Environmental illiteracy: the perception of teachers and students about the environment of a school in the municipality of Guaraí-TO The term environmental illiteracy emerged at the RIO-92 conference after highlighting the need to implement a sustainable model that determines the relationship of people to environmental problems in order to train citizens committed to social and environmental issues. In this context, the research aimed to analyze environmental illiteracy about the perception of teachers and high school students in the municipality of Guaraí-TO, seeking to identify this possible illiteracy. For the development of this work, resources were used to assist in data collection, allowing a clearer view of this possible illiteracy by teachers and students. Through the use of a questionnaire and observations to describe the characteristics of the interviewees, it was possible to perceive among the teachers a predominantly globalized view, emphasizing the relation between man and nature and among the students anthropocentric vision prevailed, evidencing nature as a source of resources for human survival. It was possible to perceive that the students and professionals of the education know the basic concepts of environment, but do not have a clear and objective notion of its real dimension. With this analysis, it will be possible to draw up strategies and carry out environmental education works that can contribute to this school community being able to easily understand the complexity of the theme and the possible consequences of environmental and sociocultural degradation. Key words: Environmental Perception, Illiteracy, Environment and Environmental Education.

Environmental issues have become a very dangerous to human beings. Human dependence on environmental elements forces humans to adapt into a very limited environmental system. The best way to maintain good relations with the environment is through conservation and preservation of the environment so that it is always sustainable. This starts from the starting point which is education. Various efforts implemented environmental education into the school curriculum system but the environmental problems among school students are still at an unsatisfactory level. Therefore, this study was conducted to identified the level of awareness and practice of environmental education as well as to measure the relationship between awareness and practice of environmental education among secondary school students in Kota Kinabalu. This study uses a questionnaire distributed in ten selected schools with a total of 500 respondents and data analysis was done by descriptive analysis. The results of this study found that there is no significant relationship between environmental awareness and practices on environmental culture among secondary school students in the district of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

To carry out the worldwide environmental protection, ecocritics try to popularize the campaign by examining how current environmental issues are represented in literary works. With ecocirticism as the theoretical support, this paper is to interpret Ernest Hemingway’s Green Hills of Africa, analyze the relationship between characters and nature, and reveal his attitude towards the natural world, by applying the combination of discourse analysis and documentary analysis. While hunting, Hemingway shows concern for environmental degradation, sticks to the hunting principle all the time, and is good at turning trash to treasure. It is not hard to conclude that Ernest Hemingway has developed the awareness of sustainable development. As a distinguished writer, Hemingway is of great importance to modern sustainable development in advocating, popularizing, and fulfilling this concept.

AbstractThis article explores the relationship between international law and the natural environment. We contend that international environmental law and general international law are structured in ways that systemically reinforce ecological harm. Through exploring the cultural milieu from which international environmental law emerged, we argue it produced an impoverished understanding of nature that is incapable of responding adequately to ecological crises. We maintain that environmental issues should not be confined to a disciplinary specialization because humanity's relationship with nature has been central to making international law. Foundational concepts such as sovereignty, development, property, economy, human rights, and so on, have evolved through understanding nature in ways that are unsuited to perceiving or observing ecological limits. International law primarily sees nature as a resource for wealth generation to enable societies to continually develop, and environmental degradation is treated as an economic externality to be managed by special regimes. Through tracing the co-evolution of these assumptions about nature alongside seminal disciplinary concepts, it becomes evident that such understandings are central to shaping international law and that the discipline helps universalize and normalize them. By comprehending more broadly the relationship between nature and international law, it is possible to see beyond law's potential to correct environmental harm and identify the disciplinary role in driving ecological degradation. Venturing beyond the purview of international environmental lawyers, this article considers the role of all international lawyers in augmenting and mitigating ecological crises. It concludes that disciplinary solutions to environmental problems require radical departures from existing disciplinary tenets, necessitating new formulations that encapsulate rich and diverse understandings of nature.

