scholarly journals Differences in the Perception of Birth Policies by the Middle aged and the Elderly in China

Because of the drastic changes in China’s birth policies, it is anticipated that the middle-aged and the elderly would view the policy of ‘one household, two children’ differently. As such, this study seeks to identify such a difference between the middle-aged and the elderly. There were 320 sets of data for the elderly generation and 305 for the middle-aged generation used for the final analysis. The study shows that, unlike the elderly generation, the middle-aged group has a negative perception towards the ‘one household, two children’ policy. Second, for the elderly generation of China, there was a significant difference in their perception towards the ‘one household, two children’ policy and ‘preferred gender of children’ depending on what the gender of the respondent’s child was. The elderly with only daughters had a rather negative perception towards the policy, and their preferred gender for children was also ‘sons’. Third, middle aged people with daughters had a more positive perception towards the policy

Background: The rib cage, such as the thoracic spine and ribs, influences glenohumeral mobility and the development of shoulder disorders. Objective: To evaluate movements of the ribs, thoracic vertebrae during bilateral arm elevation and to clarify the characteristic influences of age and gender. Methods: Subjects comprised 33 healthy individuals divided into a young group (10 males, 7 females; mean age, 25 years) and a middle-aged group (8 males, 8 females; mean age, 52 years). Chest CT was performed with two arm positions: arms hanging downwards; and arms elevated at 160°. Images were three-dimensionally reconstructed to evaluate rib movement, extension angle of thoracic vertebrae. Results: Maximal movement was observed at the fifth rib, and rib movement decreased with increasing distance from the fifth rib in both the groups. In males, movement of the second to fourth ribs was smaller in the middle-aged group than in the young group (p < 0.05). Movement of the first to ninth ribs was smaller in females than in males (p < 0.05). No significant difference in the extension angle of the thoracic vertebrae was found. Conclusion: Fifth rib movement is the largest among all ribs during bilateral arm elevation. Reduction of upper rib movement initially arises as an age-related degradation in males. Women exhibit less rib movement during bilateral arm elevation.

Studies demonstrating the uniqueness of depression in old age are numerous, but conclusions on the fact if the problems of the elderly people cause depression or if they are a part of depression are not unique. The aim of this paper is to compare the structure of depression of old people without the history of mental illness and middle-aged people treated for depression. The sample consists of 82 healthy inmates of different Homes for the Aged and 78 patients diagnosed with some sort of affective disorder. A depression has been assessed with the shorten version of the MMPI D-scale. The structure of the geriatric and clinical depression has been compared with the method of maximum likelihood, over the matrix of co-variances of answers on the items on the depression scale. The results point out to the statistically significant difference in the structure of depression of the old and clinically depressed individuals. However, half of the items of the D-scale have significant loadings on the factor of depression in both groups. The essence of the depression in both samples is made of cognitive subject matters, depressive affect, decline of motivation and a negative estimate of one's basic abilities. Symptoms concerning low self-esteem, experiencing cognitive deficit, energy and impaired physical health have been significant in describing the clinical depression, while a feeling of reduced positive stimulation and the affective liability is typical for the depression of geriatric sample. The conclusion is that, despite the differences, there is a common core of symptoms that makes the essence of depression, apart from the samples.

Body function begins to decline in middle age, with changes becoming increasingly noticeable over time. With the popularization of educational and information technology, people know more about healthcare and are becoming accustomed to self-testing using health equipment. Technological changes are reflected in products, which present innovations including the switch from traditional to touch-controlled interface designs. This can cause difficulties in the interpretation and interface operation for older adults, who may be facing physiological and psychological alterations. Understanding users’ physiological limitations has become an important aspect of product design. This study explored the effects of physiological limitations on touch-screen operation in middle-aged and elderly people, specifically regarding button type, display position, and button size. A total of 64 participants were included in the study: 32 middle-aged people (aged 45–64 years) and 32 elderly people (65 years of age and older). Each participant was asked to complete 32 tasks (two button categories × four button sizes × four presentation positions). The results revealed no differences between the elderly and the middle-aged groups with regard to the interpretation of image buttons and text buttons; however, button size affected the operation and interpretation time. Middle-aged participants demonstrated good interpretation performance when the buttons were displayed in the upper or lower part of the screen, whereas elderly participants only had a good interpretation performance when the buttons were in the upper part. For both groups, the ideal image button size was 16 mm with a text font size of 22.

