Fenomena Arab Spring dalam Wacana Qatar Debate

<p><strong>This article aims to describe the Arab Spring phenomenon through critical discourse analysis of the Qatar Debate. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with the note-taking method. The results of the study show that the structure of the discourse contained in the Qatar debate consists of several structures. First, the macrostructure that contains thematic elements or general themes, namely about ‘Arab Spring has failed’. Second, is the superstructure which contains schematic elements referring to the system and the rules of the game in the turn of speech. Third, the microstructure contains elements of semantics, syntax, stylistics, rhetoric, and metaphors. The semantic element of the Qatar debate shows the uses of language that aims to rever to connotative meanings. Syntactically, the Qatari debaters are dominant using active sentence patterns and noun sentences (jumlah ismiyah). From the stylistic aspect, both teams have their own style of language, as the pro team uses a lot of declarative styles while the counter team tends to use an interrogative style. The rhetorical and metaphorical elements are used a few times but not in large portions. This study also shows the different views of the two teams from two countries that represent the social views of the people in their respective countries towards the Arab Spring phenomenon.</strong></p><p><strong><em>Keywords</em></strong> – <em>Arab Spring, Critical Discourse Analyst, Qatar Debate</em></p>

<p><em>Media bias will always be an interesting topic to be examined. Media plays some important roles in society. One of its roles is building public opinions. In this case, media has been assumed to be biased as it might take some advantages from its position. This study aims at investigating The Jakarta Post’s bias towards the environmental preservation issues (an ecolinguistic study). The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive method by applying Van Dijk’s model of critical discourse analysis. This research model does not only analyze the aspect of text structure but also social cognition and social context. The object for this study is the news texts taken from The Jakarta Post Online. The result of the study showed that The Jakarta Post showed its bias towards environmental preservation issues by positioning itself as a pro’s side . In the text structure level, its bias can be identified with the way it chose the theme, topics, schemes and lexical choices which were in accordance with environmental ethics principles. In the social cognition level, its bias can be identified with the nature of the knowledge involved in showing its position in accordance with environmental preservation mission. In the social context level, its bias can be identified with the social values reflected from the news and certain group domination involved in the Jakarta Post’s news report which was in accordance with pro-environmental preservation. Generally, The Jakarta Post showed its progressive attitude or tendency to the change by intensely discussing environmental issues which implied the ideas of improving the way people should preserve their environment.</em></p><p> </p><p><em>Keberpihakan media akan selalu menjadi bahan yang menarik untuk diteliti. Media memainkan peran penting dalam masyarakat. Salah satu peran media adalah membangun opini publik. Dalam hal ini, media telah diasumsikan memiliki keberpihakan karena media dapat mengambil keuntungan dari posisinya tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat keberpihakan The Jakarta Post terhadap isu pelestarian lingkungan hidup (sebuah kajian ekolinguistik). Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan analisis wacana kritis model Van Dijk. Model penelitian ini tidak hanya menganalisis aspek struktur teks, melainkan juga kognisi sosial dan konteks sosial. Objek penelitian ini adalah teks berita yang diambil dari media berita online The Jakarta Post. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa The Jakarta Post menunjukkan keberpihakannya terhadap isu pelestarian lingkungan hidup dengan meposisikan dirinya sebagai pihak yang mendukung. Dalam tataran struktur teks, keberpihakannya dapat diidentifikasi dari tema, topik, skema wacana dan pilihan kata yang digunakan yang sesuai dengan prinsip-prinsip etika lingkungan. Dalam tataran kognisi sosial, keberpihakannya dapat diidentifikasi dari sifat pengetahuan yang dilibatkan yang menunjukkan posisinya yang sejalan dengan misi pelestarian lingkungan hidup. Dalam tataran konteks sosial, keberpihakannya dapat diidentifikasi dari nilai-nilai sosial yang tercermin dari berita dan dominasi kelompok yang dilibatkan dalam pelaporan berita yang ditulis The Jakarta Post yang berada pada posisi pro-pelestarian lingkungan hidup. Secara umum, The Jakarta Post menunjukkan sikap progresif atau cenderung kepada perubahan dengan mengulas secara intens isu-isu pelestarian lingkungan hidup yang secara tersirat menyarankan perlu adanya peningkatan terhadap upaya-upaya pelestarian lingkungan hidup.</em><em></em></p>

Linguistically, the word ‘language’ has shifted into ‘discourse’ which is a social phenomenon not only to express the thoughts but also to reflect the mindset and contexts of a specific community. The purpose of this study is to examine the slogans written on Pakistani automobiles and to understand the logic behind the social and cultural affiliations of these slogans. Pakistani culture of the art of making pictures and written phrases, poetic verses and imperative sentences on vehicles is famous all over the world. The study has analysed the writings found on vehicles, and although these writings might look trivial on the automobiles, they address various social issues. The Three-Dimensional Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough (2001) is used as a theoretical framework that explains the study at three levels: lexical, syntactic patterns, interpretations, and social practices. The discourses written on the vehicles are characterised into different categories, which are life’s mission statements, loud messages, mind baffling messages, everyday life annoyances, provoking statements, and religious looms. Twenty images and pictures have been captured from vehicles as a random sample of this study. The results reveal the mindset behind these discourses. They are used to highlight social issues which Pakistan faces, being a developing country. In short, the study discloses the strong link between the vehicles and the people using them to convey messages to the society which can bring harmony among the public. The current study is limited to only Pakistani motor vehicles.

