There is a chronic underrepresentation of Māori and Pacific academics in our university sector in Aotearoa New Zealand. Sitting behind the disparity are a range of practices that support some groups in Aotearoa New Zealand to succeed and move more freely through higher education institutions than others. In response to scholarship highlighting this issue, a collective of students and staff at Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington came together to organise an action-oriented workshop to draw attention to ways that universities are governed through power relations. Attention was also paid to mitigating power imbalances in the organisation, format, and delivery of the event, and between attendees, presenters, and event facilitators from dominant and non-dominant ethnic and cultural groups. This reflection piece is not so much a recounting of the event itself but rather an opportunity to share with the wider academic world ways in which the collective attempted to hold our university accountable for failing in their responsibilities to the people on whose ancestral lands they exist.

Democratising methodologies often require research partnerships in practice. Research partnerships between indigenous and non-indigenous partners are commonplace, but there is unsatisfactory guidance available to non-indigene researchers about how to approach the relationship in a way that builds solidarity with the aims of the indigenous community. Worse still, non-indigenous researchers may circumvent indigenous communities to avoid causing offense, in effect silencing those voices. In this article, we argue that the ethics of care provides a framework that can guide ethical research practice, because it attends to the political positioning of the people involved, acknowledges inequalities and aims to address these in solidarity with the community. Drawing on our research partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand, we explain how the ethics of care intertwines with Māori values, creating a synergistic and dialogic approach.

Abstract. Māori oral histories from the northern South Island of Aotearoa-New Zealand provide details of ancestral experience with tsunami(s) on, and surrounding, Rangitoto (D'Urville Island). Applying an inductive-based methodology informed by collaborative storytelling, exchanges with key informants from the Māori kin groups of Ngāti Koata and Ngāti Kuia reveal that a folk tale, published in 1907, could be compared to and combined with active oral histories to provide insights into past catastrophic saltwater inundations. Such histories reference multiple layers of experience and meaning, from memorials to ancestral figures and their accomplishments to claims about place, authority and knowledge. Members of Ngāti Koata and Ngāti Kuia, who permitted us to record some of their histories, share the view that there are multiple benefits to be gained by learning from differences in knowledge, practice and belief. This work adds to scientific as well as Maōri understandings about tsunami hazards (and histories). It also demonstrates that to engage with Māori oral histories (and the people who genealogically link to such stories) requires close attention to a politics of representation, in both past recordings and current ways of retelling, as well as sensitivities to the production of new and plural knowledges. This paper makes these narratives available to a new audience, including those families who no longer have access to them, and recites these in ways that might encourage plural knowledge development and co-existence.

Though short, Aotearoa/New Zealand’s history is rich and holds an abundance of knowledge preserved in the form of songs, beliefs, practices, and narratives that inform this country’s unique place in the world as well as the identity of its people. This paper observes that with migratory history and a heritage of colonization, the people of Aotearoa/New Zealand express three identities: indigenous, colonial and migrant, all with a claim to appropriate representation in the country’s built fabric. It discusses the current state of knowledge by looking at the history and architectural tradition manifested in Auckland, the largest and fastest-growing city in Aotearoa. It adds that further research is required to understand and develop an appropriate methodology to address Auckland’s growing multiculturalism, which lacks adequate expression.

