Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic role of mean platelet volume (MPV) for acute appendicitis. Methods: Patient files were retrospectively observed. MPV of 311 patients with pathological diagnosis of acute appendicitis were compared with the MPV of 314 healthy children (blood samples were taken for elective operations). SPSS (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) was used to evaluate the results. Results: 188 of acute appendicitis were male (%60.5). Mean age of acute appendicitis group was 10.22±3.83. MPV of children with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis (8.37±0.83fL) and the control group (10.55±0.83fL). MPV values were statistically different between the acute appendicitis and control group (p<0,001). Conclusion: MPV may be used as a marker for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis, but it is not a specific biomarker for appendicitis.

Acute appendicitis always need surgical treatment. If appendectomy is not performed immediately, perforation of appendix and peritoneal contamination will complicate the disease. The highest incidence of appendicitis is in late teen, with 5% incidence in children under 5 years old. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between onset of abdominal pain with the severity of pediatric acute appendicitis and to know the different of average leukocyte count of pediatric acute appendicitis between appendicitis and appendicitis complication. This study was analytical comparative and analytical correlative with retrospective approach. About 68 medical records of pediatric acute appendicitis patient in Arifin Achmad General Hospital Riau Province period January 2018 – December 2019 were analyzed. The result showed appendicitis case in children was same affected girls and boys mostly in group age 6-12 years old. Onset of abdominal pain was mostly after 48 hours of the disease. About 69.1% patient was suffering of appendicitis complication. Leukocytosis was found in 76.5% patients. Statistics analysis using unpaired t test showed p=0.00, it meant a significant different of average leukocyte count between appendicitis and appendicitis complication. IC95%=4015.7-6683.1.  Statistics analysis using Somers’d correlative test show p=0.00. From this study, it can be concluded that there was a significant different of average leukocyte count between appendicitis and appendicitis complication also there was a significant correlation between onset of abdominal pain with severity of pediatric acute appendicitis with strong power correlation.

In this research the analyzed data were obtained from the Department of Social Medicine of the Center for Public Health at PHI General Hospital - Strumica for patients with acute appendicitis from Strumica and from the department for Statistics of the Center for Public Health at PHI General Hospital - Gevgelija for patients with acute appendicitis from Gevgelija. 361 people diagnosed with acute appendicitis were analyzed in the period from 2015 to 2020. According to the results most of the patients were hospitalized in 2015 (20.2%) and 2016 (20.2%). The majority of respondents are aged 0-24 years (67.5%), while males have a higher risk of developing this disease (55, 9%). in 2017 the number was 40 (14.9%), in 2018, 43 (16%), and in 2019 the number of hospitalized with acute appendicitis was 40 (14.9%), equal to that in 2017. The average age at hospitalization is 23.4 years, 22.8 years for men and 24 years for women. In the number of hospitalized people belonging to the first three age groups from 0 - 24 years, 25-44 years and 45-54 years (0-54), there is a higher prevalence of male (57.4%) compared to female patients (42.6%), while the number of hospitalized patients belonging to the age groups of 55-64, 65-74 and over 74 years there is a higher representation of female (58.3%) compared to male patients (41.7%). The average morbidity rate per 10,000 inhabitants in the Southeast region is 4.1, with an average rate of 3.5 in Gevgelija and an average rate of 4.8 in Strumica per 10,000 citizens. The incidence of acute appendicitis is highest in children, adolescents and young adults, and continuously decreases with age.

Background<br />Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Indonesian women. A combination of paclitaxel and carboplatin is used to treat EOC as standard chemotherapy which is known to have hematologic toxicities. This study aimed to investigate the effect of combined paclitaxel-carboplatin chemotherapy on hematologic status in EOC patients managed at Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung, West Java.<br /><br />Methods<br />All patients with confirmed pathological diagnosis of EOC at Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital in the period of 2013 to 2014 were registered. Only patients with complete hematologic data before and after chemotherapy were collected and compared using the paired non-parametric Wilcoxon and McNemar tests. <br /><br />Results<br />In total there were 147 patients with EOC (median age 46 ± 12 years), with the most dominant pathological diagnosis of mucinous (32.7%) and serous (29.3%) types. Only 33 patients had hematologic data before the initiation of chemotherapy. There was a significant decrease after chemotherapy including hemoglobin level (12.0 vs 10.9 g/dL, p=0.013), erythrocyte count (4.53 vs 3.74 million/mL, p&lt;0.001), leukocyte count (7,700 vs 4,000/mm3 p&lt;0.001) and platelet count (343,000 vs 215,000/mm3, p&lt;0.001). Interestingly, anemia cases after chemotherapy were predominant (87.9%) compared with erythopenia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia i.e. 39.4%, 57.6%, and 27.3% respectively. <br /><br />Conclusions<br />This study confirmed the hematologic toxicities after paclitaxel-carboplatin chemotherapy in EOC patients treated in Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, West Java. The hemoglobin concentration may serve as prognostic factor. Further studies directed to other factors such as genetic factor for polymorphisms may be encouraged to explore the decrease of the hematologic indices.

Acute appendicitis is one of the most abdominal acute causes that occurs in younger individuals but can also occur in any age range. Children are the most affected age by acute appendicitis. The age that most vulnerable to acute appendicitis is 10-20 years of age (Tian Y et all, 2015). In appendicitis, the severity of inflammation occurring in the appendix determines the severity of symptoms that occur in an individual who experiences it (Zarandiet all, 2014). One of the ways used to establish diagnosis of appendicitis is with PED (Pediatric Appendicitis Score). In a study by Thomas Rettenbacher, the outer diameter of the appendix ≥ 6 mm obtained on ultrasound examination may also indicate an acute appendicitis state with 100% sensitivity and a specificity of 60%. So in this study we analyzed the correlation relationship between the PAS score with the outer diameter of the appendix in the case of appendicitis.
