The analysis of the existing method of evaluating the gear transmission resource by the criterion of painting is carried out. The stresses resulting from the operation of an involute gear train are considered. Disadvantages of the existing method of calculating the transmission resource are identified. Proposals for improving this calculation are formulated.

SummaryNishihara’s combined bending and torsion out-of-phase fatigue limit data are analysed. The Tresca shear stress failure criterion predicts strengths up to 30 per cent higher than observed. It thus appears that renewed attention should be given to the basic problem of developing reliable combined stress failure criteria. It is suggested that new test methods will be required for this purpose.

The dynamic performance of asymmetric involute gear transmission system is analyzed by the MSC.ADAMS software during the paper. By comparative analyzed with the traditional dynamic characteristics of symmetrical involute straight gear transmission, it can be summarized that the asymmetric involute gear transmission system has better vibration characteristics in the course of transmission.

The planetary gear transmission with double moduli and pressure angles gearing is proposed for meeting the low weight high reliability requires. A dynamic differential equation of the NGW planetary gear train system with double and pressure angles is established. The 4-Order Runge-Kutta numerical integration method is used to solve the equations from which the result of the dynamic response is got. The dynamic load coefficients are formulated and are compared with those of the normal gear train. The double modulus planetary gear transmission is designed and manufactured. The experiment of operating and vibration are carried out and provides.

Epicyclic gear train is a fundamental form of mechanical transmission with broad applications. Efficiency study of these trains is critical to design, optimization, and operation. It is known that the efficiencies of these systems are highly related to the internal power flows. We apply the concept of virtual power to find analytical expression of the efficiency of a two degrees of freedom train, with associated applicable ranges. The results are verified by an example.

Three-dimensional fatigue failure criteria for unidirectional fiber composites under states of cyclic stress are established in terms of quadratic stress polynomials which are expressed in terms of the transversely isotropic invariants of the cyclic stress. Two distinct fatigue failure modes, fiber mode, and matrix mode, are modeled separately. Material information needed for the failure criteria are the S-N curves for single stress components. A preliminary approach to incorporate scatter into the failure criteria is presented.
