The influence of tool control in non-linear friction stir welding (FSW) on mechanical properties of joints was investigated. FSW is widely applied to linear joints. It is impossible for five axis FSW machines, however, to keep all the FSW parameters in optimum conditions at non-linear welding. Non-linear FSW joints should be made by compromise with the order of priority for FSW parameters. The tensile test results of butt joints with rectangular change in welding direction on plate plane (L-shaped butt joints) with various welding parameter change. It was found that turn to the retreating side is encouraged when welding direction change. And the method of zero inclination tool angle is effective at non-linear and plane welding.

In this study, experiments were performed to analyze the fracture surface and microstructural behavior of friction stir welded (FSW) AA5082-AA7075butt joints. Three samples at varying speeds and constant feed were prepared to identify optimum tool speed to produce FSW AA5082-AA7075 butt joints having maximum tensile strength and fatigue life. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to analyze microstructure and fracture surfaces. The samples prepared exhibited a considerable difference in their fatigue life and tensile strength. Microstructural analysis showed the refinement of grains present in the stir zone (SZ), also known as the weld nugget, and thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ). The study of the fracture surface showed that the mode of failure was ductile in nature

The use of aluminium alloys continues to grow in many applications to mention a few aerospace, automotive, electronics, electricity, construction and food packaging. With so much demand there is a new interest in welding of dissimilar aluminium alloys. Some of the welding techniques used to join dissimilar aluminium alloys include friction stir welding and TIG welding. The welding of dissimilar alloys affects the mechanical properties negatively due to porosity and cracking during the welding. This then suggests that there should be a process which can be used to improve the dissimilar alloys mechanical properties post its production. Friction stir processing was found to be one of the mechanical techniques that could be used to improve the mechanical properties of the material. This paper reports on the literature on the friction stir welding, TIG welding and friction stir processing techniques published so far, with the aim to identify the gap in the use of friction stir process as a post processing technique of the weld joints.

The results of technological features for friction stir welding of butt joints of sheet blanks with thickness of 3 mm made of casting aluminum V AL8 alloy with wrought magnalium group 1565chN2 and AMg6M alloys are presented. It is established that the time resistance of the joints depends on the location of the welded alloys relative to the direction of tool rotation during friction stir welding. The ultimate strength of welded joints of VAL8 alloy with 1565chN2 and AMg6 alloys in automatic argon-arc welding is 0.82...0.84 of the ultimate tensile strength of VAL8 alloy. The grain size in the stir zone practically does not depend on the initial grain size in the alloys to be joined. The destruction of the joints made of VAL8 + 1565chH2 alloys under cyclic loading has multi-focal character and is initiated from irregularities on the surface of the weld. The discrete nature of the change in the chemical composition of the weld metal along the axis of the weld is revealed. The weld is formed by alternating strips of connected alloys with width of 30...90 microns.
