This study examines identity issues in and among the Mandailing people, adapting Bhabha's argument that there is no stable identity, but that identity changes with every interaction in society. For this examination of identity, Bhabha's concept of hybridity has been adapted to investigate the mixture of identities among the Mandailing people. The hybridization in Mandailing is caused by several factors including: cultural contacts, Islamization, migration, and colonialism. The author uses a postcolonial review to see the process of hybrid formation in Mandailing through literary text written by a Mandailing writer, named Willem Iskander, entitled Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk. The text consists of several poems and prose representing the identity of the Mandailing people in the colonial era. In order to realize the postcolonial, the author chooses a critical discourse analysis method for analyzing the data in the text. This critical analysis is able to unravel the colonial discourses that are metaphorically in the text. By combining with the postcolonial theory, especially proposed by Bhabha, this research results a finding, hybridization giving rise to the ambivalence of the Mandailing people. This ambivalence manifests in the social, cultural and political life of the people.

<p><strong>This article aims to describe the Arab Spring phenomenon through critical discourse analysis of the Qatar Debate. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with the note-taking method. The results of the study show that the structure of the discourse contained in the Qatar debate consists of several structures. First, the macrostructure that contains thematic elements or general themes, namely about ‘Arab Spring has failed’. Second, is the superstructure which contains schematic elements referring to the system and the rules of the game in the turn of speech. Third, the microstructure contains elements of semantics, syntax, stylistics, rhetoric, and metaphors. The semantic element of the Qatar debate shows the uses of language that aims to rever to connotative meanings. Syntactically, the Qatari debaters are dominant using active sentence patterns and noun sentences (jumlah ismiyah). From the stylistic aspect, both teams have their own style of language, as the pro team uses a lot of declarative styles while the counter team tends to use an interrogative style. The rhetorical and metaphorical elements are used a few times but not in large portions. This study also shows the different views of the two teams from two countries that represent the social views of the people in their respective countries towards the Arab Spring phenomenon.</strong></p><p><strong><em>Keywords</em></strong> – <em>Arab Spring, Critical Discourse Analyst, Qatar Debate</em></p>

Linguistically, the word ‘language’ has shifted into ‘discourse’ which is a social phenomenon not only to express the thoughts but also to reflect the mindset and contexts of a specific community. The purpose of this study is to examine the slogans written on Pakistani automobiles and to understand the logic behind the social and cultural affiliations of these slogans. Pakistani culture of the art of making pictures and written phrases, poetic verses and imperative sentences on vehicles is famous all over the world. The study has analysed the writings found on vehicles, and although these writings might look trivial on the automobiles, they address various social issues. The Three-Dimensional Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough (2001) is used as a theoretical framework that explains the study at three levels: lexical, syntactic patterns, interpretations, and social practices. The discourses written on the vehicles are characterised into different categories, which are life’s mission statements, loud messages, mind baffling messages, everyday life annoyances, provoking statements, and religious looms. Twenty images and pictures have been captured from vehicles as a random sample of this study. The results reveal the mindset behind these discourses. They are used to highlight social issues which Pakistan faces, being a developing country. In short, the study discloses the strong link between the vehicles and the people using them to convey messages to the society which can bring harmony among the public. The current study is limited to only Pakistani motor vehicles.

Viral events on social media are often made into the news. One of the social media viral events that made the news in mid-2019 was #JusticeforAudrey. Allegations of violence against Audrey made headlines in all mass media, including on Liputan 6 Siang SCTV. During April 2019, projections related to Audrey's coverage were submitted by producers every day. The news values that is the basis for determining the feasibility of an event to become news is no longer the priority of producers. This research paradigm is critical with a qualitative approach and uses the Fairclough Critical Discourse Analysis method. Theory of Political Economy Vincent Mosco explains the practice of viral news values is the practice of commodification of content and audiences. Viral social media events are considered attractive to internet users and expected to attract tv viewers. The practice of viral social media news is the commodification of content. Meanwhile, in the commodification of audiences, television news viewers in the form of rating & share are used as sales to advertisers, which in turn become an economic advantage for media corporations.

