Palestinian literature received significance after Nakba (1948 Palestine-Israel war) and Naksa (1967 Arab-Israel war) and it laid an impact on Palestinian writers and there emerged a new form of literature called Palestinian American literature which got recognition in the 1990s internationally. After Nakba and Naksa many Palestinian families migrated to America. These Palestinians wrote literature in English that is called Palestinian-American literature. The aim of the stylistic analysis of Abulhawa's work to trace out how the writer constructs reality through lexical categories. This thesis also analyzes the work of Palestinian-American writer Abulhawa's novel, The Blue between Sky and Water, and focuses specifically on how the writer achieves her aims. At the same time, this stylistic analysis of The Blue between Sky and Water shed light on the use of Arabic words in English fiction which represent the culture and identity of the Palestinian nation. It explores the dilemma of Palestine that they become a foreigner in their native land. The researcher employed a mixed-method approach to conduct the present study. The researcher used Corpus stylistics tools to analyze the novel. The researcher traced around 6288 concrete nouns and 1634 abstract nouns from the sample respectively. The extensive use of concrete nouns showed that the main purpose of the writer was to get homeland and this piece of writing was not only art for art sake rather art for life's sake. The researcher traced out around 1400 adjectives from the sample of study.

While there has been a sustained interest in conducting stylistic studies on fiction, specifically novels and short stories, the literature about stylistic analysis of flash fiction as a literary genre remains scant. Thus, the present study attempts to conduct a lexical and syntactic analysis of Ian Rosales Casocot’s “There Are Other Things Beside Brightness And Light.” The analysis was anchored in two of the four linguistic and stylistic categories proposed by Leech and Short (2007), namely lexical and grammatical. To communicate the narrator’s traumatic experience, the following lexical categories were found: words that evoke the main character’s recollected sensations, particularly visual; a Latin expression, and slang words; concrete nouns providing access to the feelings of the main character; abstract nouns connoting psychological or emotional processes; and adjectives depicting sensory imageries and representing, along with some verbs, psychological states that carry negative connotations. Stative verbs vis-à-vis dynamic ones echo the impressions of attachment and detachment, and memory in the story, which link to the adverbs of manner in the text. On the other hand, these grammatical features contributed to text interpretation: cumulative or loose sentences depicting a series of rapid thoughts of the narrator who recalls a traumatic experience; mini-paragraphs, i.e., text fragmentation, foregrounding the theme of the narrative; a verb-tense shift from past to future, and the demonstrative pronouns that and this representing the struggle of the narrator to escape from the vexatious memory of pain and trauma; and the em dash paving the way for the narrator’s emotional rumination. The stylistic analysis, particularly lexical and syntactic, provides a more objective and profound understanding of the underlying meanings of the FF under study.

While the second chapter of Style in Narrative addressed authorial canon (scope) and story (level), the third chapter considers a single work (scope) and narration (level). Faulkner’s novel As I Lay Dying seems to present a straightforward case of multiple narration. However, attention to details reveals that the novel is much more complex and apparently contradictory. In other words, the narrational style is marked by ambiguity and hints of untrustworthiness, along with unresolved issues of narrator definition (including, for example, hints that Addie could be in effect narrating the entire novel). The chapter shows not only the relevance of narration to style (and of stylistic analysis to narration), but the relevance of indeterminacy and ambivalence to style (and stylistic analysis) as well. The chapter concludes by examining some thematic implications of these features of narrational style and what they may suggest about Faulkner’s relation to American literature and literary modernism.