Research on social and environmental accounting (SEA) has mainly concentrated on disclosure of SEA by corporate bodies, where investigations on ones attitude towards SEA are rarely discussed. SEA is a medium that develops relationships between business and society, community and nature. In addition, SEA involves a concept of sustain ability; where natural resources need to be sustained for the needs of future generations (Alhabshi et al., 2003). SEA also tries to recognise the role of accounting in sustainable development and the use of environmental resources. There are arguments that the young generations today are not fully aware of preserving these natural resources as well as handling social and environmental issues wisely. This perhaps link closely to their belief and cultural background. Hence, this paper examines the influence of gender and belief factors on the undergraduate students’ attitude towards SEA. Four dimensions of belief (fixed ability, quick learning, simple knowledge and certain knowledge) proposed by Schommer (2005) were adapted to analyse how belief factors have influence on their attitude towards SEA. An independent sample t-test was used to examine the relationship between gender and students’ attitude towards SEA. Spearmen’s correlation was employed to show the relationship between belief and attitude towards SEA. The results revealed that gender differences did not show influences on their attitude towards SEA. It was found that there is a significant relationship between belief and students’ attitude towards SEA. Students who believe on the importance of SEA tend to report positive attitude towards SEA. Perhaps findings of this study may provide some information on the SEA education and further be incorporated in the syllabus.

The current environmental education and research are scattered in different disciplines of studies, notably science, engineering, management, economics, politics, and law. This leads to some problems, such as the lack of sufficient understanding of other fields, narrow perspectives towards environmental issues and ill-informed decisions of different branches of the government, and the teaching of one field of the environmental studies based on a false, distorted, or outdated understanding of other fields. Restructuring course curriculum, multi-disciplinary research, and recruitment of college graduates from other fields of study are some of the suggestions.

This article discusses the relationship between a consumer lifestyle and the environment. The willingness to adapt to a sustainable lifestyle was tested through a questionnaire among students of Mendel University in Brno, who are theoretically well-informed people. Overall, 417 students answered, i.e., 19% of the respondents. The students generally recognised the need to address environmental issues, and 90.6% intended to change their lifestyle in this direction. Among the barriers, they mentioned in particular lack of time, lack of financial resources, lack of specific information and insufficient conditions. Addressing this issue requires close co-operation in education between governmental and non-governmental organisations in both the public and private sectors. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the situation in that it has drawn attention to the response of local companies to the global problem.

Björk’s collaboration with the director Lars von Trier on the film Dancer in the Dark was marked by well-publicized personal and aesthetic differences. Their work nevertheless shares an intense preoccupation with the nature and quality of sound. Björk’s soundtrack systematically explores the boundaries between music and noise, and the title of von Trier’s film itself presupposes a heightened attention to aural detail. This paper proposes a theoretical context for understanding Björk’s music in the light of her work with von Trier. Whereas Björk’s soundtrack responds to the visual and narrative stimuli of von Trier’s film, the use of sound in her album Vespertine thematicizes more familiar Björk subjects: the relationship between music, landscape and the natural world, and Björk’s own (constructed) sense of Nordic musical identity. By placing Vespertine alongside Björk’s music for Dancer in the Dark, the sense of ‘hyperreality’ that defines both also emerges as a primary characteristic of her work.

AbstractEngaging and exciting students about the environment remains a challenge in contemporary society, even while objective measures show the rapid state of the world's environment declining. To illuminate the integration of drama and environmental education as a means of engaging students in environmental issues, the work of performance companies Evergreen Theatre, Leapfish and Eaton Gorge Theatre Company, the ecological oratorio Plague and the Moonflower, and a school-based trial of play-building were examined through survey data and participant observations. These case studies employed drama in different ways — theatre-in-education, play-building, and large-scale performance event. The four case studies provide quantitative and qualitative evidence for drama-based activities leading to an improvement in knowledge about the environment and understandings about the consequences of one's actions. In observing and participating in these case studies, we reflect that drama is a means of synthesising and presenting scientific research in ways that are creative and multi-layered, and which excite students, helping maintain their attention and facilitating their engagement.
