This chapter highlights retrospective accounts and contemporary sources that attest to and lament the phenomenon of the abandonment of tradition due to the inroads of secular ideologies. It recounts Ben-Zion Gold’s encounter with newer religious institutions and initiatives that contributed to him remaining traditional. It also looks at contemporary sources that noted the pain of parents confronted with open flouting of religious norms within the four walls of their own homes. The chapter analyzes interminable debates on the shtetl or the Jewish market town in the face of modernity encroaching upon its traditional lifestyle. It talks about the perception of the shtetl’s imminent disappearance that led one writer to compose a ’travelogue’ of a visit to a typical shtetl so that future generations might know how Jews lived once upon a time.

Simple observation of events for the disaster in Indonesia is almost always showed the same picture is a condition in which reactive attitude and spontaneous, unplanned as shown by society and government. There is a general tendency that people do not know how to act or addressing disaster. Regional preparedness in the face of natural disasters is very important. Slamet mountain with an altitude of 3,428 meters above sea level is the highest mountain in Central Java and the second highest in Java. Population data in the area of Mount Slamet and surrounding areas are included in Kawasan Rawan Bencana (disaster-prone areas) is approximately 215 953 inhabitants. Seeing the extent of the area affected by the eruption of Mount Slamet threats can not be taken lightly. This study aimed to explore the networking model for effective disaster risk reduction in disaster-prone areas of Mount Slamet. Networking model for disaster risk reduction is a very important information in order to overcome the impact of the eruption of Mount Slamet.

Ecology shows us not only environmental problems; it shows that we need a new balance and harmony between individuals, beings, communities and all of Nature. We need a new contract with Nature (SERRES, 1991) and new Ethics (GUATTARI, 1990) for our lives. What is therefore new in Architecture? The environmental ethics have given us a universal and supra-generational vision of the management of our Nature and, as a consequence, a new way to construct our “second” nature. What is essential for this new architecture that the new ethics demand? Exploring this subject, the paper firstly analyzes how the relationship between ethics and architecture has been described by other authors. Secondly, how the relationship between mainstream architecture and ecology is evolving, from technical matters to social and more complex issues, to work towards ethics. Finally, the convergence between them (Ethics, Architecture and Nature) could provide the clues to understand the ends and means of eco-architecture. As a result of this analysis, we interpret that there are underlying keys in the post-eco-architecture. These summarize in new roles for the “locus” and the break of habitual limits of architecture, which have been replaced for new ones. There are no limits of scale: macro-structures such as mega-cities, as well as micro-organism are involved in the architectural process. The client of our construction is universal: we do not build only for our client, we must think about all beings, including animals since we know how our decisions may inflict damage to biodiversity. The site has no boundaries: we know how any local actions can have an effect in remote locations of the planet, since natural phenomena are interconnected. There is also no time limit: we must build now, but we must think about future generations.

This chapter shows how Russian conservativism in the reign of Alexander I was multifaceted, often in opposition to state policy, and far from united. But there was a common core among its various strands. Men such as Aleksandr Shishkov, Fyodor Rostopchin, Sergei Glinka, Aleksandr Sturdza, and Nikolai Karamzin fused reason and faith to support a form of enlightened autocracy unlimited by law but firmly bound by morality. They also shared a concern with creating a modern Russian culture and a strong state that would be able to unite the country and provide stability in the face of internal and external pressures. In these ways they set the tone for Russian conservatives of future generations.

This chapter evaluates uncertainty and why people feel the need to fill the ignorance gap. The tendency to want to know why things are as they are and figuring out what caused what often leads people to incorrect or even dangerous scientific conclusions. The chapter argues that it is highly adaptive to know how to attribute causality but that people are often too quick to do so. This is another instance in which adaptive, evolutionary qualities have done people a disservice in the face of complex debates and rational thinking. In particular, people have a difficult time sitting with uncertainty and an especially hard time accepting coincidence. The chapter then considers the evidence from decades of psychological research showing people’s misunderstanding of cause and effect and the elaborate coping mechanisms they have developed as a result. It also suggests some ways to help people better comprehend true causality, without diminishing their ability to attribute cause when it is in fact appropriate.

This chapter demonstrates how and why a shift in the balance between civic and religious elements of a civil religion can take place, using Russia as an illuminating case study. Post-Soviet Russia is used to demonstrate how religion can be utilized to reinforce national identity and the legitimacy of the political system in the face of their civic weaknesses. The chapter demonstrates how, eventually, the civic-democratic political model officially designated during Yeltsin's presidency gradually changed to a more religiously grounded one, albeit a model that is not fully recognized, during Putin's rule. Moreover, the Russian case allows us to differentiate between two possible levels of civil religion: an official and openly communicated secularism, and an established church religion, promoted by the establishment in more subtle but not necessarily less aggressive ways. It further shows that just as the state has to adopt religious features in order to be deified, religious institutions have themselves to become more secular to be suitable for adoption as the state's civil religion.

