This chapter discusses O. O. Gruzenberg's Yesterday: Memoirs of a Russian-Jewish Lawyer (1981). This book is a nostalgic reminiscence of selected episodes from the life of Oskar Gruzenberg (1866–1940), a noted Russian-Jewish attorney whose courtroom successes in a wide range of political trials during the last two decades of the tsarist regime culminated in his brilliant defence of Mendel Beiliss in the notorious 1913 ritual murder trial in Kiev. Gruzenberg recounts scenes of his youth and of legal dramas in which he was a participant. He also describes some of the well-known writers he knew and relates several successful interventions with Russian bureaucrats during World War I in order to avert miscarriages of justice. Gruzenberg comes across in these memoirs as a skilful lawyer, eloquent advocate, humanitarian liberal, and passionate lover of the Russian language and literature.

The period of last quarter of the XIX – beginning of the XX century in France after the World War I receives a name “Belle Epoque”. It is the time of development of entertainment industry, origination of mass culture, where women play a special role. The object of this research is the life strategies of women of the bohemian circles of Paris of “Belle Epoque”. The subjects is the women in French theatricality of the late XIX – early XX century. The goal of the work consists in determining the role played by thre women with a new female life strategy in formation of the phenomenon of French theatricality of “Belle Epoque”. Methodology is based on the sociocultural approach towards the problem, and suggests detailed analysis of the rare memoires of the performers, actresses and dancers, which were not published in Russian or translated into the Russian language. It is noted that women in the bohemian circles reconsidered their strategies in achieving life goals, putting the questions of career and personal growth to the forefront. They also were able to respond to the desires of audience of the late XIX – early XX century, attracting attention to the art of dance, pantomime, theatre, bringing their personal outlook upon the manner of performing. Women performed equal to men, often superseding them in some fields of art due to their natural femininity and talent.

The measures to improve the situation of Jewish refugees in Western Siberia in the conditions of social and political cataclysms of the beginning of the XX century are discussed in the article. It is noted that legislative documents clearly regulated issues related to the migration of Jews, so not all settlements in Siberia were available for their residence. It is emphasized that due to a number of factors, including the economic plan, forced migrants preferred to settle in Western Siberia. It is indicated that, in addition to state authorities, support for arriving refugees was provided by local Jewish communities: a branch of the Petrograd society, the Jewish Committee for Assistance to War Victims (JCAWV), was opened in the Tomsk province; there was a branch under the auspices of JCAWV in Mariinsk, Novonikolaevsk and Kainsk; in Omsk, the All-Russian Union of Cities supported the creation of national committees. Based on the involvement of a wide range of sources, the following areas of activity of Jewish organizations in helping co-religionists were characterized: providing housing, teaching the Russian language, employment, medical support, etc. It is concluded that for a number of reasons, not all of the tasks assigned to organizations were implemented, primarily due to the lack of stable sources of funding.

This paper considers the formation of Russian studies at the Victoria University of Manchester and the participation of A.S. Mindel, a representative of Russia abroad, in it. Teaching the Russian language at the Victoria University of Manchester started in 1907 in the wake of interest in the events in Russia (the war with Japan, the revolution). However, the exotic and difficult language lessons taught by the teacher of English W.J. Sedgefield quickly began to fall out of the public’s favor. Another “Russian boom” in Great Britain occurred during the World War I, when the two countries became allies in the fight against Germany. Due to the increasing interest in Russia in that period, A.S. Mindel, a clerk of the commercial firm, was in demand as a teacher of the Russian language. In addition to teaching, A.S. Mindel gave lectures on Russia, mainly on economic topics, because the Manchester business community, which financially supported the development of Russian studies at the university, was willing to forge contacts with Russia. The pinnacle of A.S. Mindel’s achievements as a teacher was the preparation and publication of a reference book on Russian commercial correspondence (1918). The funds collected by the university authorities in conjunction with the business community of Manchester made it possible to organize a chair of the Russian language, a post for which A.S. Mindel, with his level of education, could not apply. He was not involved in the subsequent development of Russian studies in Manchester.

