High-rise buildings have become an inevitable trend in future building development. Since today’s building theories and technologies have not fully matured, we should perform a comprehensive analysis by combining urban environmental conditions in order to promote sustainable development of high-rise buildings. This study will discuss development prospects and problems of high-rise buildings via the relationship between urban environment and high-rise buildings, in order to form a more comprehensive and mature understanding of future development direction and the focus of high-rise building, and to propose appropriate countermeasures to the negative impacts of high-rise buildings on the development of urban environment.

The study reveals the aspects that defi ne the concept of “lifestyle”, including the main categories: standard of living, lifestyle, quality of life and lifestyle. Insuffi cient knowledge of the mutual infl uence of people’s “lifestyle” on the typological structure of apartments and residential buildings, on the quality of the urban environment is emphasized. The infl uence of the level of urbanization of the city territory on the characteristics of the “urban lifestyle” is considered. Problematic issues are raised related to the debate on the relationship between building density and comfort and the quality index of the living environment. The main directions of fundamental research in the fi eld of architecture, aimed at the development of new types of buildings, are touched upon. The emphasis is made on the methods of using high-rise buildings for the humanization of the urban environment and the formation of a modern “compact city”.

The urban environment is a networked metabolic organism. The urban environment includes networks that feed it with energy, resources, people, goods and information. The urban environment carries out a permanent transformation of matter, energy and produces waste, which together change the urban environment. We have proposed to use an indicator for assessing the efficiency of the metabolism of the urban environment, which allows to take into account the relationship between the urban structure, energy consumption, emissions of pollutants and the intensity of consumption of natural resources. We use this indicator as a tool for forecasting sustainable urban development. Using the example of Poltava city, we have shown that the indicator for assessing the metabolic efficiency of the urban environment can be used as one of the decision-making tools for the sustainable development of Ukrainian cities. The improvement of existing and development of new indicators is an important task towards the implementation of the concept of sustainable development, which is a logical continuation of the teachings of V. I. Vernadsky on the noosphere.

This paper analyzes the basis of the concept of sustainable development and refers to the optimal level of space use for tourist purposes. In doing so, a special attention is mostly paid to negative impacts of tourism on space, i.e. the necessity of spatial limitation of tourism development in order to preserve and protect natural and created resources. An intensive and uncontrolled development of tourism in the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century caused the degradation of the environment, the destruction of ecosystems and other social and cultural conflicts in the tourist area. For these reasons, it is necessary to align the planning of the future development of tourism with the principles of sustainable development by using different indicators. The main goal of this paper is to analyze various indicators of sustainable development that determine the possibility of using space in tourism, as well as sustainable tourism development. When selecting the indicators of future development, certain criteria must be taken into consideration, such as the criterion of relevance, feasibility (availability), credibility, and so on. The essence of use of the indicators is to determine the optimal number of potential visitors and facilities in the tourist area, without significantly affecting the environment, reducing the quality of tourist experience (sensation) or jeopardizing the sense of identity, lifestyle and activities of the domicile population.

This article summarized seismic design method of high-rise building from seismic fortification goal, use of materials, structural systems, analysis methods and trends. Then it discussed the structural design significance of high-rise buildings to achieve sustainable development. Lightweight quality, high strength material, diversity type, spatial component, braced lateral force resisting system, structuring combination and shock absorption building are the trends of high-rise building development.

Cities are densifying at a rapid rate, and accordingly, are constructing high-rise buildings to accommodate more people. The aim of this study was to quantify the physiological and psychological impacts of being in the presence of high-rise buildings in Central London, in a real and virtual 360-degree video environment. Using a within-subjects design, participants were exposed to a low-rise and high-rise building. While exposed, participants were monitored for electrodermal activity. They were also administered the Self-Assessment Manikin measure and a cognitive appraisal questionnaire. Participants rated the high-rise building environment to be less open, less friendly and rated themselves to feel less happy and have less sense of control, as compared to low-rise buildings. We found these effects in both the real world (n = 16) and a 360-degree video setting (n = 121). These findings suggest that city environments populated with high-rise buildings can have negative impacts on urban dwellers. Furthermore, this study provides a methodology to examine how individuals respond to the built environment and stands to inform urban design and architectural practices.

Abstract The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the wind flow interaction with a high-rise building, considering various types of streamlined flow acceleration, as well as an assessment of the aerodynamic shadow behind the building, and areas with increased wind speeds. The authors analyze risks caused by these zones, as well as suggest measures to minimize them.

The article is devoted to the study of the formation of the architectural identity of the profitable complexes of the turn of the XIX and XX centuries of the Old Tatar Quarter - one of the oldest ethnic districts of Kazan. Profitable buildings and complexes of the studied period constitute a significant part of the preserved development of this territory. The article reveals the little-studied facts of the formation of profitable houses, examines the nature of their functional content, establishes the relationship between the material and non-material components of identity. Comprehensive analysis of the materials revealed the multifunctional nature of the profitable complexes. The level of identity of the complex is determined by the variety of its material and non-material features. A special role in the formation of the identity of the complex was played by the intangible component, which was determined by various factors. The results of the research are important for the restoration of cultural heritage sites and the introduction of little-known and unpublished archival materials into scientific circulation. Determining the identity of the profitable buildings of the Old Tatar Quarter is important for the further sustainable development of the district and for the preservation of the culture of the Tatar people.
