It is of special importance to differentiate between the original Albanian language used orally by the Albanian highlanders reciting by heart the articles of the Codex “Kanun” and the Albanian language used by the staff who recorded the highlanders’ reciting, as well as the language used by the editors, who edited the book before it was forwarded for printing. Our study pays special attention to the abilities and capabilities of the recorder of “Kanun”, who was a renowned intellectual. He possessed all round knowledge of jurisprudence in general and the traditional law “Kanun” in particular because he was not only ordained a catholic priest but he was a law graduated as well. At the same time father Gjeçovi was a well known ethnographer, historian and archeologist. Our study aims at analyzing the material (stuff) recorded by father Gjeçovi focusing on some “artificial” out of place elements cropping up in such a material. Such elements are due to the double functioning of him as the recorder of the oral traditional law “Kanun”, but also as an editor of the recorded material. These recorded material of the traditional law is studied by us not simply as something frozen in that moment of time when Gjeçovi recorded them, but also as they evolved up to nowadays trying to shed light upon their “roots” in the framework of the linguistic usage.

Through a critical study of Philip Melanchthon’s 1521–22 lectures on 1 and 2 Corinthians, this essay evaluates his rhetorical method of reading and annotating Scripture. Building on a conventional analogy between ad fontes and sola scriptura, it investigates an equally operative analogy between consuetudo (linguistic usage) and what Melanchthon called the sermo or mos Scripturae, the “speech” or “usage of Scripture.” As a guide to the mos Scripturae, the early Corinthians lectures are an indispensable complement to his contemporary annotations on Romans. They reveal his attempt to integrate Luther’s “theology of the cross” into a theory of learned reading and shed light on the composition of the first systematic theology of the Lutheran faith, the Loci Communes, also published in 1521. Taken together as speeches, Paul’s letters to the Corinthians are unique enunciations of law and gospel, and unique examples of the “discourse of the cross.”

Epidemic encephalitis resembles many of the common infectious diseases in being caused by a virus which no one has seen, or has been able to grow in an artificial medium. Whether it has been possible even to transmit the disease to animals is still a matter of dispute, although the most recent work tends to confirm rather than to discredit the assertions of those who claim to have done so. This work is of the greatest interest, and it is of special importance in that it clarifies some of the difficult clinical problems which the disease presents. In particular, it seems to shed light on the question why the more acute forms of the disease are less often followed by progressive sequelæ than those in which it begins more insidiously.

During the past few decades, developmental biology has become one of the most exciting areas of science. This is largely a result of the rapidly growing knowledge of molecular biology, partly resulting from the achievements of earlier generations of embryologists. One of the men of special importance among the embryologists of the twentieth century was Sven Hörstadius. Most of the content in today's biology textbooks describes results from the post – Watson–Crick era. However, few texts exclude figures and facts from Sven Hörstadius's dissertation of exactly seventy years ago. His experiments on sea urchin larvae shed light on a couple of the most central findings in developmental biology, namely that the uneven distribution of the egg–cell contents gives rise to early embryo cells with shifting qualities, and that communication between these cells has an essential role in the differentiation process. In the same way, his achievements on the neural crest and its impact on head development in vertebrates have been of lasting importance.

The relationships between nutrition and cancer are as broad as they are conflictive because they encompass the wide spectrum of nuances with which they causally interact. Since times past there has been medical concern about malnutrition in cancer patients, but it is undoubtedly since notable progress has been made about therapeutic options for cancer that nutritional aspects have taken on special importance. This is since when more aggressive therapeutic strategies are applied, there is less tolerance to these treatments and greater morbidity from them, in patients with deterioration of their nutritional status. At present, recent advances in the field of neurobiology have shed light on the participation of neurotransmitters in the mechanisms of anorexia. On the other hand, malnutrition in carriers of neoplasms is closely linked to the negative impact of economic variables, quality of life and survival. De Wys et al., more than 2 decades ago, were among the first to draw attention to this issue, reporting that more than 50% of the 3,000 patients included in the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group had marked weight loss. Other studies, such as those by Shils et al., show different degrees of nutritional compromise in patients undergoing major surgery for cancer.

Besides the atomic surface structure, diverging in special cases with respect to the bulk structure, the real structure of a surface Is determined by the step structure. Using the decoration technique /1/ it is possible to image step structures having step heights down to a single lattice plane distance electron-microscopically. For a number of problems the knowledge of the monatomic step structures is important, because numerous problems of surface physics are directly connected with processes taking place at these steps, e.g. crystal growth or evaporation, sorption and nucleatlon as initial stage of overgrowth of thin films. To demonstrate the decoration technique by means of evaporation of heavy metals Fig. 1 from our former investigations shows the monatomic step structure of an evaporated NaCI crystal. of special Importance Is the detection of the movement of steps during the growth or evaporation of a crystal. From the velocity of a step fundamental quantities for the molecular processes can be determined, e.g. the mean free diffusion path of molecules.

The second messenger 3′,5′-cyclic nucleoside adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) plays a key role in signal transduction across prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Cyclic AMP signaling is compartmentalized into microdomains to fulfil specific functions. To define the function of cAMP within these microdomains, signaling needs to be analyzed with spatio-temporal precision. To this end, optogenetic approaches and genetically encoded fluorescent biosensors are particularly well suited. Synthesis and hydrolysis of cAMP can be directly manipulated by photoactivated adenylyl cyclases (PACs) and light-regulated phosphodiesterases (PDEs), respectively. In addition, many biosensors have been designed to spatially and temporarily resolve cAMP dynamics in the cell. This review provides an overview about optogenetic tools and biosensors to shed light on the subcellular organization of cAMP signaling.

Purpose The aim of this study was to develop a tool to gain insight into the daily experiences of new hearing aid users and to shed light on aspects of aided performance that may not be unveiled through standard questionnaires. Method The tool is developed based on clinical observations, patient experiences, expert involvement, and existing validated hearing rehabilitation questionnaires. Results An online tool for collecting data related to hearing aid use was developed. The tool is based on 453 prefabricated sentences representing experiences within 13 categories related to hearing aid use. Conclusions The tool has the potential to reflect a wide range of individual experiences with hearing aid use, including auditory and nonauditory aspects. These experiences may hold important knowledge for both the patient and the professional in the hearing rehabilitation process.
