Under the restricted measures due to the global pandemic Covid-19, like all other services, financial services had difficulties in performing their financial activities. These difficulties are stronger at countries where financial services are denied for a long time. Financial services denial is an issue that has affected not only Albania but small Balkan countries as well. The reasons for this denial are many, but among them we can distinguish the lack of credit experience, as one of the common reasons to be excluded in these countries from the development of the financial sector. Currently, one of the reasons for the financial denial is the emergency created by Covid-19, where physical distancing and other measures taken by governments to restrict movement and services make financial service impossible. Thus, one of the most effective ways to perform financial services remotely is financial technology. Financial technology refers to the possibilities of financial innovation through technology that can result in new business models, applications, processes, or products with an effectiveness related to financial markets and institutions and the provision of financial services. This paper aims to present the challenges of the legal framework and regulatory institutions, to provide recommendations for its improvement, to enable the development of financial technology in the financial market in Albania. The paper address issues such as the Bank of Albania's consideration on the Directive (EU) 2015/2366 On Payment Services (PSD II). What benefits or challenges would its implementation bring? How is the financial industry projected after the implementation of PSD II? What are the biggest job challenges with payment institutions that have not been to the market before or that bring technology innovations? The paper addresses the issue of money laundering through online digital transactions as well.

PurposeThe financial industry offers a unique setting to study innovations. Financial innovations have fueled the growth of economies, markets and societies. The financial industry has successfully become the breeding ground for innovative services, processes, business models and technologies. This study seeks to provide a holistic view of the literature on financial innovations, synthesize the research findings and offer future directions for research in light of three market developments that are disrupting the industry and opening up a new era for the financial services industry. Disruptions from within and outside the industry offer new generations of radically innovative services. Moreover, new generations of consumers differ from previous generations in their needs and wants and look for innovative ways to handle their financial needs. Finally, significant developments related to financial innovations have emerged in Asia and developing countries.Design/methodology/approachThis study systematically reviews the academic research literature on financial innovations in two phases. The first phase provides a quantitative review of 546 journal articles published between 1990 and 2018. In the second phase, the study synthesizes the extant research on financial innovations and maps them in five research areas: firms' introduction and adoption of FIs, financial innovation development, the outcomes of financial innovations, regulations and intellectual property, and consumers.FindingsThe analysis found that disciplines differ with regard to the employed research methodologies, the units of analysis, sources of data and the innovations they examined. A positive trend in the number of published articles during this period is observed. However, studies have primarily focused on the USA and Europe and less so on other parts of the world. The literature synthesis further identifies research gaps in the available research that highlight future research opportunities in light of the three market disruptions. The financial services industry is on the brink of a new era due to disruptions from within and outside the industry and the entrance of new generations of consumers. Moreover, the financial industry has successfully become the breeding ground for innovative services, processes and business models. Therefore, financial innovations offer promising opportunities for bridging the gap between research on product and service innovations.Research limitations/implicationsThe work provides a holistic and systematic overview of extant research on financial innovations and highlights future research opportunities in light of the three disruptive market developments. It helps researchers take advantage of the opportunities in studying financial innovations while maintaining industry relevance.Originality/valueThe study is the first to review and synthesize the academic research literature on financial innovations across marketing, finance and innovation disciplines. In addition, the study highlights three primary disruptive forces in the financial industry and identifies future research directions in light of these disruptive forces.

Bank Indonesia created an appropriate regulatory regime to drive the pace of innovation carried out by Financial Technology Providers while still applying the principles of consumer protection, risk management and prudence. One of the efforts made by Bank Indonesia was by issuing provisions concerning a regulatory sandbox for Financial Technology Providers along with their products, services, technology and/or business models in a Board of Governors Member Regulation No 19/14/PADG/2017 on the Limited Technology Testing Room (Regulatory Sandbox) Financial Technology. Meanwhile, the Financial Services Authority also issued regulation regarding the Regulatory Sandbox for Financial Technology Organizers in Financial Services Authority Regulation No. 13 / POJK.02/2018 on the Digital Financial Innovations in the Financial Services Sector. The main point of view to be analysed is the existence of regulatory sandbox approach held by Bank Indonesia and the Financial Services Authority as an effort to encourage the growth of Financial Technology in Indonesia.

