There are prezented results of a study of early hybrid generations of bread spring wheat with synthetics (ABD genomic structure) combining the genomes of Triticum durum Desf. and Aegilops tauschii Coss. for inheritance of plants height, ear productivity elements: length, spikelet and grain number, grain weight; 1000 grain weight. In all five combinations, transgressive forms were found out on different traits with a frequency of 6% to 8% and a transgression degree of 6 to 17%. In the hybrid Kharkivska 26 / AD 68.112 / Ward // Ae.squarrosa (369), such plants are distinguished on five traits: plant height and parameters of the main ear – length, spikelet and grain number, grain weight. The presence of transgressions indicates an increase in the manifestation level of these traits in bread wheat.

Aim. Assessment of the water-holding capacity of leaf blades and spikes of lines obtained by hybridization of bread spring wheat with synthetics Triticum durum Desf.–Aegilops tauschii Coss. as characteristics of their drought resistance. Identification of lines with a lower water-yielding capacity and accordingly with a higher water-holding capacity than that of the recurrent variety Kharkovskaya 26. Results and Discussion. In all three years of research, in all samples, the moisture-yielding coefficient per unit of dry weight was higher for the leaf blade of the second leaf, lower (on average, 1.5 times) for the first leaf, and the smallest for the ear (on average, 2.0-5 , 7 times compared to the first sheet). This corresponds to the regularity of V.R. Zalensky on the increase in xeromorphism from the lower to the upper tiers of the plant. The moisture-yielding coefficient of the upper (flag) leaf is closely positively correlated with that of the second leaf: r = 0.98-0.99. The leaf moisture-yielding coefficient correlates significantly, to an average extent, negatively with the yield of lines and the weight of grain per spike in unfavorable, arid 2015 and 2017 (r = −0.49 to −0.62) and tends to be negative in a more favorable 2016 (r = −0.26 to −0.30). The lines with a greater ability to retain leaf blades moisture during the period of caryopsis formation tend to higher yields and the formation of ears with a larger grain mass. The moisture-yielding coefficient of the spike, in contrast to the leaf blades, in all three years positively correlated with the yield and grain weight per spike. The positive correlation of the ear moisture yield with the yield and ear productivity can be explained by an increase in the ear attracting ability in more productive forms. The lowest water-yielding capacity of the first (0.58-1.22) and (0.88-1.74) second leaves, corresponding to a greater water-holding capacity, in all the research years were the lines DK 30 GK 31 GK 34, GK 37, DK 39, DK 48, in which this indicator was less than that of the recurrent variety Kharkovskaya 26 (respectively, for the first leaf 1.26-1.43, for the second 1.77-2.08). The moisture yield of an ear of these lines in 2015 was less than that of Kharkovskaya 26, in 2016 (excluding DK 48) and 2017 - more than that of this variety. Thus, by hybridization of bread spring wheat with synthetics, there were obtained the lines with a lower water-yielding capacity therefore a higher water-retaining capacity of leaves than in the recurrent variety Kharkovskaya 26. The average yield of the above-mentioned lines over the research years was from 245 to 297 g / m2, which is higher than that of Kharkovskaya 26. The average for the research years grain weight per an ear of the lines with low moisture yield was from 2.1 to 2.7 g, therefore, it was higher than in the variety Kharkovskaya 26. At the same time, the relationships of the moisture yield with the grain weight from an ear and yield are not unambiguous. Conclusions. By crossing the spring wheat cultivar Kharkivska 26 with synthetics of the ABD genomic structure with subsequent backcrosses, lines with a lower moisture yield of the upper (0.58-1.22) and (0.88-1.74) second leaves were obtained than that of the recurrent cultivar - respectively 1,26-1,43 and 1,77–2,08, which corresponds to a higher water-holding capacity: DK 30, DK 31, DK 34, DK 37, DK 39, DK 48. There is an increase in water-holding capacity from the second leaf to the ear which corresponds to the regularity of V.R. Zalensky. The lines identified by the low moisture yield of leaf blades exceeded the recurrent variety Kharkovskaya 26 in yield and grain weight per ear. At the same time, relationships of the moisture yield with the grain weight from an ear and yield are not unambiguous.

