Under the conditions of population ageing, particular interest is paid to the study of life satisfaction in older ages. The purpose of the article is to assess the level of life satisfaction of the population in old age. The main method is econometric modelling using individual data from the Study of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). According to the results of the study, ageing itself does not necessarily worsen one’s perception of life - there is no evidence from Austria and Spain that all people systematically, regardless of the year of birth, go through a stage of a lower level of life satisfaction. An important factor of life satisfaction is health self-assessment.

Background: Depression is an emerging mental health condition and elderly population of the world is often affected by it. In the elderly, it often goes unnoticed and often burdens them. Methods: Two groups of population one from an old age home and the other from a community were selected. Data was collected using a Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and a demographic form. The data was compiled and analyzed using Google Spreadsheets. Results: Depression rates were found in both, the old age home and the community. The rates were found higher in the old age home than the community. The demographic factors chronic illness, gender, educational status and marital status were found to be associated with depression. Conclusions: As depression in elderly is a fairly common phenomenon, it should be paid more attention. The elderly should receive intervention for the disease and be able to sustain it.

The aim of this research were to explain the demographic transition and the population ageing in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). This study used previous demographic and profiles of the elderly data in DIY. These data collected from the Central Bureau of Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and other relevant institutions, and then analyzed by descriptive analysis. The results showed The Special Region of Yogyakarta’s demographic transition is in its final stages. This is due to the population ageing in this region; which indicated by high percentage of elderly population. Population ageing in DIY has been happening since 1990. In 1990, the percentage of the elderly population was 11, 3% and became 14, 37% in 2019.

Population ageing is currently a phenomenon not only in developed countries but also in third world countries. In this paper the features of a population's ageing and the process of epidemiological transition are discussed along with the worldwide changes in age-structure. Population statistics in Brazil and the characteristics of the elderly population are presented and analysed in the light of recent changes. The Brazilian elderly population is also discussed, particularly the issues relating to the social cost of the aged population, its urban and rural distribution, the elderly by sex, marital status and level of schooling, and emphasis is given to the imbalance of the sexes and the consequences of it for women.

This paper examines adult and old-age mortality differentials in Canada between 1930 and 2007 at the provincial level, using theCanadian Human Mortality Database and the flexible smoothing P-spline method in two-dimensions well-suited to the study of smallpopulations. Our analysis reveals that provincial disparities in adult mortality in general, and among the elderly population in particular, are substantial in Canada. Moreover, based on the modal age at death and the standard deviation of ages at death above the mode, provincial disparities at older ages have barely reduced over time, despite the great mortality improvements in all provinces since the early 20th century. In the last few years studied, evidence of the shifting mortality regime was found among females in most Western and Central provinces, while all males were still undergoing an old-age mortality compression regime.

This paper investigates the importance of the work role for elderly people and how it contributes to life satisfaction. Data from the kibbutz population, where gradual retirement is practiced, show that elderly people in the kibbutz clearly wish to continue work as long as possible. Results also indicate that the wish to continue working is coupled with the work domain having a primary importance in their lives. The societal arrangements of the kibbutzim with regard to the work of the elderly seem to facilitate utilization of the work role for the elderly population.

IntroductionThe increase in aging population is a major advance in society, but also a great challenge, imposing the need for actions that promote successful aging, with higher subjective well-being and better health.Objectives(1) analyse the possible influence of socio-demographic variables in self-compassion, satisfaction with life, affection, physical and mental health (study variables); (2) understand how is that the study variables are associated with each other in old age; and (3) explore which variables best predict satisfaction with life and health in the elderly.MethodThe study sample consists of 155 individuals, aged between 65 and 94 years old, institutionalised and non-institutionalised.Results(1) significant correlations were found between some demographic and the study variables. (2) Significant associations were also found between self-compassion, subjective well-being and health. (3) linear regression analysis revealed that physical health is best predicted by greater life satisfaction and lower age; mental health is best predicted by increased satisfaction with life, self-compassion and decreased negative affect; and, finally, life satisfaction is predicted by a higher physical health and self-compassion.ConclusionsThese results suggest the importance of developing psychological skills such as warmth, tolerance and the acceptance of suffering bearing in mind that the elderly may experience difficulties resulting from the developmental characteristics of old age. Our findings suggest the possible beneficial effect of compassion, focused therapies designed for this specific population, particularly contributing to the promotion of life satisfaction and mental health of the Portuguese elderly.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

The purpose of the article is to find the answer to the questions whether television commercials have an impact on creating the image of the elderly and what image of old age and lifestyle of the elderly is built on the basis of television ads. Studies have confirmed the hypothesis and have shown that the media through the content presented in TV commercials have a real impact on the shape of the image of the elderly population. The results allow the media to be seen as strong and efficient tools in the process of creating the image as such, also of other populations or individuals. The qualitative results have shown that the image of old age is seen mainly as positive and neutral, whereas their lifestyle is perceived as real, idealized and attractive.

Considering that deaths from cardiovascular disease have been increasing in proportion to population ageing, prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia in elderly people is essential to avoid such outcome. Some biomarkers, albeit with limitations, have shown effectiveness in predicting cardiovascular events. Among them, blood levels of C-reactive protein, Lipoprotein A and, especially, coronary artery calcium. Dyslipidemia management primarily includes changes in lifestyle, such as physical activity, diet and smoking cessation. However, in elderly, drug therapy may be necessary, with statins being the first line treatment. In addition, therapies with drugs that decrease intestinal cholesterol absorption or increase LDL absorption by the liver, for example, have shown benefit when added to conventional therapy. Therefore, this review aims to contemplate some aspects of dyslipidemia in the elderly population, since appropriate management of such condition can significantly avoid undesirable outcomes.

A significant increase of the elderly population over the world leads to an increasing the relevance of the problems of maintaining health and adequate medical care for geriatric patients. Timely diagnosis and treatment of chronic noncommunicable diseases, the frequency of which increases with age, have been the particular importance. The researchers and practicing doctors have always paid special attention to hypertension in old and very old age due to its prevalence, changeable approaches to diagnosis and assessment of the impact on the prognosis, various ambiguous proposals for the management of the patients. Modern information about the international and domestic researches and recommendations on the issues of the pathophysiology of hypertension, features of its diagnosis and treatment in various clinical situations is presented in the review.
