The aim of this work is to present the design of a more environmental friendly aircraft that complies with existent and future emission regulations. Recent Market Outlooks were examined and a single engine piston prop was selected as a case study. Matching Charts were used to estimate the hybridization degree, meaning the ratio between the power provided by the electric motors and the total amount of power. This method allowed the over-boost advantage to be highlighted and pointed out secondary benefits of a hybrid Piston Prop. Furthermore, the zero-emission taxi possibility was evaluated. Both fuel savings forecast and safety analysis were performed, showing secondary advantages of a high hybridization degree for a single engine Piston Prop configuration. Furthermore, the additional weight related to electric motors and storage system is taken into account and state-of-the-art and innovative under-development technologies are considered. Thus, the conceptual design phase will produce many possible architectures; therefore, the last part of the work consists of a trade study necessary to select the optimal solution to design an innovative hybrid Piston Prop aircraft.

An optimization model for the complementary operation of a photovoltaic-wind-pumped storage system is built to make full use of solar and wind energy. Apart from ensuring the maximum economic benefit which is normally used as the only objective, the stable objectives of minimizing the output fluctuation and variation of load and output difference are added to form the multiobjective problems because of lack of study on access capacity of photovoltaic and wind power. The model aims to increase the power benefit and reduce the output fluctuation and variation of load and output difference under the constraints of station, output balance, and transmission limitation. In a case study, four schemes including single-objective independent operation, single-objective complementary operation, and multiobjective complementary operation are compared to discuss the effect of pumped storage station on economic objective and stable objectives. Furthermore, the opposite trend of the two objectives is proved and a compromise optimal solution is given. The results indicate that the pumped storage station can effectively increase power benefit and access capacity of photovoltaic and wind power. The study can provide references to the complementary optimization of the pumped storage station and the intermittent renewable energy.

Electricity is major requirement for each individual or group to live a prosper and good life, while unfortunately in Pakistan still there are some areas which does not have provision towards this facility. The microgrid is designed to power up those rural areas of Pakistan which does not have provision of electricity via conventional means. To achieve this feat this paper presents a case study of a Thar community or small village located in Thar, Sindh, Pakistan. The small village comprises of 40 houses, some shops and a primary school. The study area having latitude and longitude of 240 52.7’ N and 700 14.4’ E respectively. The microgid consists of a Diesel Generator, Photo voltaic solar panels, Batteries and Flywheel systems. The purpose is to find the most optimal solution using different parameters via Homer optimization software.

In electric vehicles with multiple motors, the torque at each wheel can be controlled independently, offering significant opportunities for enhancing vehicle dynamics behaviour and system efficiency. This paper investigates energy efficient torque distribution strategies for improving the operational efficiency of electric vehicles with multiple motors. The proposed strategies are based on the minimisation of power losses, considering the powertrain efficiency characteristics, and are easily implementable in real-time. A longitudinal dynamics vehicle model is developed in Simulink/Simscape environment, including energy models for the electrical machines, the converter, and the energy storage system. The energy efficient torque distribution strategies are compared with simple distribution schemes under different standardised driving cycles. The effect of the different strategies on the powertrain elements, such as the electric machine and the energy storage system, are analysed. Simulation results show that the optimal torque distribution strategies provide a reduction in energy consumption of up to 5.5% for the case-study vehicle compared to simple distribution strategies, also benefiting the battery state of charge.

Recent attention to industrial peak shaving applications sparked an increased interest in battery energy storage. Batteries provide a fast and high power capability, making them an ideal solution for this task. This work proposes a general framework for sizing of battery energy storage system (BESS) in peak shaving applications. A cost-optimal sizing of the battery and power electronics is derived using linear programming based on local demand and billing scheme. A case study conducted with real-world industrial profiles shows the applicability of the approach as well as the return on investment dependence on the load profile. At the same time, the power flow optimization reveals the best storage operation patterns considering a trade-off between energy purchase, peak-power tariff, and battery aging. This underlines the need for a general mathematical optimization approach to efficiently tackle the challenge of peak shaving using an energy storage system. The case study also compares the applicability of yearly and monthly billing schemes, where the highest load of the year/month is the base for the price per kW. The results demonstrate that batteries in peak shaving applications can shorten the payback period when used for large industrial loads. They also show the impacts of peak shaving variation on the return of investment and battery aging of the system.

Microgrids are among the promising green transition technologies that will provide enormous benefits to the seaports to manage major concerns over energy crises, environmental challenges, and economic issues. However, creating a good design for the seaport microgrid is a challenging task, considering different objectives, constraints, and uncertainties involved. To ensure the optimal operation of the system, determining the right microgrid configuration and component size at minimum cost is a vital decision at the design stage. This paper aims to design a hybrid system for a seaport microgrid with optimally sized components. The selected case study is the Port of Aalborg, Denmark. The proposed grid-connected structure consists of renewable energy sources (photovoltaic system and wind turbines), an energy storage system, and cold ironing facilities. The seaport architecture is then optimized by utilizing HOMER to meet the maximum load demand by considering important parameters such as solar global horizontal irradiance, temperature, and wind resources. Finally, the best configuration is analyzed in terms of economic feasibility, energy reliability, and environmental impacts.

Location and routing are the main critical problems investigated in a logistic. Location-Routing Problem (LRP) involves determining the location of facilities and vehicle routes to supply customer's demands. Determination of depots as distribution centers is one of the problems in LRP.  In LRP, carbon emissions need to be considered because these problems cause global warming and climate change. In this paper, a new mathematical model for LRP considering CO2 emissions minimization is proposed. This study developed a new  Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP)  model for LRP with time windows and considered the environmental impacts.  Finally, a case study was conducted in the province of Central Java, Indonesia. In this case study, there are three depot candidates. The study results indicated that using this method in existing conditions and constraints provides a more optimal solution than the company's actual route. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out in this case study.

In the urban context, buildings play a key role as they are energy consumers. In well-established cities with a high percentage of aged building stock, the focus should lie on sensitive urban areas where the weakest population sectors and the worst physico-economic conditions are usually encountered. In this work, the energy refurbishment of social housing is proposed. A block of municipally owned buildings is selected as a case study to consider that public buildings play an exemplary role according to Directive 2012/27/EU. The group is formed by 12 buildings, which account for 120 dwellings.This study is grounded on two levels. First the urban level. The building is located in a prioritised urban Area of Rehabilitation, Renovation and Urban Regeneration (ARRU), according to the new local Land Plan. This area presents multidimensional vulnerability and considers urban, building, socio-demographic and socio-economic features. Second, the building presents very low energy performance. It was built in 1959 when a high demand of dwellings and the economic resources then available led to low-quality buildings that are far from meeting today’s standards.Some proposals are made, having in mind the specific features of the urban context. The energy refurbishment of the building is proposed, selecting the optimal solution, considering technical, environmental and economic criteria. The energy performance simulation shows a remarkable improvement of the energy performance, resulting in an improvement of the thermal comfort of the dwellers. Besides, a reduction in the energy consumption is reached, which would reduce the energy bills and, on the other hand, a reduction of the carbon emissions to the atmosphere, contributing to a better environment quality. Having in mind that the building is intended for social housing, energy poverty situations could be avoided, as dwellings are inhabited by low-income dwellers.