Data from two experiments was analysed in order to determine the effects of Septoria nodorum Berk. on the yield of spring wheat. In the first experiment the cultivar Hankkija’s Taava was artificially inoculated with low spore concentration suspensions of S. nodorum. The resulting disease reduced grain yield by 10%, 1000-grain weight by 14%, and hectorlitre weight by 5.7 %. An examination of the ears from the main stems revealed that the pathogen induced a reduction in all yield components but especially in grain number/ear and grain weight. In the second experiment a total of 28 cultivars or lines were studied and the correlation between grain yield/ear and disease severity was found to be negative but low. No consistent trend among the correlations was seen and some susceptible cultivars suffered only slightly from the disease while other fairly resistant cultivars showed great losses. The results are discussed in relation to compensatory mechanisms and potential disease tolerance in wheat.

A field experiment with a malting spring barley crop (2007&ndash;2009) was conducted in south-eastern Poland on Cambisols. Conventional (CST) and simplified soil tillage systems (SST) were used in combination with NPK fertilizer enriched with S and Mg. Analysis of the results showed a beneficial effect of CST and NPK fertilization with S and Mg on yield and yield structure. SST and NPK fertilization decreased grain yield by 6.6% and 6.2%. CST increased grain number per ear, grain weight per ear and plant height, while the SST decreased the value of these characteristics by 7.9, 5.7 and 5.3%. Number of ears (standardized regression coefficient b = 0.330), grain number per ear (b = 0.488) and 1000 grain weight (b = 0.360) were found to be significant for predicting grain yield. Significant correlations were found between grain yield and yield components of spring barley. Grain yield per ha was positively correlated with number of ears (rn = 72 = 0.330), grain number per ear (rn = 72 = 0.488), 1000 grain weight (rn = 72 = 0.359), grain weight per ear&nbsp;(rn = 72 = 0.528) and plant height (rn = 72 = 0.246).

A study on genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for seed yield and component traits was made in 40 genotypes of riceduring kharif 2011-2012 at SHIATS, Allahabad. The analysis of variance showed highly significant differences among the treatments for all the 13 traits under study. The genotypes namely CN 1446-5-8-17-1-MLD4 and CR 2706 recorded highest mean performance for panicles per hill and grain yield. The highest genotypic and phenotypic variances (VG and VP) were recorded for spikelets per panicle (3595.78 and 3642.41) followed by biological yield (355.72 and 360.62) and plant height (231.48 and 234.35).High heritability (broad sense) coupled with high genetic advance was observed for plant height, flag leaf length, panicles per hill, tillers per hill, days to maturity, spikelet’s per panicle, biological yield, harvest index, 1000 grain weight and grain yield, indicating that selection will be effective based on these traits because they were under the influence of additive and additive x additive type of gene action. Highest coefficient of variation (PCV and GCV) was recorded for tillers per hill (18.42% and 17.23%), panicle per hill (19.76 % and 18.68%), spikelet’s per panicle (34.30 and34.07 %), biological yield (28.31 % and 28.12 %), 1000 grain weight (15.57 % and 15 31 %) and grain yield (46.66% and 23.54 %), indicating that these traits are under the major influence of genetic control, therefore the above mentioned traits contributed maximum to higher grain yield compared to other traits, indicating grain yield improvement through the associated traits.

<p>New wetlands field generally has low productivity, so a technology is needed for improve productivity. New Superior Variety (NSV) is a technology that is considered easy to be adopted by farmers, so knowing a NSV that is able to adapt to the characteristics and conditions of new wetlands field is a must. The study of adaptive NSV on new wetlands field in Boven Digoel Regency is still limited so that the NSV recommendation for farmers is also still limited. The purpose of this study was to examine the growth and production of new superior varieties on the new wetlands fields in Boven Digoel Regency. The study was conducted on new wetlands in Asiki Village, Jair District during April-August 2019. Randomized Complete Block Design was employed with 3 replications using Inpari 36, Inpari 37, Inpago Rindang 1, Inpago Rindang 2 dan Inpara 8. The results showed different varieties perform different agronomy characters observed (plant height, number of tillers, panicle length, number of grains per panicle, filled grain, per panicle, empty grain per panicle and 1000 grain weight). Inpari 37 produced 5.3 ton/ha Dried Unhulled Rice, the highest production compared to other varieties, so that it could potentially be developed in Boven Digoel’s new wetlands field. Productivity may still be increased by improving soil fertility conditions.</p>

