatment. There is no detailed report on assessment of the surface and ground water quality of Palladam Taluk in Tamil Nadu using GIS and MNSF-WQI techniques.

Objectives: Suicide rates in India are among the highest in the world, resulting in an estimated 250,000 suicide deaths annually. How the media communicates with the Indian public on the topic of suicide has thus far gone without sufficient scrutiny. The objective of our study was to assess the quality of newspaper reporting of suicide-related news in India against World Health Organization suicide reporting guidelines. Methods: We used content analysis to assess the quality of suicide reporting against World Health Organization guidelines in nine of the most highly read daily newspapers in the southern state of Tamil Nadu between June and December 2016. Five of the nine newspapers under review were in the top 20 most circulated daily newspapers in the country. Results: A total of 1681 suicide articles were retrieved. The mean number of suicide articles per day per newspaper was 0.9%, and 54.5% of articles were 10 sentences or less. The vast majority (95.9%) of articles primarily focused on reporting specific suicide incidents. Harmful reporting practices were very common (e.g. a detailed suicide method was reported in 43.3% of articles), while helpful reporting practices were rare (e.g. just 2.5% gave contact details for a suicide support service). Conclusions: We observed that a daily diet of short and explicit suicide-related news was served up to readers of newspapers. Attempts should be made to understand the perspectives of media professionals in relation to suicide reporting, and to devise strategies to boost the positive contribution that media can make to suicide prevention.

This study shows the effect s of solid waste dumpsite on ground water quality in Farin-gida, Kaduna State Nigeria. Water samples were collected from six (6) different wells in three(3) strategic areas that have major dumpsites in Farin-gida. These samples were collected in November from both bore holes and hand dug wells within (0-50 meters) to the dumpsite. The following physico-chemical properties of well water was tested for, in the laboratory thus; Total Dissolve Solid, Total Alkalinity, Fluoride, PH, Turbidity and Electrical Conductivity. The results obtained as shown in table 1,2 and 3 respectively indicate that all the wells have varying levels of physico-chemical concentration that is different from the standard as recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigeria Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ), which implies that the water from the study areas are not safe for drinking. Hence, should be treated.

The problem of ground water pollution in several parts of the country has become so acute that unless urgent steps for detailed identification and abatement are taken, extensive ground water resources may be damaged. The quality of ground water depends on a large number of individual hydrological, physical, chemical and biological factors. Generally higher proportions of dissolved constituents are found in ground water than in surface water because of greater interaction of ground water with various materials in geologic strata. The work done on ground water of Satna District covering various inorganic non metallic constituents covered are pH, TS, TDS, TSS, TH, DO, BOD, COD, Alkinity, Conductivity.

An assessment of the ground water quality was carried out in Ese Odo local government area of Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria. The study was aimed at examining the various samples of ground water and the quality of the ground water as it relates to drinking and irrigation purposes. Forty-Five ground water samples were taken from boreholes and open wells and analyzed for physical, chemical and biological properties. The results were compared with World Health Organization standards. The usefulness of these parameters in predicting ground water quality characteristics were studied and water quality index was determined from these parameters. In assessing the water for irrigation uses, indices such as percent (%Na), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), permeability index (PI), Kelly’s ratio (KR), magnesium ratio (MR), equivalent salinity concentration (ESC) and Wilcox plot were used.   The result obtained shows that the water studied has a mean value of 2.8 NTU for turbidity, 7.3 for pH, 294 μS/cm for electrical conductivity, 52mg/L for total dissolved solids, temperature 28.3°C, total hardness 41 mg/L, chloride 38.3 mg/L, calcium 15.8 mg/L, 5.64 mg/L for magnesium, nitrate 1.47mg/L, sulphate 51.7 mg/L, bicarbonate 15mg/L. Zinc, iron, manganese have mean values less than 1mg/L. The results indicated all the physicochemical parameters are within the recommended levels set by World Health Organization (WHO). Although traces of heavy metal and mineral oil contaminations are observed some of the samples. All the samples are plotted on the “Excellent irrigation class” of Wilcox plot with good/excellent irrigation indices. Consequently, the groundwater in the study area is good and suitable for drinking and irrigation purposes.