Аннотация. В статье рассматривается вопрос о функционировании русского языка в образовательном пространстве КГМА. Большое место в работе занимает роль русского языка в учебной деятельности студентов-медиков. Мотивацией к изучению именно, русского языка являются следующие факторы: статус официального языка; возможность привлечь внимание широкого круга специалистов к своим исследованиям; понимание престижности русского языка. В статье нашли отражение различные формы работы по расширению сферы использования русского языка в медицинской академии. В работе уделено внимание и профильным учебным пособиям, разработанным автором статьи. Анализ некоторых заданий позволяет констатировать тот факт, что содержание пособии определено через компетенции, одной из которых является языковая. Ключевые слова:язык обучения, фундаментальные науки, соматические ФЕ, компетентностная основа, профессиональная направленность, жаргонная лексика. Аннотация. The article discusses the Russian language functioning in the of the KSMA’s educational space. Russian language plays a big role in the educational activity of the medical students. The main motivation of learning the Russian language has the following points: the status of the official language; the opportunity to attract the attention of a wide range of specialists to their research; understanding of the prestige of the Russian language. The article reflected various forms of work to expand the scope of the use of the Russian language at the medical academy. The work focuses on specialized textbooks developed by the author of the article. An analysis of some tasks allows us to state the fact that the content of the manual is determined through competencies, one of which is the language. Key words: teaching language, fundamental sciences, somatic phraseological unit, slang vocabulary.

Review on «Dictionary of response remarks in Russian dialogical speech» by V. T. Bondarenko. The dictionary is based on a concept that is developed from the idea of dialogism of human consciousness. The object of study is response remarks, i.e. words and phraseological units whose illocutionary purpose is to respond to a word or phrase of another participant of the dialogue. They are characterized by stability in language and reproducibility in speech. Responses are defined as performative signs: they are used to express the psychological state (reaction) of the speaker, caused by an initiative phrase or ”hook”-word. The paper describes macro- and microstructure of the dictionary, characterizes the semantic and syntactic aspects of the response remarks, and enumerates their functions. The author of the review shows a number of ways to use the dictionary. Responses are linked to typical situations and everyday situations of communication (meeting, acquaintance, addressing, attracting attention, etc.), to conversation topics, and therefore, are of interest to researchers dealing with genres of oral speech. Since the responses are connected with the stereotypes of thinking, behavior and mental reactions of Russians, their research is important for ethnolinguists. The dictionary data can enrich linguistic and cultural studies of cultural concepts. Due to the playful (humorous) function inherent to responses, they may be of interest when studying the essence of the comic. The dictionary materials give a systematic idea of the expression of the comic in the Russian language. The open evaluability of response remarks makes them a unique research material for studying the categories of axiology, evaluability, and textual modality. The analysis of the context of responses, the system of marks and illustrations is valuable for researchers of speech culture and speech etiquette. It will be fruitful for psycholinguists developing a theory of reactivity. The dictionary has a wide range of response variations, so it is of great importance for phraseologists who study the variation of set phrases. Studying the response remarks will be useful to researchers of children’s speech as vocabulary, syntax, rhythm of response replicas, and images in them are organical for the child’s perception and can be easily reproduced. For gender studies of language, the research of these units is important because they allow you to get information about gender characteristics, and marks and illustrations – to compare the tactics of speech behavior of men and women. The dictionary has a great educational value for any person, because thanks to the non-standard and unusual material of the dictionary, everyone can enrich their speech.

This article examines the activities of the Newark Public Library during World War I as a means of highlighting the significant role American libraries played in promoting the nation’s war effort. During the war public libraries were usually the most important information centers in their communities. They distributed books, pamphlets, and posters in support of a wide range of government initiatives, they organized war-related exhibits and classes, and they collected vast amounts of reading material for libraries at military camps. Newark’s chief librarians, John Cotton Dana and Beatrice Winser, oversaw many such patriotic initiatives, but they also became involved in more controversial campaigns to employ women librarians at military camps and to resist wartime calls for censorship of unpatriotic literature.

This chapter discusses the life and work of Ernst Jünger, who was part of a strain in modern German conservatism that tested the limits of modernity and Enlightenment rationality. He catapulted to fame as a young man on the basis of his World War I memoirs, In Storms of Steel, which made him part of the antidemocratic forces of the Weimar Republic, but he retreated into the inner emigration during the Third Reich. After 1950 he lived a reclusive life but published a stream of essays and books and an impressive diary that chronicled almost four decades of life with sharp observations on a wide range of topics. He was a cultural pessimist who thought that the rise of a unifying planetary technology and the loss of local culture meant that we were entering into a posthistorical world of fragmentation, and new forms of cultural and political tyranny.
