Invertebrate surveys in Croatia conducted between 2005 and 2018 included 39 sampling sites yielding bycatch samples of Dixidae (Diptera). All records of this family from the territory of Croatia are summarized, including previously unpublished data. Collections contained six species of Dixa Meigen – D.dilatata Strobl, D.maculata Meigen, D.nebulosa Meigen, D.nubilipennis Curtis, D.puberula Loew, and D.submaculata Edwards, with Dixadilatata reported from Croatia for the first time. Information relating to the ecoregions in which species were found and specific species traits are provided. Compared to neighbouring countries, the Croatian species assemblage is most similar to the fauna of Italy and least similar to that of Serbia and Montenegro.

The first lichenological inventory in Koryakia has resulted in the list of 315 species reported from Parapolsky Dale, within and in vicinities of the Koryak State Reserve. Altogether 46 species are published from the Kamchatka Territory for the first time, including Lecanographa grumulosa new to Russia, East Asia and Beringia; Cercidospora trypetheliza, Lecania dubitans, Pertusaria borealis, Piccolia ochrophora, Protoparmelia cupreobadia, Rimularia badioatra and Strangospora moriformis new to Russian Far East; Abrothallus bertianus, Cladonia strepsilis, Physciella melanchra, Rimularia badioatra, Sclerococcum parasiticum, Sphinctrina leucopoda and Strangospora moriformis new to Beringia. The lichen diversity of the study area is relatively poor due to natural reasons. Comparison with neighboring regions (Kamchatka Peninsula, Chukotka, Magadan Region, Yakutia and Alaska) shows that the lichen flora of Parapolsky Dale contains almost no specific species. The majority of the species recorded here are also known from neighboring regions, especially Alaska and Kamchatka Peninsula.

ObjectiveMedical management of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is important in patients for whom surgery is inappropriate. We aimed to describe clinical profiles of adults with PHPT receiving cinacalcet.DesignA descriptive, prospective, observational study in hospital and specialist care centres.MethodsFor patients with PHPT, aged 23–92 years, starting cinacalcet treatment for the first time, information was collected on dosing pattern, biochemistry and adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Initial cinacalcet dosage and subsequent dose changes were at the investigator's discretion.ResultsOf 303 evaluable patients with PHPT, 134 (44%) had symptoms at diagnosis (mostly bone pain (58) or renal stones (50)). Mean albumin-corrected serum calcium (ACSC) at baseline was 11.4 mg/dl (2.9 mmol/l). The reasons for prescribing cinacalcet included: surgery deemed inappropriate (35%), patient declined surgery (28%) and surgery failed or contraindicated (22%). Mean cinacalcet dose was 43.9 mg/day (s.d., 15.8) at treatment start and 51.3 mg/day (31.8) at month 12; 219 (72%) patients completed 12 months treatment. The main reason for cinacalcet discontinuation was parathyroidectomy (40; 13%). At 3, 6 and 12 months from the start of treatment, 63, 69 and 71% of patients, respectively, had an ACSC of ≤10.3 mg/dl vs 9.9% at baseline. Reductions from baseline in ACSC of ≥1 mg/dl were seen in 56, 63 and 60% of patients respectively. ADRs were reported in 81 patients (27%), most commonly nausea. A total of 7.6% of patients discontinued cinacalcet due to ADRs.ConclusionsReductions in calcium levels of ≥1 mg/dl was observed in 60% of patients 12 months after initiation of cinacalcet, without notable safety concerns.

Protium aracouchini (Aubl.) Marchand [sin Icica aracouchini Aubl.], which occurs in the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve, in the Brazilian Amazon, was evaluated for the presence of galls, for resin exudation and the composition of the essential oils from the aerial parts and the resin. The experiment to stimulate the exudation of resin from the trunk was conducted using a 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid solution. The resin produced after 40 days and the aerial parts had their essential oils extracted in a Clevenger apparatus and the volatile chemical constituents were analyzed using GC/MS. The non-oxygenated sesquiterpenes α-copaene (21.15%) and α-gurjunene (13.69%), in addition to the oxygenated sesquiterpene spathulenol (10.32%), were detected as the majority constituents of the essential oil of the leaves, and a concentration similar to that of α-gurjunene was found in the branches (13.28%). The resin essential oil showed a high concentration of hydrocarbon monoterpenes (76.49%) with a predominance of α-pinene (17.57%) and limonene (46.11%). Four gall morphotypes were found associated with this species. The present study reports for the first time information on the volatile constituents and the resinous potential of P. aracouchini, and registers the morphotypes of the galls that help in the taxonomy of the species.

The new spruce disease known as "spruce cone rust" was discovered for the first time in Serbia and Montenegro. The fungus was detected in spruce forests only in the mountains regions (Kopaonik, Zlatar, Durmitor). This rust periodically damages the cones in localised forest areas and can be a serious problem. Usually seeds are not formed in diseased cones, and even when they are produced, malformation and resinosis of the cones hinder seed dispersal or extraction. Those seeds that are formed tend to weigh less and have poor germination. As this disease is a serious problem, care must be taken to prevent the spread of the disease to the new uninfected regions.

