A paradigm shift has altered our world in practically every sphere and it can be attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic. Modern science and technologies have been called upon to redesign various processes in order to cope with this outbreak and the changes it has wrought. Even the world of education has been subject to severe disruption. To deal with the new situation, the students and teachers have been forced to change the way they customarily taught, learnt and interacted. The entire educational framework will have to be transformed from the traditional face-to-face or physical system to the virtual Moodle education system. The entire school system and higher education system in Sri Lanka are now called upon to confront these new challenges if they are to continue the learning and teaching processes. Fortunately, the higher education institutions have managed to find a quick remedy, by moving to online learning to overcome the difficult situation. Although many learning theories have been introduced to evaluate the learning processes in the physical classroom, the Gestalt learning theory is slightly different from the other theories. This is because the Gestalt theorists emphasize the need for whole perception, which can only be achieved by focusing on the entire learning process and making sense of things by thinking of them deeply. The process of thinking involved selecting, organizing, interpreting and creating meaning. This processing method is called ‘insight learning’. Hence, this study is an attempt to assess the feasibility of developing insight learning in virtual learning. The data was collected through Google forms, and the conclusion is based on the more than 700 responses received from undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. The SPSS software was used to record and analyze data using factor analysis and descriptive statistics. The study shows that there are many factors that prove to be obstacles in the way of developing insight learning via an online learning system. Therefore, the study recommends some strategies to overcome these obstacles and adopt the new online learning process in the future.   Received: 31 October 2021 / Accepted: 9 December 2021 / Published: 3 January 2022

This study investigates teachers’ competencies in the implementation of facilities, principles, educators’ roles, and interactions in the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Using explanatory sequential mixed method, it aims to examine whether all those competencies such as learning system tools and resources, technology quality, and workload management are considered throughout the learning process. In total, 102 students from the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers’ Training at Antasari State Islamic University were involved in the survey. Fourteen of them, as well as three lecturers, were then interviewed. The results indicate that despite students’ limited access to the internet, lecturers attempt to provide all students’ facilities. However, in some departments, various learning activities, monitoring, and feedback still need to be improved. The lecturers generally execute the principle of the virtual learning environment. The students mostly believe that lecturers are aware of their roles, and manage their interactions well. In conclusion, the study suggests teachers’ competencies in the virtual learning environment and calls for further studies in this subject.

Recently there has been a great interest invested in maximizing higher education students’ knowledge retention as well as increasing students learning experience using web technologies. Many higher education institutions upgrade their learning facilities by integrating virtual learning system to their education provisions. Educational content management system is now a primary requirement in higher education provisions. However, as for the context of Indonesian higher education, upgrading the learning system may mean a total change of the way classes are delivered. Most of Indonesian higher education teachers are those with minimal exposure of virtual technological use in classrooms. Although these teachers are familiar with the common internet tools especially the electronic mail system and internet social media, they are not yet familiar with managing a content management system. Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) ar-Raniry is one of Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam Negeri (PTKIN) that share similar context. This study was conducted to explore UIN Ar-Raniry teachers’ readiness in delivering blended learning using Virtual Learning Environment. 124 teachers were participating in this research. The index of technological acceptance is relatively high (3.78). However, on the contrary digital technology use related to delivering lecture is relatively low. The use of e-mail and facebook is relatively popular among these teachers. The study found that teachers are interested in using more convenient digital tools in their classes if the university supports the trainings and assigns educational technology consultant to help them establish the virtual class and help with their technical troubles.

The higher education system uses traditional teaching methods in teaching and learning. The emergence of technology encompasses a great challenge for learners, teachers, and the higher education system to attain success in the learning process via the internet. Technology has made numerous changes in the process of teaching and learning. The students and teachers adopted the advent of technology in the progress of learning and teaching respectively. The pandemic situation also necessitated the adoption of the online-based learning system. The higher education system instantly instigated the online learning system into the real-time scenario. The online learning system gave numerous advantages for both the learners and teachers. Though, they faced several challenges in the process of incorporating the new system of teaching and learning. In this paper, the numerous studies and approaches of online learning systems by various researchers are discussed. Mobile-based learning, online learning in the pandemic system, and the challenges of online learning systems are addressed in this paper.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated a rapid shift to online delivery in higher education. This learning and teaching environment is associated with reduced student engagement, a crucial prerequisite of student satisfaction, retention and success. This paper presents a case study that explored student engagement in the synchronous virtual learning environment, during the mandatory move to exclusive online learning in Australian higher education in April to June 2020. Three university instructors used the Teaching and Learning Circles Model to observe a series of their peers' synchronous virtual classrooms, from which they reflected on ways to enhance their own practice. The findings demonstrate how student engagement in these classrooms can be strengthened across the four constructs of Kahu and Nelson’s (2018) engagement conceptual framework: belonging; emotional response; wellbeing and self-efficacy. The case study also reveals limitations of the synchronous virtual environment as a means of supporting student engagement in the online learning and teaching environment, and proposes ways to address them. Against emerging reports of increased mental health issues among isolated university students during the current pandemic, the case study's recommendations to improve student wellbeing and belonging are particularly salient. This article also highlights the usefulness of the Teaching and Learning Circles Model of peer observation as a way to guide its participants' reflections on their own practice, support their collegiality with academic peers and build their confidence and competence in the synchronous virtual learning environment.

Modern scientific and technological changes have enabled online education as an integral part of the education system in the contemporary world. Although online learning system was influential in the pre-Covid 19 periods to a certain extent, it has become an inevitable part of the teaching and learning process of higher education sectors during the Covid-19 era. As the Covid-19 posed enormous challenges on the traditional higher education system, there was a desperate need globally for every government to incorporate online education into their higher education system. However, online education was not given much importance in the Sri Lankan higher education sector before the Covid-19. But, the closure of universities due to Covid-19 had prompted the government of Sri Lanka to promote the online mode of education as an alternative solution to continue higher education activity during a crisis. Thus, online education has presently become an essential component of Sri Lanka's higher education sector. Nevertheless, there are many obstacles and challenges confronting the higher education sectors, particularly in the universities of Sri Lanka to perpetuate online education successfully. Against this backdrop, this study attempts to give an insight into the impact of Covid-19 on the teaching and learning process of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, and the challenges faced by the university in perpetuating online education system during the Covid-19. The findings of the study show that the university encountered several challenges in terms of online delivery, problems related to practical test via online mode, assessment, examination and supervision of the thesis. The study further highlights issues concerning online teaching and learning environment and a lack of online teaching and learning skills among staff and students that were considered critical to the smooth functioning of teaching and learning process of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study argues that the university should focus on a hybrid education system to address the issues of online mode of education confronted by staff and students to make the teaching and learning process more effective.

Information technology has created tremendous chances in higher education across the globe. With the availability and flexibility of learning online, there are increasing competitions between online learning and traditional, face-to-face classroom. These two types of learning both have their pros and cons. From the advantages and disadvantages of online learning, universities have recently changed the way of their teaching through combining online learning and traditional classroom. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate and understand the advancements of the combination of the two types of learning. In this paper, we will introduce the advantages and disadvantages of online learning and the combined learning. We also share our experience on teaching at Flinders University, South Australia through Flinders learning online system. From this knowledge, we will suggest some solutions about building a combined learning system which is suitable for Vietnamese universities.
