Subject area Organizational change. Study level/applicability Undergraduate and Masters level management programmes, particularly in management accounting, public sector accounting or organizational change. Case overview This case study reflects organizational changes when Fijian Post and Telecom Company (FPTL) made a transition from a government department to a corporate entity. The focus of this case study is to examine some of the intra-organizational or micro-level changes that took place at the company. While the impetus for change may have originated in the Fiji Government's policies of public sector reform, the objective here is to outline the often slow pace of intra-organizational change within FPTL. Expected learning outcomes FPTL is a sole provider of postal and telecommunication services in Fiji. The organizational actors faced tensions and initially resisted the change to private business routines. However, with wider education and training on the change process, the resistance was reduced. At FPTL, a management team was set up to introduce commercial norms which were subsequently stabilized by the team through the ongoing process of educating employees on the benefits of changes and routinisation of new practices.The learning outcomes are to understand the difficulty of the change process and be aware of some of the resistance that may persist owing to cultural and political circumstance of a specific country. Case overview This teaching case describes the journey undertaken by Yoma Strategic Holdings (YSH) Ltd, a Singapore-listed company that operates predominately in Myanmar, to become a successful and highly profitable conglomerate business empire in Myanmar. The case provides a rich contextual description of how YSH leveraged upon its partnerships and capabilities, especially with its parent and sister companies, to pursue its conglomerate business model. To facilitate the discussion that this teaching case aims to generate among lecturers and students, we have provided a summary of the latest developments in Myanmar since the 2010 general election. This helps to give students an appreciation of the challenges involved in creating a successful business in Myanmar. Case overview Kulim Land Office is the department responsible for the management of the affairs of the land in this area and it focuses on harmony, progress and prosperity management so that they are conducted in an orderly manner, and in accordance with the requirements of regulations and existing laws. Kulim Land Office is a public organization which is managed by the Land Administrator and two assistants of the Land Administrator. There are about 60 staff and they are being led by the Land Administrator Tuan Haji Md. Shuhaimie b. Abd Rahman, AMK, BCK, ASK. Since the Tuan Haji Md. Shuhaimie leadership started in August 2009, the units had experienced many successful achievements and, not surprisingly, have become a benchmark for other departments in the state of Kedah and the whole Malaysia public departments. This case study explains the importance of different leadership style at workplace and ways to avoid criticism. This case study also explains different methods to motivate subordinates to develop effective leader-follower relationship. A method for solving the problem of classifying short-text messages in the form of sentences of customers uttered in talking via the telephone line of organizations is considered. To solve this problem, a classifier was developed, which is based on using a combination of two methods: a description of the subject area in the form of a hierarchy of entities and plausible reasoning based on the case-based reasoning approach, which is actively used in artificial intelligence systems. In solving various problems of artificial intelligence-based analysis of data, these methods have shown a high degree of efficiency, scalability, and independence from data structure. As part of using the case-based reasoning approach in the classifier, it is proposed to modify the TF-IDF (Term Frequency - Inverse Document Frequency) measure of assessing the text content taking into account known information about the distribution of documents by topics. The proposed modification makes it possible to improve the classification quality in comparison with classical measures, since it takes into account the information about the distribution of words not only in a separate document or topic, but in the entire database of cases. Experimental results are presented that confirm the effectiveness of the proposed metric and the developed classifier as applied to classification of customer sentences and providing them with the necessary information depending on the classification result. The developed text classification service prototype is used as part of the voice interaction module with the user in the objective of robotizing the telephone call routing system and making a shift from interaction between the user and system by means of buttons to their interaction through voice.

Case overview This case focuses on Tracoma Holding Berhad Bai Bithaman Ajil Debt Securities (BaIDS) amounting to RM 100 million which was issued by Tracoma Holding Berhad in 2005. It was the first issuance of a sukuk (Islamic debt securities or bond) by the company. The proceeds were used to finance its growth and to repay existing bank borrowings and capital requirements. This case is interesting, as it allows students to study the bai bithaman ajil sukuk structure and issuance process in the Malaysian capital market. It also provides basic financial transaction and credit rating of sukuk which requires analytical skills. Being a debt-based facility, the sukuk was subjected to credit rating evaluation by the MARC, the rating agency appointed by the company. Further downgrading of the sukuk meant it would lead to the worst-case scenario. Some actions needed to be taken to solve this issue; therefore, the CFO suggested an urgent meeting with the sukuk holders. Expected learning outcomes The students should be able to: understand the issuance process and the principle of BBA (bai bithamin ajil) in sukuk structure; understand reason(s) methods of fund raising by firm and the allocations of fund; understand the sukuk default issue; analyze the reasons for sukuk default; understand the importance of debt securities credit ratings; and identify investors' protection in the case of sukuk default. It focusses on getting students to analyse the costs and benefits associated with the foreign entry decision as well as the strategies for foreign entry. Case overview The Exploring International Markets: Unique Quality Heads to Kenya case study provides a chronological report of how Unique Quality, a cereal production company, grew locally up until the point when it considers internationalisation. It details the key considerations the firm makes as it considers its foreign entry decision. Unique Quality is a cereal production company in Ghana, which operates within the agriculture industry. The industry operates at almost all the points along the value chain including coordinating the growing of the cereal until it is harvested, packaged and marketed for sale. The company which started operations in 2013 has made great gains in penetrating the Ghanaian market. Salma, who is currently at the helm of affair at the company, together with the board is considering entering into Kenya. This decision is one that must not be taken lightly and has left Salma in a dilemma. Case overview The COVID 19 pandemic-related restrictions devastated South Africa’s economy in 2020 and although the restrictions were generally less damaging than in 2020, the government had to budget for vaccinations and rebuild the economy. Public service unions had just announced that they were demanding an increase of 4% above inflation for their members and that they were preparing for a strike. They were bitter about the fact that the South African Government had withdrawn from the last year of a three-year wage agreement in February 2020 and their members had not received an increase for the two years. These demands and Finance Minister Mboweni’s response to them had to consider the structural and cyclical impact on the fiscus and economy. Expected learning outcomes The learning outcomes are as follows: understand the general objectives of fiscal policy and stakeholders’ interests; understand the tradeoffs in fiscal policy and the implications of taking a position; and make recommendations based on reasoned judgements about those recommendations. Subject area Organizational diagnosis. The case addresses the issue of an outsider at a senior position in a family-run business. Study level/applicability MBA. Case overview NCR-Delhi is a multi-specialty hospital in Delhi and is essentially a family-run business. Though it had done well in the early years since its inception, it had been plagued by many problems and had undergone many changes in management and processes. An outsider joined it as the Facility Director (FD) two years ago. In these two years, he introduced multi-directional changes. However, he has not been able to achieve a complete turnaround of the hospital. The major issues facing him are financial, operational and personnel-related issues. The hospital is currently in a major financial crisis, which has been causing delays in disbursement of salaries and creating resource crunches in daily operations. Most of the patients are government empanelled patients, and collection of payments from such patients usually takes at least three months. Employee attrition and customer satisfaction are also continuing challenges. Other issues include lack of proper support and interference from top management. The FD has been showing considerable prowess and capability in leading the organization, but has not been able to achieve the desired results owing to the above factors. Expected learning outcomes To understand the frameworks and process of organizational diagnosis; to understand the influence of change initiatives on organizational culture; and to understand the complexity of family business and what happens when an outsider leader joins family business.