AbstractFifteen species of stoneflies (Plecoptera) were collected in the Lake Athabasca region of northern Saskatchewan. Capnia nearctica Banks is reported for the first time from Saskatchewan, and collection records of Isogenoides frontalis (Newman), Nemoura rickeri Jewett, and Paracapnia angulata Hanson represent significant range extensions. All species collected from lotic habitats have biogeographical affinities with streams from the Southern Boreal Ecoregion, but some species collected from Lake Athabasca have biogeographical affinities with the Southern Boreal Ecoregion and others have affinities with the Tundra.

What happens when a European State breaches its international obligations and then ceases to exist? Does its obligation to repair the harm caused by the breach devolve to a new state that occupies part of the territory of an old state? When will a new European State be held accountable for violations that took place before the entry into force of a human rights treaty? This comment examines the European Court of Human Rights' (hereinafter ‘the Court’ or ‘the ECtHR’) encounter with the law of state succession, specifically succession to treaty obligations and succession to responsibility for the wrongful acts of a predecessor state. In Bijelic v Montenegro and Serbia the Court held that Montenegro was to be automatically regarded as a party to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (hereinafter ‘the Convention’), as well as Protocol No 1 thereto, from the date of its declaration of independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro (hereinafter ‘the State Union’), and that Montenegro alone could be held responsible for violations of these instruments occurring in the territory of the State Union that began before March 2004 (the date of ratification of the Convention and Protocol 1 by the State Union) but continuing through 2009. Bijelic is not the first time the Court has been called upon to decide a question of succession to treaty obligations or responsibility, but the judgment is noteworthy for the unique approach the Court adopted to deciding both of these issues. This comment will place the decision in the larger context of Court practice with respect to both of the implicated succession issues, identify the aspects the Trial Chamber's analysis that distinguish it from its predecessors and discuss the decision of the Court in light of general and emerging trends in international law. In the process, this comment will provide a uniquely thorough examination of ECtHR practice with respect to succession to responsibility and identify the trends, to the extent that such trends exist, that characterize the Court's approach to this area of law.

This issue of the journal sees the publication of the 3 papers placed first, second and third in the 2005 International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) Research Awards in Psychogeriatrics. For the first time in the history of the awards (first presented in 1989 and awarded at each biennial IPA Congress thereafter), entries were limited to junior investigators within five years of the award of their terminal degree who were at no higher than Assistant Professor/Instructor level at the time of submission. The awards were judged by a panel of four comprising Bengt Winblad (panel chair and 12th IPA Congress chair), David Ames (editor International Psychogeriatrics), John O'Brien (deputy editor International Psychogeriatrics and 12th IPA Congress Scientific Steering Committee Chair) and Joel Sadavoy (then President elect of IPA). The field comprised 11 papers from nine countries (Canada, China (including the Special Administrative region of Hong Kong), Greece, Egypt, the Netherlands, Serbia and Montenegro, Spain, Uganda and the U.S.A.) and contained several papers which in a less competitive field would have been worthy recipients of an award. In addition to the three award winning papers, in an unprecedented decision the judges approved a special citation for a fourth submission entitled “Psychiatric disorders among the elderly on non-psychiatric wards in an African setting” by Noeline Nakasujja of Uganda for “Outstanding Research Endeavors undertaken in a previously un-researched field, in the face of unusual operational challenges.”

To colonize and infect the host, arthroconidial yeasts must avoid being killed by the host’s defenses. The formation of biofilms on implanted devices allows fungi to avoid host responses and to disseminate into the host. To better study the mechanisms of infection by arthroconidial yeasts, adherence and biofilm formation were assayed using patient samples collected over 10 years. In clinical samples, adherence varies within species, but the relative adherence is constant for those samples isolated from the same infection site. Herein we document, for the first time, in-vitro biofilm formation by Trichosporon dohaense, T. ovoides, T. japonicum, T. coremiiforme, Cutaneotrichosporon mucoides, Cutaneotrichosporon cutaneum, Galactomyces candidus, and Magnusiomyces capitatus on clinically relevant catheter material. Analysis of biofilm biomass assays indicated that biofilm mass changes less than 2-fold, regardless of the species. Our results support the hypothesis that most pathogenic fungi can form biofilms, and that biofilm formation is a source of systemic infections.

Cosmopolitan freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii L a n k e s t e r 1880 (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) was recorded for the first time in the lake Velika peskara near Zrenjanin (Serbia and Montenegro) in summer 1998. A natural population of C. sowerbii from the lake Velika peskara was analyzed for genetic variability at 9 enzyme loci (Gpi, Hk, Idh-1, Idh-2, Me, Mdh-1 Mdh-2, Pgm and Sod) by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A zymogram indicated that population was monomorphic at all analyzed loci.
