The aim: To study clinical efficiency of using the diode laser in the treatment of chronic catarrhal and hypertrophic gingivitis. Materials and methods: Treatment of 32 patients with chronic catarrhal gingivitis and 30 patients with hypertrophic gingivitis by basic therapy according to the protocols of dental care was carried out. The patients of the main groups were additionally subjected to laser irradiation of the affected areas of the gums with a diode laser. Results: The use of laser therapy in the treatment of chronic catarrhal gingivitis contributed to the pain relief, reducing of bleeding and edema of the gums in 68.8% of patients on the 3rd day of observation. On the 7th day, 93.8% of the examined patients had no inflammation in periodontal tissues. During treatment of hypertrophic gingivitis, anti-inflammatory and decongestant effects, improvements in the aesthetic appearance of the gums were revealed in 33.3% patients on the 3rd day of the examination; absence of inflammation, gingival bleeding and gum hypertrophy was diagnosed in 53.3% on the 7th day and in 80.0% patients on 14th day of follow-up. In the control group, similar changes were revealed only in 68.8% patients with catarrhal gingivitis and in 46.7% patients with hypertrophic gingivitis after complete course of drug treatment in 14 days of observation. Conclusions: The use of a diode laser in patients with chronic gingivitis has provided a reduction in the term required for the complete elimination of the inflammatory process and suspended its further progression.

Mechanical surface treatment and removal of the above and subgingival biofilm (Tartar ablation; SRP) are considered the most suitable tools for the treatment of periodontal inflammatory diseases, with the aim of destroying bacterial bioflim, reducing bacteria, and slowing down recolonization by pathogenic microorganisms. Often, however, the only S&RP are not enough, as there are patients who are experiencing relapses. Recently, laser therapy has been suggested as a potential tool to improve the outcome of periodontal non-surgical treatment. The objective of the following study was to evaluate the clinical healing of periodontal pockets treated with mechanical therapy, scaling and root planing, and diode laser application, compared to that obtained with non-surgical mechanical therapy alone. The study was designed as a randomized controlled clinical trial. Patients in the control group (13 patients) underwent conventional non-surgical therapy only, while patients in the test group (17 patients) were associated with conventional non-surgical treatment, a laser irradiation session. At baseline and after 6 months, the parameters of probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), gingival recession (REC) were assessed The main variable of this study was the PD (probing depth) FMPS and FMBS at follow-up improved in both groups. The FMPS baseline test group 32.59 ± 6.74 - follow up 12.00 ± 3.16. The baseline of the control group showed 33.00 ± 9.55, the follow up 13.15 ± 4.85 The FMBS baseline test group found 24.29 ± 5.01 while at follow 9.65 ± 2.69. The baseline control group 30.31 ± 7.74, Follow up 11.08 ± 2.33. There is a statistical significance. (P.VALUE 0.0001) There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of PD, CAL and BOP at baseline and at follow-up. PD Test group 4,89±1,58 3,95±0,85 0,0001 Control group 5,02±1,57 4,01±0,86 CAL (mm)Test group 0,89±2,29 0,77±1,91 Control group 0,28±1,38 0,24±1,14 REC Test group 0,19±0,49 0,19±0,51 Control group 0,06±0,29 0,57±029 BOP Test group 51,2% 23,5% Control group 54,0% 20,9% The results showed differences in both baseline and follow-up for REC. Test group 0,19±0,49 0,19±0,51-Control group0,06±0,29 0,57±029 In intra-group analyzes, there are differences between baseline and follow-up for all values, except for REC in the control group. The diode laser can be used as an appropriate device for periodontal treatments, but it can offer additional and significant benefits if used according to appropriate protocols and parameters, and especially if associated with non-surgical, manual and ultrasound periodontal instrumentation, always site-specific , as it is a tool that does not replace traditional methods.

Background and Aims: Tinnitus, which affects 15% of general populations and in 1-6%, the quality-of-life is seriously affected by a chronic condition. Chemical, oxidative, and emotional stressors are important in terms of the clinical course of tinnitus. Apelin mediates oxidative stress. We measured apelin levels in patients with tinnitus affecting both ears, but without hearing loss. Material and Methods: We enrolled patients diagnosed with bilateral idiopathic tinnitus. Tinnitus severity was determined using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory. We recorded the levels of plasma apelin-13 and biochemical parameters. Results: The mean apelin level of the control group was higher than that of the patient group (p = 0.002). A significant negative correlation was evident between the apelin level and the THI (r = 0.460, p = 0.003). The TG level was significantly higher in the patient than the control group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: As tinnitus severity increased, the apelin level fell. Thus, apelin may play a role in the pathophysiology of idiopathic tinnitus, and may be prescribed during follow-up to reduce oxidative stress in the future. Further clinical studies on the effects of the apelin/APJ system and the effects of antioxidants in patients with inflammatory diseases, are required. Key words: apelin, oxidative stress, tinnitus