<p>Human infants share common biological and developmental needs in the postnatal period that are optimally met during intimate contact with their mother or primary caregiver. In the case of infants hospitalised in tertiary-level neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), there is a departure from instinctual caregiving and nurturing found in the mother-infant pair, due in part, to a model of care which supports maternal-infant separation. This can lead to suboptimal physiological responses, altered neurobiology and life-long negative health effects. The social construction of neonatal care currently positions it within the paradigm of biomedical science. Where family-centred, developmental care frameworks have been integrated, and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) has been embedded into caregiving routines, enhanced patient, whānau/family, staff and organisational outcomes have been found.   This study is underpinned by the importance of KMC for the enhancement of infant and whānau/families’ health and developmental outcomes. Despite its classification as an evidence-based practice, and recommendations by the World Health Organisation for its use in all healthcare settings, KMC is inconsistently applied. The highly complex and contextual nature of the environments where medically-dependent babies are cared for is acknowledged. There is a need for health services to explore innovative research approaches, through a social science lens, to assist in the implementation of KMC. This thesis illustrates one such approach.  The purpose of this study was to explore and activate improvement of the KMC programme within one NICU in Aotearoa New Zealand using Participatory Action Research (PAR). The research was theoretically informed by Als’ developmental biology and care theories, D’Agata’s Infant Medical Trauma model, and the Foucauldian concept of power/knowledge through a critical feminist lens. A participatory approach was chosen in the hope that transformation of KMC practice would be achieved and embedded within this NICU. In addition, I intended to contribute to the emerging body of evidence calling for the collaboration of all community members toward enhanced quality of KMC. Multiple methods were used to capture data relating to the NICU’s KMC programme through audit, observation and interview of key stakeholders.  Project planning included the conventions of PAR generally applied to research using this methodology. Three iterative cycles of exploration, implementation and evaluation of the KMC programme were envisaged within this setting. Active participation with multiple NICU stakeholders was planned for, forming the basis of action-based change and improvement of KMC. However, the three-cycle process was not achieved within the time limitations of my research, with field work finishing at the conclusion of the first exploratory cycle. This thesis describes the unfolding processes of PAR, as well as the inclusion of a secondary discourse analysis and parental perspectives from local and global literature.  Key findings showed inconsistently documented KMC and the near-absence of KMC practice for a significant group of babies. Whilst the benefit of KMC was embedded in the understanding of participants, this knowledge did not translate to practice. There was an unrealistic optimism about the functioning of KMC by most of the stakeholders. In addition, participants expressed ambiguity about their programme, contributing to and influenced by suboptimal KMC education and training. A pathway to improvement of their KMC programme was lacking, and the lines of responsibility for it were unclear. This factor undoubtedly contributed to the difficulties of implementing a full PAR project. Whilst parental, staff and organisational factors were found to influence KMC implementation, arguably the greatest effect on the intervention were the power relations inherent within the normative technocratic, biomedical paradigm. Power relations constituting what was considered authoritative knowledge, and who was authorised to speak, impacted on the participatory nature of the research itself. This resulted in the research not proceeding past the first PAR exploratory cycle through to rounds of implementation and evaluation.  This thesis describes participatory inquiry into one KMC programme in the high-income NICU setting, through the lenses of multiple participants within the context of Aotearoa New Zealand. These were not previously known. It also provides an example of how Foucauldian- and feminist-informed PAR methodology may be used within the NICU setting for inquiry into KMC, an intervention positioned outside of the normative biomedical framework.</p>

The Social workers need to call on a broad range of sources of bodies of knowledge and respond to the complexity and its chaotic nature of situations arising in social work profession. There appears to be dire need to consider the use of (a) the theoretical knowledge into practice by being more caring and supportive with the aim of (b) disentangling the various elements of a complex system and enhancing the resilience both of the people involved and the social and organizational systems that they are inter-twined with people lives. The current acknowledgement of the bi-cultural framework by the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW) is no doubt a positive move towards infusing indigenous practice frame work into dealing with the chaotic nature and complexity of the social work profession in New Zealand but still remains to be seen in actual social work practice .The purpose of this chapter is to attempt to explore the potential of infusing Indigenous bodies of knowledge into practice against the background of the complexity nature of the social work profession in a developed world like New Zealand.

<p>My thesis examines the reflexive processing of knowledge, beliefs, values and personal priorities in the internal and external conversations of students during a period of university study. In higher education, learners encounter the values and views of knowledge prioritised by political, institutional, departmental and academic discourses; beliefs, values and dispositions which may differ from their own. Currently there is little understanding of how university students examine and act on new understandings of knowledge in light of their existing reference points and priorities. I use structure-agency and reflexivity theory as lenses to understand individuals’ agentic responses to the personal, social and structural enablements and constraints encountered in their university studies and daily lives.  Using reflexivity methods drawn from Margaret Archer’s work, I investigated students’ responses to citizenship concepts presented in three compulsory courses at one Aotearoa/New Zealand university. My research involved a unique application of framework analysis methods to draw themes from the 31 participants’ stories while retaining the integrity of each narrative.  In a new application of Archer’s work, I found that some participants demonstrated controlled reflexivity in containing their reflexive thought processes in response to situational changes such as family trauma or mental health. Controlled reflexivity ensured the actor balanced their concerns against their projects and goals to manage and contain both their internal and external deliberations. This research challenges Archer’s idea that the disruptions of late modernity removed people from their natal contexts, increasing their need for higher levels of reflexivity. While reflexivity shifts when students’ values and concerns are challenged, I found that technological developments have allowed individuals to retain more and deeper connections with their natal context than in Archer’s work. Furthermore, I argue that Archer’s claim of a reflexive progression in dominant modes due to increased education is too simplistic and fails to acknowledge that students’ reflexive practices are highly contextual (such as living in a bicultural country like Aotearoa/New Zealand) and strongly influenced by personal circumstances. Internal conversations for my research participants were complemented with external conversations to build reflexivity. Single, dual or multi modes of reflexivity were revealed in study-work life as students’ personal priorities shifted. The specificity of reflexive processing means reflexivity typologies need to be robust to be applied across cultures and contexts.  This work is a reminder to policy developers, universities, teachers and employers that the “invisible” personal characteristics and attributes that society seeks to see in new graduates are neither easy to assess nor to confirm using typologies. Academics need to remain open to understanding the multiple intersections of the study world with individuals’ wider social worlds and circumstances.</p>
