The article offers a comparative study of Ukrainian and Polish historical narratives understood as elements of national cultures of remembrance. Using a methodology of cultural studies borrowed from the Birmingham school, the scheme of ‘modes of emplotment’ proposed by Hayden White, the basic model of historical narrative developed by Jerzy Topolski, and Franklin Ankersmit’s notion of narrative substance, a discourse analysis of fragments of four books by contemporary Ukrainian and Polish authors (Yaroslav Hrytsak, Oleksandr Paliy, Grzegorz Motyka, Włodzimierz Mędrzecki) relating the same period (Western Ukraine between the World wars) was accomplished. All layers of the historical narrative (the informational, the persuasive, and the deep world-view related one), as well as modes of emplotment adopted by the authors and their positioning in their narratives were analyzed. The comparative study makes it possible to elucidate the relations between each of the four texts and the mainstream national historic narratives of the two countries. It also helps us to understand the reasons why the attempts to create a single non-conflicted vision of the ‘difficult issues’ of pour shared past have failed so far.

One of the main themes of alternative right-wing media is a strong anti-immigrant approach, which has allegedly intensified a radical and polarized world-view throughout Europe and the United States. In this article, by comparing two right-wing news sites, I examine whether commonalities in their reporting can be discerned at a transnational level. The focus is on the US-based Breitbart London and the Finnish-language MV-lehti, both founded in 2014. The comparative study approaches the research data by utilizing the method of discourse narratology to examine the similarities and differences between the two in terms of their ideological parlances. The results show that there are indisputable commonalities, with parlances that seek to undermine liberal democracy as an outspoken opponent to strengthen the homogeneous battlefront. Accordingly, right-wing news sites in Europe adhere to the shared ideology, leaning on a strong confrontation between western and Islamic countries.

AbstractSeeking to understand the radical pessimism of Qoheleth, interpreters have often shied away from examining the social-historical circumstances of Qoheleth's world. Here Qoheleth's thought is set in the context of the sociological milieu of third century BCE Judea. That milieu-which drew forth Qoheleth's skepticism and created an audience for it-can be placed in context and elaborated by paradigms drawn from the discipline of comparative sociology. This paper explores three independent but complementary macro-sociological models (world-system theory, the comparative study of empires, and patterns of change among axial civilizations) to show that Qoheleth's era was marked by extreme disturbances of social resources in the realms of economics, class structure, and culture. In combination, world events and their social repercussions can be seen as having had a profound influence on the development of Qoheleth's essentially negative world view.

Abstract: This research is a comparative literary study that uses Malay and Javanese versions of Mahabarata text sources. The research objects used were the text edition of Pandhawa Gubah (PG) by Sudibjo Z. Hadisutjipto and the text of Cheritera Pandawa Lima (CPL) by Khalid Hussain. The research method used is descriptive-analysis method. In the comparative study used a comparative literary theory proposed by Endraswara (2011). The results of the text comparison reveal the similarities and differences in the image of Bima figures in the Javanese and Malay versions. The equation as a whole is that both texts contain the same heroic storyline and heroic character, Bima. In addition, Indian influence is still evident in the two texts seen from the nuances of Hinduism that exist in both texts. While the difference is seen in the events that accompany Bima's struggle in achieving his victory. Based on these similarities and differences, it can be seen that the authors attempt to represent the concept of metaphysical interactions vertically and horizontally expressed through PG text.