This article analyzes the Fintech evolution. After describing the process of this phenomenon, some of the main definitions are provided both nationally and internationally. Finally, six main models of Fintech are analyzed. Through a systematic literature, 14 articles have been selected that deal with the phenomenon of Fintech. Six Fintech business models implemented by the ever growing number of Fintech startups have been identified, payment, wealth management, crowdfunding, loan, capital market and insurance services. Internationally, Fintech has already been defined by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank Group (WBG), the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). On a national level, on the other hand, Fintech has been analyzed by various countries, USA, United Kingdom, Singapore, China, Switzerland, China, Australia and the European Union. Fintech refers to a broad set of innovations - observable in the financial field in a broad sense - which are made possible by the use of new technologies both in the offer of services to end users and in the internal production processes of financial operators as well as in the design of market enterprises, without thereby compromising new possible configurations of intersectoral activities. Fintech appears to be representative of innovative methods - based on technology - of carrying out activities directly or indirectly connected to financial services rather than being a pre-defined industrial sector. Following the logic of the digital economy, Fintech contributes to designing an open and continuous network of modular services for businesses, individuals and banking, financial and insurance intermediaries, becoming a powerful acceleration force for the integration policies of the financial services markets in the EU.

Stable and efficient functioning of financial institutions, especially banking institutions, requires the existence of an adequate regulatory framework. The differences in the character and functioning of financial institutions caused differences in the regulatory approaches for maintaining stability and efficiency, whereby one should bear in mind that even within a concrete financial system, the regulatory framework evolves in order to be able to respond to new trends in the financial services sector. A growing homogenization of activities and a less noticeable difference among financial institutions caused the financial safety net to expand to non-bank financial institutions in order to maintain financial stability. The aim of this paper is to consider the justification and implications of such an expansion. Considering the fact that financial safety net „expansion“ stimulates riskier behaviour of protected institutions, this paper offers suggestions for dealing with this problem in order to reduce it as much as possible.

Banking regulation plays an important role in the process of ensuring financial stability, the national economy, equitable distribution of wealth and the most efficient use of financial resources. As a key regulatory tool, Banking Regulation monitors and monitors financial transactions to improve their profitability and efficiency. The author points out that the main areas of banking regulation and supervision are to control the processes of formation, operation and liquidation of commercial banks. The article focuses on the fact that the 2008 financial crisis has become a motivating driver for reforms in the banking system of Europe and America. The main purpose of the article is to assess the impact of changes in the European Banking System, in particular in the context of the study of the features of the Financial Markets Directive, on the functioning of the global economy. This paper provides a critical review of the literature from the point of view of analyzing the specificity of MiFID II in the context of its impact on the economic aspects of the country’s development. The implementation of the Directive requires significant financial investment, but these costs will pay off given the fact that MiFID II is well-designed and aimed at providing more secure protection and greater customer base stability. However, the author points out the underdevelopment and inconsistency of the regulatory framework, which is of greater concern than the cost of implementing MiFID II. Thus, the idea of the likelihood of financial and economic problems in the process of influence of banking regulation on the development of the global economy is substantiated. Notwithstanding these shortcomings, the regulatory framework for the formulation and implementation of the Directive is a significant contribution to the regulation of the financial sector. The results of the study represent scientific and practical value for academics, politicians, banking financial management of economic entities, stakeholders to better prepare and evaluate future changes as a result of reforming banking regulation. Keywords: Directives, Economic growth, Financial crisis, MiFID, Regulation.

The article summarizes the theoretical foundations and defines the role of banking innovations in the system of ensuring the competitiveness of banks. It has been found that in recent years there has been a trend in the banking sector, which indicates that the traditional business model of the bank, based on a regionally branched network of branches, is becoming increasingly inefficient, as rising costs are not supported by rising efficiency. It is noted that banks are sensitive to the process of economic instability, which manifests itself as a loss of financial stability, reduction and deterioration of customer base due to falling solvency, on the one hand, and loss of confidence - on the other, which collectively affects financial performance and competitiveness . It is outlined that in such circumstances banks face an important task of forming a strategy to increase competitiveness, which will ensure not only maintaining but also strengthening market positions through a clear understanding of the structure and dynamics of the financial services market in general and its banking segment in particular. The study emphasizes that innovation as a field of activity, and hence banking innovation in particular, is actively developing. The relevance of new implementations and ideas, especially those already used by foreign banking institutions, and still little known in our country, as opportunities to ensure a high level of bank competitiveness, has been studied. Accordingly, the study highlights the exceptional role of bank investment in the system of ensuring the competitiveness of the bank. Therefore, further research in this direction is important, because the introduction of banking innovations is a very dynamic process. In addition, not all innovative solutions become widespread, and successful banking innovative solutions in some countries may go unnoticed in others.