Abstract Background The goal of our study is to investigate whether the methylation levels of AHCY and CBS promoters are related to the risk of cerebral infarction by detecting the methylation level of AHCY and CBS genes. Methods We extracted peripheral venous blood from 152 patients with cerebral infarction and 152 gender- and age-matched healthy controls, and determined methylation levels of AHCY and CBS promoters using quantitative methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. We used the percentage of methylation reference (PMR) to indicate gene methylation level. Results We compared the promoter methylation levels of two genes (AHCY and CBS) in peripheral blood DNA between the cerebral infarction case group and the control group. Our study showed no significant difference in AHCY promoter methylation between case and control. Subgroup analysis by gender showed that the methylation level of AHCY in males in the case group was lower than that in the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant in females. In a subgroup analysis by age, there was no significant difference in the AHCY methylation level between the case and control in the young group (≤44 years old). However, the level of AHCY gene methylation in the middle-aged group (45–59 years old) was significantly higher and the aged group (≥60 years old) was significantly lower than that in the control groups. However, CBS promoter methylation levels were significantly lower in the case group than in the control group (median PMR: 70.20% vs 104.10%, P = 3.71E-10). In addition, the CBS methylation levels of males and females in the case group were significantly lower than those in the control group (male: 64.33% vs 105%, P = 2.667E-08; female: 78.05% vs 102.8%, P = 0.003). We also found that the CBS levels in the young (23–44), middle-aged (45–59), and older (60–90) groups were significantly lower than those in the control group (young group: 69.97% vs 114.71%; P = 0.015; middle-aged group: 56.04% vs 91.71%; P = 6.744E-06; older group: 81.6% vs 119.35%; P = 2.644E-04). Our ROC curve analysis of CBS hypomethylation showed an area under the curve of 0.713, a sensitivity of 67.4%, and a specificity of 74.0%. Conclusion Our study suggests that hypomethylation of the CBS promoter may be closely related to the risk of cerebral infarction and may be used as a non-invasive diagnostic biomarker for cerebral infarction.

Abstract Background To study the correlation between blood pressure variability (BPV) and plasma renin activity (PRA), angiotensin II (AngII), aldosterone levels in patients with essential hypertension. Methods A total of 300 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension were analyzed retrospectively. The subjects were divided into 3 age groups: 100 patients aged 18–44 years (young group), 110 patients aged 45–64 years (middle-aged group), and 90 patients aged over 65 years (elderly group). PRA, AngII, and aldosterone levels were assessed. Blood pressure (BP) was measured by 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring. The relationships between BP variability and the PRA, AngII, aldosterone levels were compared among the 3 groups. Results Supine and upright PRA and aldosterone levels were significantly higher in the young group than those in the middle-aged and elderly groups. The coefficient of variation (CV) of 24-hour systolic (24hSBPCV), diastolic BP (24hDBPCV), CV of daytime systolic (dSBPCV), diastolic (dDBPCV), and nighttime systolic BP (nSBPCV) in the elderly group was higher than those in the young group and the middle-aged group (all P < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that in the young and middle-aged groups, BPV was significantly correlated with the levels of PRA, AngII, and aldosterone (all P < 0.05). In the elderly group however, only 24hDBPCV, nDBPCV, and nSBPCV were correlated with AngII and aldosterone levels (all P < 0.05). Conclusions BPV is correlated with plasma renin–angiotensin–aldosterone levels in young and middle-aged patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension.

This study was intended to investigate the effect of aerobic gymnastic training at the menstrual cycle phase and perceptions of female students of Sport Science Faculty of State University of Padang on maximum aerobic capacity. The research was conducted using repeated factorial design 2 x 3. Aerobic gymnastic training was a treatment given to the menstrual cycle phase as independent variables, perception as the attribute variable, and the maximum aerobic capacity as the dependent variable. 40 students were taken by using purposive sampling technique as the samples from 170 female students enrolled at 2010/2011 academic year. The data of menstrual cycle phase and perception were collected by using questionnaires while the data of maximum aerobic capacity were taken by using MSFT (beep test). The data of maximum aerobic capacity were then analyzed using by inferential statistics ANOVA 2 x 3 two paths .The data analysis and interpretation indicate that: (1) as the whole, there is a significant difference of the effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual, menstrual, and postmenstrual phases on the maximum aerobic capacity; (2) there is an interaction between the effects of aerobic gymnastic training during the menstrual phases and the perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (3) there is no significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual and menstrual phases of the students whose positive perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (4) there is a significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual and postmenstrual phases of the female students whose positive perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (5) there is no significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during menstrual and postmenstrual phases of the female students whose positive perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (6) there is a significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual and menstrual phases of the female students whose negative perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (7) there is no significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual and postmenstrual phases of the female students whose positive perception on maximum aerobic capacity; and (8) there is a significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during menstrual and postmenstrual phases of the female students whose negative perception on maximum aerobic capacity. The findings imply that the lowness of maximum aerobic capacity of the students during menstruation is not mainly due to the menstruation itself but more to the negative perception during on the maximum aerobic capacity. Therefore, the teachers, lecturers, and trainers are expected to provide the female students (at any levels of education) with better explanation on the menstrual cycle phases and their effects on physical activities (sports)