Clinical tests were carried out in the representative group of patients with focal left-sided pneumonia (5 men and 7 women aged 18–41). Special-use product was included in in-patient department patients’ diet: 2 tablets in the first intake, then 1 tablet 4 times a day. Course of treatment was 21 days. Biologically active dietary supplement was prescribed together with general therapeutic treatment according to generally accepted standards of care. Control group included 15 patients randomized depending on sex and age who took only medicine. The author measured body temperature, studied the results of general blood tests, determined the level of C-reactive protein and seromucoids, performed R-graphy of lungs, electrocardiogram before and after treatment, analyzed clinical symptoms (cough, type of expectoration, shortness of breath). Composition of the special-use product was scientifically justified taking pharmacological characteristics of its ingredients and their active agents into account. Introduction of the biologically active dietary supplement in addition to the prescribed therapeutic treatment gave positive effect in relation to the inflammatory process: the patients could easier clear their throats from expectoration, coughed less frequently, and had less intense shortness of breath. It was evident that symptoms of disease recrudescence decreased. It appeared in the decreased intensity and length of fever. In case of acute respiratory viral infection the biologically active dietary supplement had antipyretic activity due to the anti-exudative effect of its ingredients. The author determined the anti-inflammatory effect and reduction of acute intoxication symptoms taking the results of general blood analysis into account. Patients who took special-use product had lower values of an inflammatory process marker – seromucoids. Tissues restored easily. The tested product has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic properties. It can be used in complex treatment of acute inflammatory diseases and recrudescence of chronic inflammatory processes.

To curb the diffusion of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), governments worldwide have introduced different policies, including lockdowns, social distancing, and mandatory mask wearing. Face mask wearing, especially, has an impact on the formation of first impressions, given that when meeting someone for the first time, individuals rely on the only available piece of information, the newly met person’s aesthetic appearance, in order to make initial estimations of other traits, such as competence, intelligence, or trustworthiness. However, face mask wearing affects the aesthetic appearance of an individual, creating uncertainty which, in turn, has been reported to reduce others’ perceived trustworthiness. In this paper, the influence of face mask wearing on strangers’ perceived trustworthiness and aesthetic appearance is assessed to verify the impact of this policy on impression formation. Participants (N = 71) have been instructed to assess the trustworthiness and the aesthetic appearance of a selection of 96 images depicting individuals of different ages (children, adults, and older adults), gender (men and women), and ethnicity (Asians or Caucasians). Participants were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Participants in the experimental group (N = 38) rated faces of individuals wearing a face mask, while participants in the control group rated the same faces but in the absence of a face mask. Images were presented in random order. For each face, participants were asked to rate the aesthetic appearance and perceived trustworthiness of the stranger on two different 100-point Likert scales. Results demonstrate that (i) the correlation between perceived trustworthiness and aesthetic appearance is not affected by the presence of a face mask, and (ii) age, but not ethnicity and gender, influences the magnitude of differences in perceived trustworthiness levels during mask wearing.

Background Basal and squamous cell carcinomas represent the most common cancers in North America. Their management is an important issue. Objectives The evaluation of cure rates of minimally invasive cutaneous carcinomas with curettage-cryosurgery compared to curettage-electrodesiccation, as well as the assessment of the aesthetic appearance of scars. Methods This prospective trial randomized 117 patients 1:1 to treatments of curettage-cryosurgery or curettage-electrodesiccation. They were then followed at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Results At 12-month follow-up, only one (1/49) patient had a recurrence of cutaneous carcinoma in the curettage-cryosurgery group and none (0/43) in the curettage-electrodesiccation group. Farrington-Manning analysis with a 5% margin of error showed the non-inferiority of the first method ( P = .04). For the aesthetic appearance of scars after 12 months, better results with curettage-cryosurgery procedure has been observed, but this was not statistically significant ( P = .80 and P = .27 for evaluations of patients and clinicians respectively). Limitations This study was mainly limited by its small sample size. Conclusion We have demonstrated that curettage-cryosurgery compared to curettage-electrodesiccation for the treatment of minimally invasive carcinomas is noninferior (comparable) with regards to cure rates at 12-month follow-up. No significant difference has been demonstrated for the appearance of scars.

