Since the early 1960s, an interdisciplinary field of environmental perception has been developed, withal earlier urban researches have focused on how people perceive their urban environment. Our study aims to assess the environmental quality through user’s perception, so to explore the way people perceive the outdoor spaces in Guelma we have conducted a survey questionnaire in three outdoor spaces, Martyr’s square, El Horia public garden, and Bou El mokh square. The assessment is based on a set of scientifically valid assessment criteria and indicators linked to the principles of sustainable development. The results of this study indicate that the outdoor spaces must play several roles in cities dynamics and functioning, depending on the local context and on the neighbourhood. The intensity of use and the frequency of outdoor spaces differs from one place to another, so it is necessary to avoid generic assumptions and to encourage local perceptual assessments.

Abstract: The work is based on a study of knowledge concerning the environment, within the scope of the 1990s ANPUR Meetings, which discussed the emergence of the urban environment as a field of inquiry that constructs and reconstructs myths concerning the sustainability or unsustainability of urban space. To this end, the first section analyses documents which constitute the institutional imprint of the field, followed by a brief recollection of theoretical-conceptual landmarks established in some disciplines. It is suggested that these be deconstructed, so that the urban environment may be understood through a perspective based on a non-instrumental rationality. In the following section, the socio-historical and politico-spatial focuses of three pairs of notions/concepts are discussed: ambient-environment, sustainable development-sustainability and territory-urbanization, in order to arrive at an understanding of urban sustainability. Such focuses guide the central issues that are related to the field: urban environmental quality, instruments of environmental management and the conflict of interests among actors. In conclusion it is shown that, although most of the discourse on the urban environment considers urban space to be unsustainable, there are paths that point to a definition of the field. Keywords: environment; sustainability; urban space.

The role of women in economic development and the global environment is vital for progressing them towards the United Nations sustainable development goal (SDG-5) that emphasized the need to empower women in every walk of life. The study examines women’s autonomy in the sustainable development agenda under China’s open innovation system from 1975 to 2019. The study employed an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, vector autoregressive (VAR) Granger causality, and innovation accounting matrix to estimate parameters. The existing data are summarized and collated in the context of China to explain as a correlational study. The results show that women’s autonomy moderated with technology spills over to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and substantiate the hump-shaped relationship between them. The increased spending on research and development (R&D) activities, patent publications, and renewable energy consumption empowers women to be equipped with the latest sustainable technologies to improve environmental quality. The pollution haven hypothesis verifies a given country, where trade liberalization policies tend to increase polluting industries to set up their plants that engaged in dirty production that exacerbate GHG emissions. The causality estimates confirmed that technological innovations and renewable energy consumption leads to women’s autonomy. In contrast, females’ share in the labor force participation rate leads to an increase in renewable energy consumption. Thus, it is evident that there is a positive role of women in the country’s sustainable development.

During recent decades, education for sustainable development (ESD) has been under the scope of the international community, but research in ESD for early childhood education (ECE) is still scarce. This article proposes a procedural framework for the implementation of teacher professional development opportunities in the area. During the first phase, we undertook a systematic review of peer-reviewed articles on ESD for ECE (n = 30). After an expert committee revision of the articles reviewed, three cornerstones (scientific action-integrated, community-based and value-oriented scopes) and three sets of suitable pedagogical approaches (art-based, outdoor-based and project-problem-based) were identified. The review was enhanced by an unsystematic review of articles (n = 26) that specifically referred to the cornerstones and approaches. Finally, a double-blind expert coding and categorization of the articles (n = 56) was performed in order to validate the results. Focusing on guidelines and approaches, different examples found in the literature are presented. This review offers a useful framework to understand and practice ESD in ECE. Unlike previous reviews, it has a practical scope to foster innovative teacher professional development opportunities, inspire teachers and inform policy makers. We conclude with some common challenges and the needs for educational systems to foster science-based citizenship education towards sustainable development in a practical way, fostering agency from an early stage to transform local context, creating global awareness of the environmental, social and economic challenges of the 21st century.

AbstractPublic transportation and pedestrian movement in cities are key elements for sustainable development. Different cities have opted for the implementation of massive public transport systems to improve mobility and promote sustainable development. Several authors have talked about the importance of pedestrian movement as part of public transport trips. The investigation focuses on increasing the walkability around the stations of metro in Quito in order to promote walking as a function of co-modality for public transport. A methodology is proposed to demonstrate the validity of the selected variables to promote walkability at a point of connection with public transport in an urban environment for the most part consolidated.

<p>High-rise buildings have become an inevitable trend in future building development. Since today’s building theories and technologies have not fully matured, we should perform a comprehensive analysis by combining urban environmental conditions in order to promote sustainable development of high-rise buildings. This study will discuss development prospects and problems of high-rise buildings via the relationship between urban environment and high-rise buildings, in order to form a more comprehensive and mature understanding of future development direction and the focus of high-rise building, and to propose appropriate countermeasures to the negative impacts of high-rise buildings on the development of urban environment.</p>

One major concern that has emerged in the post-globalization period is climate change. Given that pollution and environmental degradation is a public bad, the adverse change in the climate of one region will have ubiquitous effect and therefore will hamper the process of sustainable development across the globe. There are substantial links between international trade and environmental issues – one being that of the perverted comparative advantage which evolves mainly out of the neglect of environmental damage caused by productive activities. In this chapter, an attempt has been made to build a theoretical framework related to intra-industry trade with production differentiation based on the environmental quality of the goods and price to address how liberalization of trade happens to affect the environment of the trading nations. The study shows a steep decline in the environmental quality of the good that was relatively cleaner under autarky while a meagre improvement in the environmental quality of the relatively dirtier good. Hence, it is revealed hereby how trade alters the nature of international inequality in the environmental quality of the productive activities.