The phenomenal discourse on People Power after Pemilu 2019 is an opinion that was initiated by a central figure in Indonesia, namely Amien Rais. This discourse invited many responses, one of which was Yusril Ihza Mahendra. Yusril gave his argument about various complicated situations and the risk of governance under the umbrella of provocation of people power. The problem of this research is how is the structure of the text and the social context that builds Yusril's opinion on the discourse of people power? This research includes descriptive qualitative research. The approach used is the critical discourse analysis model Teun A. Van Dijk. The data analysis method used is the equivalent and contextual method. Data presentation is done informally. Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that: (1) the structure of the text describes semantic, syntactic, and stylistic aspects; while (2) the social context that builds the discourse of People Power is the power and access that the author has.

The purpose of this paper is to understand the concept of accounting sustainability of spiritual dimension as a concept of sustainability. Sustainability accounting of spiritual dimension or can be called as Aksus is a sustainable concept which contains the spiritual dimension that complements the previous three dimensions (profit, people, and planet). This study uses the critical discourse analysis method of Norman Fairclough. The result is that there is a representation of Sukoharsono's thoughts in the text, as well as the relation to Sukoharsono's reader and identity for the readers that occur on the look of a text. Thought of concern for the survival of all beings is present in the text. At the level of discourse practice such as the production of texts, Sukoharsono does so with great caution and accordance with the sciences he has had, so it can be said if the production of the text is a manifestation of his perspective on accounting and sustainability. At the level of sociocultural practice, there is an influence of the current business situation and the social community that exists. The analysis shows Sukoharsono's commitment to the world of accounting and sustainability, and that business people always continue to care about the survival of all beings in addition to fulfilling their benefits

<p>This study has three main objectives. First, to observe the concept of feminism inside Perempoen Bergerak newspaper’s contents that echoed by journalists in 1919-1920. Second, to observe the working process of Perempoen Bergerak’s redaction “kitchen” as well as the relation of women and men that gave birth to this newspaper. Third, to discover the correlations between Perempoen Bergerak newspaper and women’s movement at that time. This study uses critical discourse analysis method with feminist perspective. The model used in this study is a three-dimensional analysis of Norman Fairlough which illustrates that every event using language is a communicative event consisting of three dimensions namely ; text, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. Moreover, this study also uses feminist perspective and gender. The researcher found an unequal relationship because men still did not value women equally. The Ethical Political policies imposed by the Dutch at that time greatly influenced the social context of this newspaper. Freedom to taste open education, including freedom to organize, spawns and disseminates ideas for the advancement of women through mass media.</p>

Research that analyses critically on claims and additional information on a skincare product is a research that bring the novelty in critical discourse analysis, because the previous study focused on the advertisement or the packaging. Although most skincare products apply this method (using claims and additional information), researchers focus on one of the branded skincare products; Pond’s. The main reason is; this product is already widely known and used by the people in Indonesia. Trough critical discourse analysis model from van Dijk, the researchers discuss three dimensions (text, social cognition and social context) in claims and additional information in some products from Pond’s. There are seven Pond’s products as the data in this study. Besides, researchers used additional data in the form of a survey to five skincare products users. The results of the analysis are; (1) on the text dimension, the general aim is to attract the consumers to choose Pond’s as their skincare products. The present study is designed to explore the identity construction/reconstruction in Sea of Poppies. It is investigated in the backdrop of postcolonial theory. Norman Faircloughs Three-dimensional approach of critical discourse analysis is used to examine the construction and reconstruction of different types of (us/them) identities in the colonial era reflected in Sea of Poppies. The analysis deals with the descriptive dimension of Critical Discourse Analysis and discusses discourse as a text that investigates the functional linguistic elements of the overall narrative construction (identity construction/reconstruction) as a counter-discourse to power. It analyzes the identity construction on two levels of representation that is the relation between conversational participant/reader and text/discourse and the expressive which unveils attitudes and ideologies the study sheds light on the way the colonizers defined the other subjects just to define themselves as superior by associating the positive attributes to “us” and negative attributes to “them” thus made them peripheral other subjects.
