Hot corrosion is one of the crucial failure modes of Ni-based superalloy components operating at high temperatures, which inevitably affects the subsequent mechanical properties of the alloys. In this research, damaged Inconel 718 alloy components with a pre-made trapezoid groove are repaired using laser additive manufacturing technique, and the change mechanisms of the microstructure and tensile properties of the repaired Inconel 718 alloy due to the hot corrosion in the salt mixture of 87.5 wt.% Na2SO4 + 5 wt.% NaCl + 7.5 wt.% NaNO3 at 650 °C for different durations are investigated. The results show that oxidation and Cr-depletion occur on the repaired components due to the hot corrosion, and the corrosion products are mainly composed of Cr2O3, Fe3O4, and Ni3S2. The tensile strength and elongation of the as-repaired specimens are 736.6 MPa and 12.5%, respectively. After being hot corroded for 50 h, the tensile strength increases to 1022.9 MPa and elongation decreases to 1.7%. However, after being hot corroded for 150 h, both tensile strength and elongation of the repaired specimens drop to 955.8 MPa and 1.2%, respectively. The mechanical performance alteration is highly related to thermal effects instead of the molten salt attack.

Investigation of the selective laser melting (SLM) process, using finite element method, to understand the influences of laser power and scanning speed on the heat flow and melt-pool dimensions is a challenging task. Most of the existing studies are focused on the study of thin layer thickness and comparative study of same materials under different manufacturing conditions. The present work is focused on comparative analysis of thermal cycles and complex melt-pool behavior of a high layer thickness multi-layer laser additive manufacturing (LAM) of pure Titanium (Ti) and Inconel 718. A transient 3D finite-element model is developed to perform a quantitative comparative study on two materials to examine the temperature distribution and disparities in melt-pool behaviours under similar processing conditions. It is observed that the layers are properly melted and sintered for the considered process parameters. The temperature and melt-pool increases as laser power move in the same layer and when new layers are added. The same is observed when the laser power increases, and opposite is observed for increasing scanning speed while keeping other parameters constant. It is also found that Inconel 718 alloy has a higher maximum temperature than Ti material for the same process parameter and hence higher melt-pool dimensions.

In this research, the effects of heat input on tensile properties and microstructure were investigated for super alloy Inconel-718 sheets weld by Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding process. The tensile properties and microstructure of weld joints were evaluated. The experiment was conducted with six different combinations of welding parameters like welding current, voltage and welding speed, which were give in six different welding heat input combinations of welding parameters. The experimental results shows that the welding joints weld with low welding heat input was yield higher tensile properties. From the experimentation it was understand that the tensile properties increases when the welding heat input decrease. Drastic grain coarsening was evidenced when the heat input was increases. For the weld joints experimented in this research it was also observed that amount of laves phase was increased with increase in the welding heat input which is the major fact for noticeable variation in the ultimate tensile strength of the weld joints welded by TIG welding process with different welding heat input.

This study presents a thorough literature review on the powder-bed laser additive manufacturing processes such as selective laser melting (SLM) of Inconel 718 parts. The paper first introduces the general aspects of powder-bed laser additive manufacturing and then discusses the unique characteristics and advantages of SLM. Moreover, the bulk of this study includes extensive discussions of microstructures and mechanical properties, together with the application ranges, of Inconel 718 parts fabricated by SLM.