Host-pathogen interaction between spring wheat and Septoria nodorum Berk. with applications for wheat breeding were studied. Ultrastructure of interactions was studied using electron microscopic techniques. Following inoculation, conidia of S. nodorum germinate, form appressoria anda penetration peg which directly penetrates through the cell walls. It is suggested that most penetration attempts fail because of cellular defence reactions, formation of papillae and cell wall alterations. Inoculation with low spore concentration reduced grain yield of Hankkija’s Taava cultivar by 10 % and 1000-grain weight by 14 %. Inoculation with high spore concentration on large plots of Tähti cultivar reduced grain yield by 32 % and 1000-grain weight by 18 %. Inoculation with high spore concentration on normal breeding plots of Tähti cultivar reduced grain yield by 35 % and 1000-grain weight by 21 % and the grain yield of Kadett cultivar by 27 % and 1000-grain weight by 20 %. Inheritance studies on F2 progenies of spring wheat crosses involving susceptible and moderately or highly resistant parents suggest that heredity component of symptom expression is moderate level and breeding success depends mainly on efficient screening techniques. Resistance was associated with tallness in crosses, and cultivar trials suggest that resistance is positively associated with late maturation time. Field screening techniques based on small plots and artificial inoculation showed that the most resistant entries were wild Triticum species and late and tall cultivars. Seedling plant tests based on attached seedling leaves and detached leaves revealed easily the most resistant and most susceptible cultivars. The overall correlation between seedling tests and field tests was quite high. The results are discussed in relation to wheat breeding strategies for resistance to S. nodorum.

Barley is a small grain cereal, tolerant to high temperatures and drought. Due to this characteristic, it can be regarded as a promising crop for production in dry conditions. Research on five spring landraces of two-rowed barley lasted two experimental years (2011 and 2012) in agro-ecological conditions of Banja Luka. In the experiment, the standard cropping practices were applied, without irrigation. The experiment was set as a complete randomized design with four replications. All measurements were performed in 10 plants per replication. Morphological characteristics included plant height (cm), spike length (cm), grain number per spike and grain weight per spike (g). Obtained data were subjected to two-way analysis of variance with landrace and growing season as main factors. Significant treatment or interaction effects were further analysed by Fisher's least significant difference (LSD) test, often utilized for pairwise comparisons among arithmetic means. In all tested traits the maximum average values were obtained in barley landrace AM2, i.e. the plant height (86.89 cm), the spike length (8.90 cm), the grain number per spike (24.74) and the grain weight per spike (1.17 g). Due to these facts, two-rowed barley landrace AM2 can be marked as the most productive in this research, bearing a potential for different crop breeding practices.

The experiment was at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh–2202 during late Rabi season (December-March) of 2015. It was two factorial experiment (1) irrigation level and (2) nitrogen rate. Irrigation significantly influenced on yield and yield contributing characters except harvest index. The highest plant height (79.69cm), maximum number of total tillers plant-1 (4.725), number of grains spike-1 (40.61), spike length (11.80cm), 1000 grain weight (28.67g), grain yield (3.227 t ha-1), harvest index (41.26%) were obtained by mulching treatment. Nitrogen rate significantly influenced the yield and yield contributing characters. The highest plant height (80.37cm), maximum number of total tillers plant-1 (5.124), number of grains spike-1 (40.85), spike length (10.37cm), 1000 grain weight (31.86g), grain yield (3.792 t ha-1), harvest index (41.69%) were obtained by the application of 180 kg N ha-1. The combined effect of Irrigation and nitrogen significantly interacted on yield and yield contributing characters. The highest plant height (83.44cm), number of total tillers plant-1 (5.66), number of grains spike-1 (41.60), 1000 grain weight (36.66g), grain yield (4.32 t ha-1) and harvest index (47.36%) were obtained by application of 180 kg N ha-1 with mulching. The present study revealed that high dose of nitrogen 180 kg ha-1 and mulching practice can compensate low production of wheat even at late sowing. Progressive Agriculture 29 (3): 213-220, 2018