El artículo se propone abordar las nuevas formas de aprendizaje ubicuo con las tabletas en el ámbito universitario actual. Vincular las tabletas a la universidad con la comunidad educativa, es una de las exigencias metodológicas activas que el alumnado requiere para explorar algunos de los cambios que los nuevos contextos en la formación del estudiante universitario, así como la forma en que éstas impactan en el pensamiento y el aprendizaje, encaminadas a partir de la respuesta que brinda a las demandas y necesidades que se presentan en el ámbito académico. A través del diseño de investigación descriptivo, con un enfoque mixto, se analiza una muestra de 213 estudiantes de dos universidades, integrando las técnicas cualitativas (directivos) y cuantitativas. Para la validación de la encuesta, se utilizó la técnica de expertos, seleccionados mediante el procedimiento de «Coeficiente K». El análisis del cuestionario se hizo a través de la prueba de Cronbach, siendo significativa con 0,897 de grado de fiabilidad. Los resultados señalaron que existe un desconocimiento sobre su función pedagógica, poca valoración y preparación para emplearla en el aprendizaje y para cambiar las prácticas formativas tradicionales. Además, una oportunidad de aprovechar estos dispositivos es poder articular conocimientos académicos, científicos y tecnológicos, con las diferentes realidades que germinan en el contexto universitario. Se concluye que el uso de las tabletas es un campo de investigación y práctica educativa en auge por las tecnologías, por lo que se hace necesario conocer su potencial en la apropiación del conocimiento en la educación y el aprendizaje significativo. This article aims to address the new forms of ubiquitous learning with tablets in current university environments. Bringing tablets into the university educational community is one of the methodological demands that students require in order to explore some of the changes in the new contexts which define university students’ education. Besides, it is also necessary to shed light on the impact of tablets on the thinking and learning processes which academic contexts aim to activate in students. Through a descriptive research design, with a mixed-method approach, a sample of 210 students from two universities is analyzed, integrating qualitative (managing staff) and quantitative techniques. To validate the survey, the technique of experts’ opinions was applied—the experts were selected through the "Coefficient K" procedure. The analysis of the questionnaire was done through a Cronbach test and the degree of reliability obtained was significant (0,897). The results reveal a certain resistance to change traditional teacher training practices, a poor perception of the educational potential of tablets and a lack of knowledge about their pedagogical role. A clear possibility to take advantage of these devices consists of articulating academic, scientific and technological knowledge based on the different realities which emerge from university contexts. The present article concludes by stating that the use of tablets is a research strand which is booming due to new technologies and, therefore, it seems necessary to raise awareness of its great potential when it comes to the articulation of knowledge and the implementation of meaningful learning.

This paper aims to employ one of the corpus stylistic methods to analyze Thomas Harris's novel, The Silence of the Lambs. Recently, technology has invaded our lives. To put it differently, researchers depend highly on computers to access and gain information about certain data. Thus, it is crucial to keep up with the up-to-date developments concerning computational methodologies and toolkits. Corpus stylistics helps to find certain features that cannot be understood without using the techniques of computers. In order to achieve this goal, a quantitative and qualitative methodology is applied. Corpus stylistics helps to analyze lengthy texts more efficiently. This is not to say that it substitutes the manual stylistic one. In fact, both the corpus and manual stylistic analyses work hand in glove, and they complement each other. The tool that is used to conduct the analysis by examining keywords and key semantic domains is Wmatrix3. In addition to the previous tool, AntConc is a complementary tool to investigate n- grams in the novel and to point out their significance to the overall interpretation.

This paper examines the role of traditional physical archives within Translation Studies research, investigating the contribution that such resources can add, providing information that otherwise would not be available in existing scholarly volumes, academic journals and digital material. The question is illustrated with the specific case of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1925) and its first two translations into Italian, carried out respectively in 1936 by Cesare Giardini and 1950 by Fernanda Pivano. Both translations were published by Mondadori, Italy’s largest publishing company, as part of two different series, I romanzi della palma and the later Medusa collection.Adopting a microhistory approach, the study of these translations, through the resource-rich archives of the Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori in Milan, can shed light on a number of issues that the text alone cannot provide: documentation, including the other books published in the same series, highlights the target audience that Mondadori were seeking to address; the paratextual elements of the books themselves are revealing of the prominence (or otherwise) of American literature in general and Fitzgerald in particular within the Italian literary polysystem at the time of their publication; in the case of the first translation, readers’ reports on the novel indicate how the censors of the Fascist regime might receive the somewhat racy themes contained in the book, while, in the case of the 1950 translation, correspondence between the publisher, literary agents and the translator herself highlight the many issues surrounding the ultimate publication of the volume.