<p>Excessive gingival pigmentation is a major aesthetic concern in modern society, though it is not a medical problem they consider it as a negative attribute. Patients with gingival hyperpigmentation usually complain and request cosmetic therapy, particularly if the pigmentation is visible during speaking and smiling. Various depigmentation methods, including burr abrasion, cryosurgery, electro-surgery, split thickness flap excision and surgical scraping techniques have been used with varying degrees of success. Recently, lasers have been used to ablate cells containing and producing the melanin pigment. The present study was undertaken to compare the clinical effectiveness and patient comfort of surgical scrapping and diode laser technique used for gingival depigmentation for a follow up period of 6 months.20 subjects participated in this split mouth study. The clinical evaluation parameters included Extent and Intensity of gingival hyperpigmentation, post-operative gingival bleeding and pain. On follow up examination at 6th month there was no statistical difference in repigmentation extent and intensity between diode laser and surgical scraping techniques. The mean pain scores for treated sites with diode laser were significantly lower than surgical scrapping technique at 24 hours (t-value=2.430, p-value=0.02). The postoperative gingival bleeding at end of procedure was significantly lower with diode laser than surgical scrapping technique (p-value=&lt;0.0001). There was no statistical difference in postoperative re-pigmentation and clinical efficacy among the subjects between surgical scraping and diode laser technique at 6th month follow up. Diode laser technique provides better haemostasis and good visibility at the surgical site. The post-operative patient comfort is better at the surgical sites treated with diode laser than surgical scrapping method. Hence, both the techniques are used for depigmentation procedures depending on the severity and gingival biotype and patient acceptance.</p>

The analysis of the relevant literature testifies to the high efficiency of using various mineral waters as a component of integrated treatment of periodontal diseases. Their use is promising as it significantly reduces the medication load on the body. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the preventive and therapeutic complex based on mineral water "Morshinska № 1" in the treatment of generalized periodontitis in patients with gastrointestinal diseases. The samples of species composition of anaerobic microorganisms in periodontal pockets were taken from 98 patients immediately after the treatment completion and in 12 -18 month follow up period. The test group included 52 patients with generalized periodontitis who received the above mentioned complex; the control group consisted of 46 patients with generalized periodontitis I-III stages of severity, who received standard therapy to treat periodontal lesions. Detection of pathogens in the oral cavity was carried out by the method of multimeric polymerase-chain reaction. In the long-term follow up, despite a slight increase in the number of patients in the main group who were found to have anaerobic species of microorganisms in their periodontal pockets, the number of the subjects, who were diagnosed as having Helicobacter pylori and Treponema denticola decreased in 2.8 times; the number of patients with Fusobacterium nucleatum and Prevotella intermedia cut down in 2.5 times; and the number of carriers Bacteroides forsythus, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans lowered in 1.7 times. Among the patients of the control group, who received standard therapy for generalized periodontitis, the number of the subjects who were diagnosed as having anaerobic species of microorganisms in the gingival pockets, the number of the letter went back to the reference values. Thus, the decrease in the number of patients with generalized periodontitis of the test group, who are carriers of anaerobic species of microorganisms, has demonstrated the effectiveness of the prophylactic and treatment complex based on mineral water "Morshinska №1" for the therapy of inflammatory periodontal tissues.

Background and Aim: Craniotomy is a surgery in which a flap of the skull is opened to access the affected area in the brain. Since paying attention to the aesthetic aspects of the patient’s head after surgery is very important for the patient’s mental health and social life, surgeons should try to adopt a method that minimizes damage to the scalp and follicles. Methods and Materials/Patients: In this clinical trial study, patients who were candidates for frontotemporoparietal craniotomy surgery were selected. Twenty-three selected patients were randomly divided into 2 groups consisting of a 12-member intervention group (L.G. Kempe) and an 11-member control group (Standard Reverse Question mark). Patients underwent a pre-operative biopsy of the scalp and a follow-up biopsy 6 months post-operatively. In the evaluation of aesthetic aspects, the created scar was scored using the Stony Brook Scar Evaluation Scale (SBSES). Patients were also directly asked about their satisfaction with the operation and the scar created. Results: In 23 patients, the results showed that patients who underwent LG Kempe incision craniotomy received significantly higher scores in SBSES scoring evaluations (P=0.005). There was no significant difference in subjective evaluations by asking patients about their satisfaction with the scar site and the operation area (P=0.75). In the analysis of post-operative hair follicle density between the 2 groups (P=0.910), general changes in pre-operative and post-operative follicle density in all samples (P= 0.657) as well as comparing the changes between 2 groups, no significant difference was found between follicular density changes between the intervention and control groups (P=0.137). Conclusion: Patients treated with L.G. Kempe incision had significantly higher SBSES scores, which can be considered an aesthetically superior method that could prevent the formation of undesirable scar.

A smile is an important part of the attractiveness and beauty of a modern person [1]. Today, more than ever, it’s important to be a well-groomed and healthy person, in whom “...everything should be fine...” as the classic said. The vast majority of patients tend to lead a healthy lifestyle, which includes dental health as well [3]. Health of periodontal tissues directly depends not only on the proper oral hygiene carried out by patients at home, but also on an individually selected set of therapeutic measures performed by the dentist [4, 5]. Thus, dentists and related specialists should provide highly professional medical care in the treatment of inflammatory diseases of periodontal tissues to achieve maximum results, stop the inflammatory process and restore the periodontium as a whole [6, 7].
