The present study adopts a corpus stylistic approach to: (1) examine a relationship between textual patterns of colour words in The Great Gatsby and their symbolic interpretations and (2) investigate the ways those patterns are handled in Thai translations. Distribution and co-occurrence patterns were analysed for colour words that are key in the novel: white, grey, yellow and lavender. The density and frequent patterns of each word are argued to foreground an association between the colour word and particular concepts, pointing to symbolic meaning potentials related to the novel’s themes of socioeconomic inequality and destructive wealth. The textual patterns are compared with what occurs in three Thai translations of the novel. While most of the colour images are directly translated, non-equivalents tend to be applied to figurative uses of the colour terms. This results in some changes in textual patterns of the colour words in the translated texts, which can in turn affect readers’ interpretations of colour symbolism in the novel.

The conventional justification for moving from income distribution to intergenerational mobility analysis is that the movie encompasses the snapshot and is normatively superior as the basis for assessing policy. Such a perspective underpins many an argument for shifting the focus from income redistribution, which is said to equalize outcomes, to equalizing opportunity by increasing mobility through education policy such as equal provision of public education. This chapter argues that this perspective can be misleading. It shows that normative evaluation of income mobility in any event often falls back on a snapshot perspective. Further, the snapshot itself often contains the seeds of the movie, as posited in the Great Gatsby Curve. Income redistribution can itself improve mobility even if that is the only objective. The chapter thus speaks in praise of snapshots.

В статье обсуждается вопрос о понимании текста на основе восстановления читателем смысла «поэтическое» как инварианта жанрового смысла культуры. Ритмический рисунок романа является одновременно и важной характеристикой стиля текста и основанием для отбора автором стилистических изобразительных средств. Смысл «поэтическое» прослеживается на всех уровнях организации высказывания и помогает восстанавливать его более частные смыслы. The article discusses the issue of understanding the text based on the reader's restoration of the meaning of «poetic» as an invariant of the genre meaning of culture. The rhythmic pattern of the novel is an essential characteristic of the author's style and, at the same time, the basis for the selection of stylistic pictorial means. Rhythmization can be traced at all levels of the organization of the utterance and helps to restore its more particular meanings.

After China’s recent great success in eliminating absolute poverty, addressing relative income inequality becomes a more important issue. This survey finds that income inequality rapidly increased in the first three decades since 1978 but stabilized and slightly declined in the past decade, consistent with the well-known Kuznets hypothesis. In addition to documenting the trend and patterns over time and across groups and regions, seven sources of income inequality are systematically discussed with an effort to reconcile and extend the existing literature. Furthermore, a negative correlation is documented between income inequality and intergenerational mobility, consistent with the Great Gatsby curve observed in developed countries. The Great Gatsby is a novel that was written in 1925 by Scott Fitzgerald. it represents The American Dream and the desire of achieving it through the protagonist attempts to achieve The American Dream. The protagonist is Jay Gatsby he is a self-made man who belongs to the working class of society, he gained his wealth through the organized crime and illegal business, Jay was charmed by the lifestyle of the rich people and the identity of being one of them. He used his fortune to make incredible parties in his mansion showing his wealth power and to attract Daisy’s attention, the women he loves most. Gatsby represents the American dreamers who belong to the repressed class of society, this young generation who believes in The American Dream and the possibility of achieving it. The American Dream was created by the dominant class of society in order to control the economic system. The falsie fact that this dream was built upon is the social justice, the social equality that gives equal chances to everyone to achieve their desires via hard work without concern about their social background. The American Dream is mainly about either wealth obtaining which was the aspiration of these young working-class people or social ascendency. Gatsby despite his recent gained fortune and new identity as he changed his name from James to Jay Gatsby was not able to be a member of the bourgeoisies; he was rejected due to his social background. Therefore, the social equality concept was denied alongside the hard work and equality of chances in achieving The American Dream was denied by the illegal career of Gatsby.

The paper explores the distinctive features of the study related to the specific representation of the emotion concepts. Several well-known approaches to the analysis of concepts based on the implementation of different research material are highlighted. The paper proposes a comprehensive methodology for the study and analysis of the linguacultural emotion concept of HAPPINESS, its artistic dynamics, based on the principles of integration of various scientific methods. The study enabled us to carry out a multifold description of the analyzed linguistic expression of the concept and to identify the specific features of the concepts in the English artistic discourse as well as in the Ukrainian translations. The complex and systematic approach to the study of an emotional concept is justified to serve as a characteristic feature of this methodology that attempts to identify textual functioning, structural features, emotive and valuable features of the concept. The study demonstrates that the effective use of provided methodology for the study of an artistic concept requires a special algorithm for the application of scientific methods in order to isolate and characterize the verbal expression of the content of the emotion concept. We consider the implementation of general scientific and empirical methods based on the principles of verbalization, objectification and interpretation of the linguacultural emotional concept for a systemic study of the conceptualization features of the concept. The methodology is represented by the example of a complex analysis of the specific features of the key components of the concept HAPPINESS, a verbal embodiment in a Fr. Sc. Fitzgerald’s piece of art ‒ “The Great Gatsby”. The proposed methodology contributed to the identification of 6 dominant conceptual structures in percentage terms and distinctive features of their artistic translation.
