The problem of ground water pollution in several parts of the country has become so acute that unless urgent steps for detailed identification and abatement are taken, extensive ground water resources may be damaged. The quality of ground water depends on a large number of individual hydrological, physical, chemical and biological factors. Generally higher proportions of dissolved constituents are found in ground water than in surface water because of greater interaction of ground water with various materials in geologic strata. The work done on ground water of Satna District covering various inorganic non metallic constituents covered are pH, TS, TDS, TSS, TH, DO, BOD, COD, Alkinity, Conductivity.

Land filling of urban solid desecrate is a universal dissipate care and one of the economical technique for organizing waste in several parts of the globe. Landfill poses serious threats to the worth of the surroundings if imperfectly safe and indecently managed. The stages of different physicochemical parameters are investigated including Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), alkalinity, pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), and hardness. The mixture of physical, chemical and microbial practice in the waste shifts the contaminant from the misuse matter to the percolating water. The study asses ground water quality of samples near the dumping area and characterized. The effects are evaluated with the world health organization (WHO) and Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) index. Also attempt will be made by the aggregate index method to assess the excellence of ground water in Chidambaram and Cuddalore SIPCOT dumpsites.

Ground water contamination has become a serious problem due to rapid growth of population, industrialization and high rate of Urbanization. Untreated or partially treated industrial effluents discharged in to water bodies or ponds and sludge heaps causes severe ground water pollution in industrial belts. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to study the extent of ground water pollution in an area of 500 m around the Eloor-Edayar Industrial belt. Results revealed that the ground water near to the Industrial zone is already polluted and possible remedial measures are suggested.

The industrial discharge carries significant level of contaminants to the surface water and ground water. Whereas the quality of freshwater is very vital because is highly use by human for drinking, bathing, agriculture and other needs. The presence of contaminants from industries within the water may reduce the yield of crops and the growth of plants; it is also harmful to the aquatic living organisms, it alters the surface water and ground water quality. Industrial pollution is one of the major factors causing degradation of the environment, affecting the water we use, the air we breathe and the soil we live on. Hence, the pollution of water is arguably the most serious threat to current human welfare. This paper review elucidates reasons of contamination of surface water by the industrial effluents, highlights major causes of ground water pollution; the work also indicates some industrial discharges and their contaminants.

Attempt is made to understand the impact of tanneries on ground water quality of Unnao. Study was undertaken to evaluate physico-chemical parameters and chromium, lead iron concentration in ground water near tannery industries. The results revealed that only two parameters fluoride and chromium are present in slight high concentration than permissible limit. Ground water quality % sample compliance / violation with respect to BIS standard were also studied.

The quality of water is identified in terms of its physical, chemical and biological parameters.Limnological features of two such temple ponds, the Cherukulangara temple pond and Aryanambi temple pond were undertaken in the present study. The biological parameters of the ponds were also made during the study. In the present investigation all the parameters showed higher values in Pond B compared to Pond A. All values are found to be within or less than the permissible limit. Both ponds showed an oligotrophic nature with the presence of poor nutrients and low vegetation. Both ponds are unpolluted fresh water bodies which have no chemical or sewage pollution. It is suggested that the higher authorities should take steps to maintain the quality of fresh water bodies including ponds from all kinds of pollution and balance the fresh water ecosystem.