La conciencia actual de que estamos haciendo inhabitable la “casa común” para las futuras generaciones, tiene raíces objetivas y subjetivas. Subjetivamente el hombre de la calle percibe con angustia la destrucción de algo que ya no conoce y que no sabe cómo cuidar. La modernidad, con su división entre la res extensa y la res cogitans, condujo a una disociación entre la idea de naturaleza que tiene el hombre común, y la idea docta de naturaleza. Las ontologías doctas de corte materialista o idealista hacen depender la naturaleza de la subjetividad humana, mientras que la experiencia espontánea reconoce en ella una existencia “dada”. Se proponen tres sentidos de “lo dado” que permiten hacerse cargo filosóficamente de la experiencia común. Nos parece imperativo recuperar una concepción realista de la naturaleza que permita establecer límites objetivos a la técnica y a su lógica, que tiende hoy a invadir, todo el ámbito de lo práctico, incluidas la economía y la política. ---------- The current awareness that we are making uninhabitable our “common house” for the future generations has both objective and subjective roots. Subjectively, the common man anxiously perceives the destruction of something that no longer understands and who does not know how to care. With its division among res extensa and res cogitans, modernity leads to dissociation between the common idea of nature and the academic one. The erudite materialistic or idealistic ontologies make depend “nature” from human subjectivity, while, on the contrary, with spontaneous experience we should recognize to it a “given” existence. We suggest here three meanings of the term “given” that allow us to face in a philosophical sense our common experience. It seems necessary to recover a realistic conception of nature that aims to establish objective limits to technique and its logic, which now tends to invade the entire “practical field”, including economics and politics.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with increased uncertainty, fear and worry in everyone's life. The effect of changes in daily life has been studied widely, but we do not know how emotion-regulation strategies influence adaptation to a new situation to help them overcome worry in the face of uncertainty. Here, 1,064 self-selected Farsi speaking participants completed an online battery of questionnaires that measured fear of virus and illness, worry, intolerance of uncertainty, and emotion regulation (two subscales: reappraisal, suppression). We also documented the number of daily COVID-19 cases and deaths due to COVID-19 on the day in which participants completed the questionnaire. Our findings suggest a correlation between contamination fear and the number of daily-confirmed cases (r = 0.11), and the number of reported deaths due to COVID-19 (r = 0.09). Worry mediated the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and fear of virus and illness (b = 0.16, 0.1141 < CI < 0.2113). In addition, suppression moderated the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and worry (p < 0.01). Our results suggest that suppression (at least in the short term) can be an adaptive response to the worry associated with uncertainty. Suppression can reduce worry, which in turn can decrease fear of contamination and improve adaptation to social distancing requirements. Although, the observed correlations were significant, but considering the sample size, they are not strong, and they should be interpreted cautiously.

The aim of this article is to analyse the impact of COVID-19 on the income models of the Spanish general inter­est press through an in-depth analysis of the case of ‘El Mundo’. This article shows data about the decline in adver­tising, both in printed and digital for­mats, during the first quarter of 2020 and, more specifically, during March. It also reveals that the media platforms with a previously implemented sub­scription system have gained a signif­icant number of new registrations. Not only is ‘El Mundo’ an example of this trend, but also other newspapers such as ‘Eldiario.es’, ‘Ara’, ‘La Razón’ or ‘La Voz de Galicia’. The reader becomes an alternative to lessen advertising losses at a time of global transformation of the industry towards reader-revenue models. Long-term consequences of a probable economic recession once the pandemic effects are reduced are also considered in the analysis. The article also outlines some key points to ensure the viability of newspaper publishers, such as investing in journalists with relevant sources or profiles that know how to manage new digital businesses. Abstract The theme of this research on adaptation strategies angkringan traders to exist in the face of the dynamics of life in the surrounding area of Jl. K.H. Ali Maksum Krapyak, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Researchers want to know how the strategy or the efforts made by angkringan traders in order to maintain his existence and how social capital, which in turn play a role in these efforts. The strategy can be formulated as an effort to maintain his existence as a angkringan’s trader around Jl. K.H. Ali Maksum Krapyak, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The method used in this research using descriptive qualitative method. In this study, there are two classifi cations of traders who hung (trade) around the area of Jl. K.H. Ali Maksum Krapyak, Bantul, Yogyakarta, which is used as one of the objects of informants, namely traders patterned angkringan traditional and modern. Through the narrative they can know how the efforts and strategies undertaken to maintain his existence in the face of the dynamics of life in the surrounding area of Jl. K.H. Ali Maksum Krapyak, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The strategy is one of them is to increase infrastructure facilities in Angkringan, such as a more representative (wider), Television, snacks are varied, not only the main menu as in angkringan others. In this study found the factors underlying the existence of traders angkringan and efforts are being made to defend themselves in the face of the local economy.
