scholarly journals Prediction of Ship Motions and Added Resistance in Head Waves Base on Linera Strip Theory

Prediction of ship motions and added resistance is an importance step in the ship design phases and considerable researches are related to this subject. It plays a unique role in main seakeeping characteristics such as maximum ship speed in sea waves, voluntary and involuntary speed reduction due to wave forces and added resistance as well as ship safety and ship routing, which affect transportation time, fuel consumption and total cost. The effects of environmental condition on calculation results is analyzed by performing some calculation with different wave parameter of JONSWAP spectra. The calculation results for the DTMB vessel are examined by the comparisons with experimental data carried out at Ship Design and Research Centre's towing tank in Poland, and show good agreement, which demonstrates the ability of the present method to assess seakeeping characteristics at the initial ship design phases. The calculation is performed by using the commercial software MAXSURF.

CFD tools have become the most important tools for researchers to deal with several complex problems. In this study, the viscous approach called URANS (Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) which has a fully non-linear base has been used to solve the vertical ship motions and added resistance problems in head waves. In the solution strategy, the FVM (Finite Volume Method) is used that enables numerical discretization. The ship model DTMB 5512 has been chosen for a series of computational studies at Fn=0.41 representing a high speed case. Firstly, by using CFD tools the TF (Transfer Function) graphs for the coupled heave- pitch motions in deep water have been generated and then comparisons have been made with IIHR (Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research) experimental results and ordinary strip theory outputs. In the latter step, TF graphs of added resistance for deep water have been generated by using CFD and comparisons have been made only with strip theory.

The wave-induced motions, and steady wave forces and moments for the oil tanker KVLCC2 in regular head and oblique waves are numerically predicted by using the expanded RANS solver based on OpenFOAM. New modules of wave boundary condition are programed into OpenFOAM for this purpose. In the present consideration, the steady wave forces and moments include not only the contribution of hydrodynamic effects but also the contribution of the inertial effects due to wave-induced ship motions. The computed results show that the contribution of the inertial effects due to heave and pitch in head waves is non-negligible when wave-induced motions are of large amplitude, for example, in long waves. The influence of wave amplitude on added resistance in head waves is also analyzed. The dimensionless added resistance becomes smaller with the increasing wave amplitude, indicating that added resistance is not proportional to the square of wave amplitude. However, wave amplitude seems not to affect the heave and pitch RAOs significantly. The steady wave surge force, sway force and yaw moment for the KVLCC2 with zero speed in oblique waves are computed as well. The present RANS results are compared with available experimental data, and very good agreements are found between them.

Abstract Ship's resistance and engine power to sustain ship's speed in seaways are augmented due to complex non-linear interactions between the ship and the ambient sea (waves). Ship designers, in early design stage, use an ad hoc "sea margin" to account for the effects of seaways in selecting propeller and engine. A numerical tool capable of accurately predicting added resistance and power of a ship cruising in waves would greatly help select its powering (margin) requirement and determine the optimal operating point that can maximize the energy efficiency. For seakeeping analysis, strip theory-based methods have long been used. More recently, nonlinear time-domain three-dimensional (3D) panel methods have started being used widely. A more physics-based avenue to seakeeping analysis is offered by coupled solutions of two-phase unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations and six degrees-of-freedom rigid-body motion (RBM) equations. The URANS approach also avails itself of including the effects of propulsors, either explicitly or approximately. By accounting for all the nonlinear effects in hydrodynamic forces and moments and the resulting ship motions, and the effects of fluid viscosity and turbulence, the coupled URANS-RBM method is believed not only able to predict added resistance and speed loss more accurately, but also to provide valuable insights into the physical mechanisms underlying added resistance and power. The objectives of this study are: (1) to validate a coupled URANS-RBM solver developed for high-fidelity prediction of added resistance, speed loss and added power on ships cruising in regular head sea and irregular waves, and (2) to conduct a detailed analysis of the interactions among ship hull, propeller and waves for a 1/49 scaled model of the ONR Tumblehome (ONRT) (Model 5613) in order to shed light on the physical mechanisms leading to added resistance, speed loss and added power. Figure 1 depicts the ONRT self-propellers with two 4-bladed propellers in regular waves. The main flow features such as the free surface, the hub vortices and blade-tip vortices from the propeller, as well as vortices generated by the sonar dome, shafts, shaft brackets and bilge keels are captured.