Este artículo responde al debate que se produce en el campo de la teoría literaria en torno a la naturaleza de la novela estadounidense postmoderna. Mientras que algunos autores afirmaron a principios del milenio que la novela estaba muerta, una nueva generación de jóvenes escritores estadounidenses fueron responsables de un nuevo compromiso con el género por parte del público. Con esto en mente, este estudio busca arrojar luz sobre la naturaleza de la literatura escrita por estos novelistas que buscan distanciarse del callejón sin salida del posmodernismo. Nuestra premisa es que durante la crisis de principios del siglo veinte, que provoca un replanteamiento del concepto de posmodernidad, los jóvenes autores estadounidenses volvieron su mirada hacia las ideas del trascendentalismo estadounidense como una herramienta para recuperar el proyecto inacabado de la modernidad interrumpido por el postmodernismo. This article responds to the debate in the field of literary theory around the nature of post-postmodern American novels. While some authors claimed at the turn of the millennium that the novel was dead, a new generation of American writers were responsible for a new engagement with the genre on the part of the public. With this in mind, this study seeks to shed light on the nature of the literature written by young novelists seeking to distance themselves from the dead end of postmodernism. Our premise is that during the crisis that brings about a rethinking of the concept of postmodernity, the young American authors turned their gaze towards ideas from American transcendentalism as a tool to recover the unfinished Project of modernity.

This paper aims to explore the text style of Margaret Drabble’s novel A Summer Bird-Cage. Specifically, it is intended to scrutinize how Drabble’s language style vivifies her representation of some women characters’ perplexity and predicament when they are confronted with problems related to value orientations and lifestyles. The present paper’s significance lies in a methodological breakthrough and resultant interdisciplinary insights. To achieve the main aims specified above, this paper will explore the following research question: stylistically, how some lexical categories such as nouns, verbs, and clusters are related to the spatio-temporal order of the novel and to its discourse prosodies or “tone of characters” speeches. As a whole, this study is situated in a research context where previous and many current studies of A Summer Bird-Cage are primarily qualitative. To complement them, this paper embodies mixed methods research, featuring in a computer-aided, data-based, corpus stylistic approach to the style in Drabble’s novel. Based on a multi-layered investigation of Drabble’s language use and a close corpus stylistic analysis of it, this paper obtains some interesting findings as follows. First, some young, educated British women’s complicated psychological experiences are thematized via narratorial introspection that centers around characters’ processing of mind. Second, the tone of the women characters’ speeches and the underlying attitude to some important issues are often negative, indicative of the women characters’ bewilderment. In short, this paper adopts a corpus stylistic approach to thematic studies and character analysis as a contribution to the body of specialized knowledge of Drabble’s art of fiction.

Abstract. The ability to identify and communicate emotions is essential to psychological well-being. Yet research focusing exclusively on emotion concepts has been limited. This study examined nouns that represent emotions (e.g., pleasure, guilt) in comparison to nouns that represent abstract (e.g., wisdom, failure) and concrete entities (e.g., flower, coffin). Twenty-five healthy participants completed a lexical decision task. Event-related potential (ERP) data showed that emotion nouns elicited less pronounced N400 than both abstract and concrete nouns. Further, N400 amplitude differences between emotion and concrete nouns were evident in both hemispheres, whereas the differences between emotion and abstract nouns had a left-lateralized distribution. These findings suggest representational distinctions, possibly in both verbal and imagery systems, between emotion concepts versus other concepts, implications of which for theories of affect representations and for research on affect disorders merit further investigation.