Wikileaks did not reveal much we did not know about U.S. foreign policy already. e true revelations were – as many had suspected – that some foreign leaders pursue a di erent foreign policy agenda than the of- cial one. Sources providing information to foreign diplomats will be more prudent from now on. e main impact is a new type of diplomacy bypassing leaders to communicate directly with the people – increasing people’s power and highlighting the growing importance of civic society and the social media. e ability to intensively monitor social media also brings a markedly better understanding of the domestic context of foreign countries. Events surrounding the Arab spring bears testament to this.

This study examines identity issues in and among the Mandailing people, adapting Bhabha's argument that there is no stable identity, but that identity changes with every interaction in society. For this examination of identity, Bhabha's concept of hybridity has been adapted to investigate the mixture of identities among the Mandailing people.The hybridization in Mandailing is caused by several factors including: cultural contacts, Islamization, migration, and colonialism. The author uses a postcolonial review to see the process of hybrid formation in Mandailing through literary text written by a Mandailing writer, named Willem Iskander, entitled Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk. The text consists of several poems and prose representing the identity of the Mandailing people in the colonial era. In order to realize the postcolonial, the author chooses a critical discourse analysis method for analyzing the data in the text. This critical analysis is able to unravel the colonial discourses that are metaphorically in the text. By combining with the postcolonial theory, especially proposed by Bhabha, this research results a finding, hybridization giving rise to the ambivalence of the Mandailing people. This ambivalence manifests in the social, cultural and political life of the people.

The emergence of pornography cases that had gone viral on social media with the tagline "V Garut" shocked the public because the act was committed by a woman and several men. The female suspect claimed that this act was done because of coercion and pressure that the male suspect had put on her. The research aims to explain the level of text, social cognition and social context of the pornography news of "V Garut" on the online media of TribunJabar.id. The research used a qualitative descriptive method with the theoretical approach of critical discourse analysis by Teun A. Van Dijk. Data collection techniques used observation, interviews, and documentation. The research object was related to the news of "V Garut" on the online media TribunJabar.id with two informants. The results of research at the text level in the elements of macrostructures, superstructures and microstructures explain the existence of a discourse indicating an unfavourable situation such as violence and marginalization on the role of "V Garut". Journalists’ social cognition tends to judge this case as “unique” phenomenon, not focusing on a social issue that must be addressed in society. Based on the analysis of the social context of this news, it can be seen that there is a powerful practice of the media and the authority’s access in reporting the “V Garut” case. Joko Widodo as the elected president delivered his political speech following the judgement of The Constitutional Court of Indonesia regarding the lawsuit of the election of the president and vice president of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2019-2024 period. In the judgement, the Constitutional Court of Indonesia affirmed to reject the lawsuit and decided Joko Widodo and Ma’ruf Amin as the elected President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia. Thus, such political speech cannot be considered as independent. In his speech, Joko Widodo conveyed statement and ideology through language. Therefore, Joko Widodo’s speech was analyzed using the Huckin model for critical discourse analysis approach which was carried out using qualitative descriptive methods. The data source was Joko Widodo’s speech after the judgement of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia broadcasted nationwide. The analysis was carried out to look for genre, framing, foregrounding or backgrounding, presuppositions, and differences in topics, as well as analysis of sentences and words. The result shows that Joko Widodo used straightforward and explicit language and was presented in an argumentative and persuasive manner. The delivering of the speech used the language relations and power so that the ideology conveyed and was accepted by the people of Indonesia.AbstrakJoko Widodo sebagai presiden terpilih menyampaikan pidato politiknya usaiMahkamah Konstitusi memutuskan gugatan perkara hasil pemilihan presiden dan wakil presiden Republik Indonesia periode 2019--2024. Dalam putusan itu, Mahkamah Konstitusi menegaskan menolak gugatan yang diajukan oleh Tim Pemenangan Prabowo Subianto dan Sandiaga S. Uno dan memutuskan Joko Widodo dan Ma’ruf Amin sebagai Presiden dan Wakil Presiden Republik Indonesia terpilih. Berkenaan dengan itu, pidato politik itu tidak dapat dipandang berdiri sendiri. Joko Widodo dalam pidatonya menyampaikan pernyataan dan ideologi melalui bahasa. Oleh karena itu, pidato Joko Widodo dianalisis dengan pendekatan analisiswacana kritis model Huckin. Analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Sumber data dalam penelitian adalah pidato Joko Widodo usai putusan Mahkamah Konstitusi yang disiarkan secara nasional oleh media massa. Analisis dilakukan untuk melihat genre, framing, foregrounding atau backgrounding, praanggapan, dan perbedaan topik, serta analisis kalimat dan kata. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa Joko Widodo menggunakan bahasa lugas dan eksplisit dan disampaikan secara argumentatif dan persuasif. Penyampaian itu menggunakan relasi bahasa dan kekuasaan sehingga ideologi yang disampaikan dapat diterima secara positif oleh rakyat Indonesia.

Research that analyses critically on claims and additional information on a skincare product is a research that bring the novelty in critical discourse analysis, because the previous study focused on the advertisement or the packaging. Although most skincare products apply this method (using claims and additional information), researchers focus on one of the branded skincare products; Pond’s. The main reason is; this product is already widely known and used by the people in Indonesia. Trough critical discourse analysis model from van Dijk, the researchers discuss three dimensions (text, social cognition and social context) in claims and additional information in some products from Pond’s. There are seven Pond’s products as the data in this study. Besides, researchers used additional data in the form of a survey to five skincare products users. The results of the analysis are; (1) on the text dimension, the general aim is to attract the consumers to choose Pond’s as their skincare products. (2) In social cognition, company show marketing techniques that try to obscure the facts in additional information by using small and separated text. (3) In the social context, the influence of consumers who are easily attracted to a product because of the interesting slogan text makes Pond’s use the hyperbole language
