We consider polymetallic beams of constant cross-section from sets of hardening and viscoplastic materials with their two-symmetric arrangement in the cross-section. The beams are considered to be subject to explosive loads. For all materials, a rigid-viscoplastic deformation model was used and the classical Kirchhoff deformation hypotheses were adopted. For bimetallic hinged- supported beams, general equations of deformation are obtained and a method for their solution is described. Residual forms of dynamic damage were determined.

Abstract This paper calls attention to a new method of dealing with deflections of beams, the cross sections of which vary by steps. It is shown that the effect of this variation on the shape of the deflection curve can be represented by a properly chosen force system acting on a beam of uniform cross section. There is no approximation involved in this substitution, whereby the original problem is reduced to one of computing deflections of beams of constant cross section.

It is now well over eighty years ago since Barre de Saint-Venant reduced the problem of the beam of constant cross-section under the action of a single transverse load to the search for plane harmonic functions satisfying a certain condition round the boundary of the cross-section. The solutions due to Saint-Venant, which include the rectangular, elliptic and circular cross-sections, are all cases in which the cross-sections have two axes of symmetry at right angles, meeting of necessity in the centroid of the cross-section, and along these axes the single transverse load is resolved. These axes are principal axes, and his solution depends upon this fact. Some less useful solutions exist for the load along one axis of certain beams of such bi-axial symmetry of cross-section, the solutions not yet being known for the load along the perpendicular axis.

The problem of complex bend of multilayered rods based on concrete is considered. It is assumed that the rod of constant cross-section is of arbitrary shape and different brands of concrete are used in the cross-section of the rod layer by layer. The solution is sought by the small parameter method. The case of a complex bend of the rod pinched at both ends is considered as an example of this solution method. The distribution of bending moments and longitudinal forces in the zero and first approximations is determined.

Abstract A theory is presented to explain the nonlinear distribution of bending stresses found in recent tests on a passenger ship with long superstructure and in model tests. The hull and the superstructure are considered as separate beams which are forced to act together by shearing forces and by vertical forces resisting relative displacements of the two beams. The case of constant cross section of the beams is treated, and solutions in qualitative agreement with the tests are obtained for two types of loading.

The steady incompressible irrotational flow past a three-dimensional body of any shape generates no forces. The historic paradox refers only to drag, but lift is also zero, which has been known but not emphasized. The new material concerns a body with a long constant cross section, such as a train. The final results for forces and moments are very simple. With zero angle of attack, we show that the force vectors on the front and rear parts of the body are each (asymptotically) equal to zero, if the pressure is referred to the freestream pressure. The lift and drag coefficients, based on frontal area, vanish proportionally to d / l and ( d / l ) 2 , respectively, where d / l is the diameter-to-length ratio. This applies to any shape of the cross section, and of the ends. With an angle of attack, the nose and tail forces are non-zero but depend only on the angle of attack and the cross section's added mass per unit length. The pitching moment is proportional to the total added mass and the sine of twice the angle of attack. The present results clarify slender-body theory results. The practical consequence is that, for a long body with constant cross section, the shape of the nose or the tail is irrelevant to its own ‘partial’ drag and lift, and to the pitching moment.

Previously we reported that tannic acid is a very effective fixative for proteins including polypeptides. Especially, in the cross section of microtubules, thirteen submits in A-tubule and eleven in B-tubule could be observed very clearly. An elastic fiber could be demonstrated very clearly, as an electron opaque, homogeneous fiber. However, tannic acid did not penetrate into the deep portion of the tissue-block. So we tried Catechin. This shows almost the same chemical natures as that of proteins, as tannic acid. Moreover, we thought that catechin should have two active-reaction sites, one is phenol, and the other is catechole. Catechole site should react with osmium, to make Os- black. Phenol-site should react with peroxidase existing perhydroxide.

The energy distribution in an electron; beam from an electron gun provided with a biased Wehnelt cylinder was measured by a retarding potential analyser. All the measurements were carried out with a beam of small angular divergence (<3xl0-4 rad) to eliminate the apparent increase of energy width as pointed out by Ichinokawa. The cross section of the beam from a gun with a tungsten hairpin cathode varies as shown in Fig.1a with the bias voltage Vg. The central part of the beam was analysed. An example of the integral curve as well as the energy spectrum is shown in Fig.2. The integral width of the spectrum ΔEi varies with Vg as shown in Fig.1b The width ΔEi is smaller than the Maxwellian width near the cut-off. As |Vg| is decreased, ΔEi increases beyond the Maxwellian width, reaches a maximum and then decreases. Note that the cross section of the beam enlarges with decreasing |Vg|.

The work of multilayer glass structures for central and eccentric compression and bending are considered. The substantiation of the chosen research topic is made. The description and features of laminated glass for the structures investigated, their characteristics are presented. The analysis of the results obtained when testing for compression, compression with bending, simple bending of models of columns, beams, samples of laminated glass was made. Overview of the types and nature of destruction of the models are presented, diagrams of material operation are constructed, average values of the resistance of the cross-sections of samples are obtained, the table of destructive loads is generated. The need for development of a set of rules and guidelines for the design of glass structures, including laminated glass, for bearing elements, as well as standards for testing, rules for assessing the strength, stiffness, crack resistance and methods for determining the strength of control samples is emphasized. It is established that the strength properties of glass depend on the type of applied load and vary widely, and significantly lower than the corresponding normative values of the strength of heat-strengthened glass. The effect of the connecting polymeric material and manufacturing technology of laminated glass on the strength of the structure is also shown. The experimental values of the elastic modulus are different in different directions of the cross section and in the direction perpendicular to the glass layers are two times less than along the glass layers.
