This article reveals the role of educational and project activities in developing students’ research competencies in modern educational process at university. Students’ productive development is possible only with their comprehensive training for these types of activities. Insufficient theoretical, methodological, and practical development of this problem in Kazakhstani science determined the relevance of this article’s topic. The analysis of the study of theoretical sources and practical experience allows us to conclude that students are insufficiently prepared for educational and project activities in developing research competencies. Most students do not comprehend the importance of developing research competencies in educational and project activities, having a relatively general understanding of them. Therefore they practically lack the relevant skills and abilities. The direction of further research is developing a methodology for the development of students’ research competencies in project and research activities within pedagogical and musical disciplines in the university educational process.

The question is raised about how to involve teachers of a pedagogical University in research activities and apply the results of this activity in the educational process of the University. It is shown how involvement as the highest manifestation of human subjectivity differs from activity. Two levels of involvement are identified: the level of participation in the activity and the level of influence on its content, course and results. The author substantiates the difficulties that arise for a teacher who tries to continue studying science after defending his dissertation. This is a contradiction between a high degree of research freedom and autonomy, on the one hand, and the need for responsibility and self-organization in research search, on the other. The factors that determine involvement in research are highlighted: research “vigilance”, participation in educational innovations and studying their effects, constant feedback from the teacher with students to adjust professional tests and enhance their educational results. The author draws attention to the fact that one’s own research trajectory can be interpreted as a kind of educational trajectory of a University teacher. It is concluded that it is necessary and possible for teachers to influence the formation of a relevant scientific agenda for them and thereby enrich the educational content of professional training of future teachers.

Abstract. The aim of this paper is to use a dual, modified version of the FAO-56 methodology for the estimation of regional evapotranspiration. The proposed approach combines the FAO-56 technique with remote sensing. Two vegetation classes are considered in the evapotranspiration estimations. In the case of cereals, crop coefficients and cover fractions are estimated using relationships established with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), retrieved from SPOT-VGT data. In order to characterize the soil, a relationship is established between evaporation and the retrieved soil moisture values, based on the ERS/WSC products developed by the University of Vienna. This approach is applied to a semi-arid region in central Tunisia (North Africa) and is validated over 1991–2007 period using simulations from the ISBA-A-gs physical SVAT model. The ISBA soil moisture outputs are validated using remotely sensed ERS/WSC products. Finally, a comparison is made between the ISBA and FAO approaches, for the same studied site.

ABSTRACT Drought and heat stress can result in aflatoxin contamination of peanuts especially when this occurs during the last three to six wk of the growing season. Identifying drought-tolerant genotypes may aid in development of peanuts that are less susceptible to aflatoxin contamination. Research was conducted to phenotype seven peanut genotypes based on their response to drought stress. Six peanut genotypes that have exhibited lower aflatoxin and/or drought tolerance in previous researches (Tifguard, Tifrunner, Florida-07, PI 158839, NC 3033, C76-16) were compared to an aflatoxin-susceptible genotype, A72. The phenotyping methods included visual ratings, chlorophyll fluorescence (PIABS, ϕEO, and Fv/Fm), SPAD chlorophyll meter reading (SCMR), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), canopy temperature (CT), canopy temperature depression (CTD), and pod yield. Based on these traits, Tifguard and Tifrunner exhibited greater drought tolerance mechanisms than the other genotypes and may be good candidates to be incorporated in future drought tolerance studies. After the aflatoxin content of the different genotypes was measured, aflatoxin contamination showed high correlations with visual ratings (0.85), CTD (0.81), NDVI (0.79), and CT (0.73), and moderate correlations with Fv/Fm (0.62) and SCMR (0.57) (P ≥ 0.05). These easily measurable, rapid and cost-effective phenotyping methods may be used as alternative to more tedious and costly methods of identifying genotypes that are less susceptible to aflatoxin contamination. Using a combination of these methods is beneficial but not always practical. The combined use of visual ratings, CTD and NDVI is advised for initial evaluation of drought tolerance in peanut genotypes.
