Learning and teaching synonyms for Iraqi EFL students is a difficult task. Learning synonyms means learning how words can be related to each other. Understanding synonyms helps students to understand the meaning of the word easily and avoid mistakes committed in synonyms as a result of their knowledge concerning this area. Iraqi EFL students face difficulties in using appropriate synonyms. This study was conducted in the Department of English, College of Education for Women, University of Baghdad, to indicate first-year students’ incompetence in using synonyms. The participants of this study, fifty female students during the first semester, were chosen randomly for the academic year 2019-2020. In order to achieve the aim of this study, the researcher used pre and posttest as tools for collecting data. The data was analyzed by the SPSS program. Figures and tables were used to present the data. The present study reveals the difficulties that occurred when Iraqi EFL students used synonyms. This is due to the need for information about English equivalent words, then suggests suitable solutions for them. Also this study reveals that the domains theory has indeed been demonstrated to be effective in precisely understanding the semantic domains of English lexical concepts.

The goals of this research are (1) to know what students’ responses toward WH question tehnique; (2) to know whether the WH Question can improve students’ math in English. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The writer described and analyzed the students’ mistakes in speaking skill using local materials. The research was carried out at the first year students of math department in 2016/2017 academic year. It was strated from September 2016 to January 2017. The population was the first semester students of math department in academic year of 2016/2017. The number of population were 21 students. The results of this research were (1) the tudents gave good responses toward the WH Questions learning, and (2) the WH questions improved the Math students’ ability in learning English. Keywords: Speaking, Local-wisdom, WH-questions

The attempts of the present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of collaborative learning to enhance English communicative competence and evaluating students’ satisfaction towards the instruction. The participants in this study were 1,471 the first-year students enrolled in the first semester, 2017 academic year. The students’ English proficiency according to the CEFR was A1. The instruments used were lesson plans, pre-test and post-test and satisfaction questionnaire. The lessons were comprised of various collaborative learning activities emphasizing at the following topics: self-introduction, school schedule, telling time, asking and giving information, food, leisure, describing people, describing things and giving direction. The period of experiment was 20 hours. The independent sample t-test was calculated to find the differences. The findings revealed that there were statistically significant differences at the level of .01 after teaching with collaborative learning. This indicated that the students’ communicative competence significantly improved. Besides, the satisfaction questionnaire was distributed at the end of the instruction and the results indicated that the students had a positive satisfaction towards the instruction.

The article is devoted to changes in the level of empathy and some structural components of social and psychological adaptation caused by social deprivation in a pandemic, which is the purpose of the work. The paper presents the results of an empirical study conducted in the first semester of the 2020-2021 academic year, when Samara State Technical University students were on distance learning. The sample consisted of 248 first-year students. The basis of the observation is a longitudinal research, during which the communicative activity of students in interaction with the teacher and with each other was recorded. In addition, students solved situational problems containing a description of the conflict, for a way out of which they had to offer solutions: none, one or several. The study confirmed the hypothesis put forward about possible changes in the level of empathy, the ability to solve situational problems and social and psychological adaptation in general among students studying remotely. Isolation in a pandemic is an objective measure for which humanity was not ready.

The aim: Is to determine informatively significant indicators of the physical state of the first-year students of higher education institutions. Materials and methods: The study was conducted at Prydniprovska State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture in 2019-2020. The study involved 100 first-year female students of the main department between the ages of 17 and 18. The state of health of female students, their motivational needs, and the level of their physical development, physical fitness, and functional state were studied. Results: The study summarized knowledge and experience on the problem of selecting means for assessing the physical state of students, analyzed the motivational needs and health of female students, as well as identified informative indicators of the physical state of the female students by factor analysis. Conclusions: The study indicates the need for an obligatory survey on the health of the first-year female students at the beginning of the academic year; the inclusion of the elements of modern fitness programs in the curriculum of the Physical Education discipline and the organization of sectional classes in accordance with the results of the survey if possible in order to increase students’ motivation to attend classes and differentiate training in classes aimed at improving the physical state of female students.

The study aimed at identifying career counseling needs of students at Sultan Qaboos University of the academic year 2006/2007 and determining the differences according to the gender, college, and father's educational level variables. An instrument was developed by researchers. It consisted of (60) items distributed into four areas (decision making, career information, and understanding of the self, abilities and interests). A sample random sample of (493) male and female students were selected with consideration to all the variables. The results revealed that students had a high need to career information. The results further indicated, that there was no significant difference among students according to the gender, college, and father's educational level. However, there was a significant difference among students in regard to the year of a, studying. Based on the study findings the researchers recommended implement career information workshops and groups counseling for skills building and groups designed for career exploration provided to all students especially to the first year students.

This study is descriptive quantitative research by using a test to collect the data needed. Iraqi English as a foreign language (EFL) students face difficulties in differentiating between using prepositions correctly. This study has been performed in the Department of English at College of Education for Women, University of Baghdad, to diagnosis the difficulties of English prepositions that face Iraqi first-year students at the University since multi-uses and meanings of prepositions. For Iraqi EFL students, prepositions regarded as a problematic criterion. This study aims at examining the problems that EFL students commit mistakes in using English prepositions of place on. It also highlights the causes of those problems. Correct handling proposition is not because most of them have different functions straightforward, and different prepositions have the same uses. For this reason, the researcher adopted pre and post-tests to evaluate the output of the means of the students' results. The researcher used SPSS to analyze data.

The current study aimed to know the level of the phenomenon of cyber bullying among university students، and the relationship between practicing this behavior "cyber bullying" and psychological loneliness. The researchers applied the cyber bullying scale to find out the level of this phenomenon among the students. Also، they applied the measure of psychological loneliness to determine the level of the feeling of psychological loneliness among the students. The sample of the study consisted of (133) female students of the College of Education at Umm Al-Qura University، included all College specialties and all levels of study during the first semester of the academic year 1440 AH. The results of the study showed that the mean averages of all expressions of the cyber bullying scale ranged between (medium and high). This means that the terms of the scale illustrate the reality of female students in practicing the behaviors that express cyber bullying. The mean averages of all expressions of the psychological loneliness scale were medium، which indicate that the sample members also suffer from psychological loneliness. The results also showed a statistically significant correlation between the psychological loneliness and the behavior of cyber bullying at 0.05 level.

This paper examines the perceptions of first-year students (freshmen) of accounting at Akdeniz University (AU) and Kahramanmaras Sutcu Imam University (KSU) to explore a range of factors which impact on students’ learning: their motives for entering higher education, their rationale for selecting an accounting programme, their preparedness for further study and their expectations. The study also explores the influence of these antecedent variables on academic performance in the first accounting module. Data was collected from 420 accounting students in first year classes at the AU and KSU. The data required for this study was collected via a questionnaire which was developed by Byrne and Flood in 2005 known as the Motives, Expectations and Preparedness for University (MEPU) questionnaire. Results show that there is a relation between interest in accounting as professional career and accounting first grade. First semester average mark shows positively that the willingness of accounting as a career influence the grades positively. KSU students rated higher than AU students in some statements of motives for attending university, preparedness for university, reason for choosing accounting programme. It can also be said that female students and KSU students have stronger motives and higher expectations for entering higher education.