It is critical to be able to estimate a ship’s response to waves, since the added resistance and loss of speed may cause delays or course alterations, with consequent financial repercussions. Traditional methods for the study of ship motions are based on potential flow theory without viscous effects. Results of scaling model are used to predict full-scale of response to waves. Scale effect results in differences between the full-scale prediction and reality. The key objective of this study is to perform a fully nonlinear unsteady RANS simulation to predict the ship motions and added resistance of a full-scale KRISO Container Ship. The analyses are performed at design speeds in head waves, using in house computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to solve RANS equation coupled with two degrees of freedom (2DOF) solid body motion equations including heave and pitch. RANS equations are solved by finite difference method and PISO arithmetic. Computations have used structured grid with overset technology. Simulation results show that the total resistance coefficient in calm water at service speed is predicted by 4 .68% error compared to the related towing tank results. The ship motions demonstrated that the current in house CFD model predicts the heave and pitch transfer functions within a reasonable range of the EFD data, respectively.

Abstract Almost 4 years after the appearance of Salvesen–Tuck–Faltinsen (STF) strip theory (Salvesen et al., 1970, “Ship Motions and Sea Loads,” Annual Meeting of the Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineers (SNAME), New York, Nov. 12–13), Salvesen in 1974 published his popular method for calculation of added resistance (Salvesen, 1974, “Second-Order Steady State Forces and Moments on Surface Ships in Oblique Regular Waves,” Vol. 22; Salvesen, 1978, “Added Resistance of Ships in Waves,” J. Hydronautics, 12(1), pp. 24–34). His method is based on an exact near-field formulation; however, he applied the long-wave and the weak-scatterer assumptions to present his approximate method using the integrated quantities (hydrodynamic and geometrical coefficients). Considering the available computational powers in the 1970s, both of these assumptions were absolutely justifiable. The intention of this paper is to disseminate the results of a recent study at the Technical University of Denmark, whereby the Salvesen’s formulation has been revisited and the added resistance is computed from the original exact equation without invoking the weak-scatterer or the long-wave assumptions. This is performed using the solutions of the radiation and the scattering problems, obtained by a low-order boundary element method and the two-dimensional free-surface Green function inside our in-house STF theory implementation (Bingham and Amini-Afshar, 2020, DTU_Strip Theory Solver). The weak-scatterer assumption is then removed through a direct calculation of the x-derivatives of the velocity potentials and the normal vectors along the body. Knowing the velocity potentials over each panel, the long-wave assumption is also avoided by a piece-wise analytical integration of sectional Kochin Function (Kochin, 1936, “On the Wave Resistance and Lift of Bodies Submerged in Fluid,” Transactions of the Conference on the Theory of Wave Resistance, Moscow.). The presented results for five ship geometries testify that the correct treatment of the original equation is achieved only after both of the above-mentioned assumptions are removed. Implemented in this manner, Salvesen’s method proves to be relatively more accurate and robust than has been generally perceived during all these years.

The dynamic behaviour of a fishing vessel in waves is studied in order to reveal its parametric rolling characteristics. This paper presents experimental and numerical results in longitudinal regular waves. The experimental results are compared against the results of a time-domain non-linear strip theory model of ship motions in six degrees-of-freedom. These results contribute to the validation of the parametric rolling prediction method, so that it can be used as an assessment tool to evaluate both the susceptibility and severity of occurrence of parametric rolling at the early design stage of these types of vessels.

The main transport channel of the global economy is represented by shipping. Engineers and hull designers are more preoccupied in ensuring fleet safety, the proper operation of the ships, and, more recently, compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulatory incentives. Considerable efforts have been devoted to in-depth understanding of the hydrodynamics mechanism and prediction of ship behavior in waves. Prediction of seakeeping performances with a certain degree of accuracy is a demanding task for naval architects and researchers. In this paper, a fully numerical approach of the seakeeping performance of a KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, Daejeon, South Korea) container ship (KCS) container vessel is presented. Several hydrodynamic methods have been employed in order to obtain accurate results of ship hydrodynamic response in regular waves. First, an in-house code DYN (Dynamic Ship Analysis, “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati, Romania), based on linear strip theory (ST) was used. Then, a 3D fully nonlinear time-domain Boundary Element Method (BEM) was implemented, using the commercial code SHIPFLOW (FLOWTECH International AB, Gothenburg, Sweden). Finally, the commercial software NUMECA (NUMECA International, Brussels, Belgium) was used in order to solve the incompressible unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation (RANSE) flow at ship motions in head waves. The results obtained using these methods are represented and discussed, in order to establish a methodology for estimating the ship response in regular waves with accurate results and the sensitivity of hydrodynamical models.
