Harnessing the Potential of Cloud Computing to Transform Higher Education

While the adoption of new technology is being increasingly recognised as a catalyst for transformation in higher education, the high cost of technology infrastructure and other related resources is a financial burden, and hence, a barrier to many higher education institutions, especially in the context of the recent economic recession. Indications are that the adoption of the low-cost and even free (in some cases) cloud computing solutions could bring about large scale adoption of new technology by higher education institutions. This chapter provides an overview of cloud computing, explores the challenges around cloud computing, details the significant benefits that it can bring to higher education, and discusses how organizations could harness cloud services to significantly reduce capital and maintenance costs on educational technology and to enhance its scalability, accessibility, and flexibility. The chapter further recommends the use of hybrid cloud deployment to achieve a balance between risks and benefits of this new computing paradigm.

In this article, we look at the determinants of the new technology adoption by consumers in the case of mobile telecommunications. The dynamic nature of the telecom industry is a result of the frequent technological change. Consumers witness different technology standards in mobile communications, starting from the first generation (1G) to second generation (2G) subsequently to third (3G) and now experiencing fourth (4G) in some countries such as Norway, Sweden, South Korea, and the USA including ours. The movement from one standard to the other has been predicted to be smooth as all of them are vertical substitutes for each other. Given the various dimensions such as price, requirements, utility and so on, these technology standards are not perfect substitutes. The article investigates the prospect of a new technology standard roll out in India. A survey of 400 mobile phone customers in metro telecom circles has been carried out for this purpose. The study applies structural equation modeling (SEM) and explores the adoption intention of this new technology among the respondents. Results show that the presence of low-cost alternatives that is the availability of a lower technology standard poses a significant hurdle to the adoption of new technology services.

In today’s higher education institutions (HEIs), intelligentization and digitization of education process are greatly required. Production industries are presently making changes from large-scale production to specialized or customized production. The term Industry 4.0 (IR 4.0) represents the fourth industrial revolution; the present movement or inclination of automation and data exchange and sharing in manufacturing technologies with the main aim of satisfying the individual customer desire and needs. The quick progressions in production technologies and its uses in the industries enhance production efficiency and change the workplace from tasks-based to the human-focused features. Higher education in the IR 4.0 (HE 4.0) is a complex, intricate and intriguing opportunity which has the potential to change the society for the better. The convergence and integration of man and machine will decrease the subject distance between social science and humanity and also technology and science. This will definitely need in-depth and diverse interdisciplinary teaching, research and innovation. Cloud computing (CC) as an IR 4.0 contributing technology, provides a novel means of educating people that will ultimately disrupt the present HEIs systems. Cloud-based education as a service in the era of fourth industry (CEaaS 4.0) can deliver education services in the shortest, most effective, and best affordability. The aim of this study is to propose a CEaaS system requirements specification (SRS) model that includes functional and non-fictional requirements; aligned with IR 4.0, the next industrial revolution.

Public and federal agencies from countries around the world are increasingly providing information technology based services via the Internet - known as e-government. Several of the general requirements of e-government services are satisfactorily met by the emerging Cloud Computing paradigm that promises a number of benefits such as service elasticity (the ability to handle peaks and troughs of demands); optimization of costs; capacity to handle large volumes of data; and a generalized model of Internet-based access for end-users. For this reason, it is no surprise that Cloud related technologies are gradually leveraging e-government platforms. In this chapter, a support framework is outlined that complies with and extends the well-known ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) set of best practices for IT (Information Technology) service management. It is suggested that the proposed framework can be usefully deployed to assist in the process of migrating e-government services provision to the Cloud Computing environment.

Many higher education institutions are hoping to enhance student engagement in learning environment for improving the educational experiences and outcomes. Therefore, providing expectations of learners and using new technology environments to facilitate their teaching and learning activities are prominent to make universities competitive. A solution can be cloud computing which is the newest alternative in current educational environments and has significant impact on teaching and learning. This study explores the cloud-based educational environment and discusses how universities may take advantage of cloud computing in terms of students' social presence in relation to satisfaction and perceived learning. This study conducted a survey consisting of 13 questions among students from a public university in the southern region of peninsular Malaysia. The total number of respondents is 103 students. Through this study, a basis for the investigation of cloud computing in higher education is successfully established.

In a digital arena, information technology services provision is shifting to a cloud computing ecosystem. Cloud computing is an enabler for digital transformation with cloud computing service providers central to the digital transformation of both companies and higher education. As cloud computing service providers play the role of an ‘architect' for companies as supply chain is digitised and in supporting higher education institutions striving to deliver user-focused services in the face of increasing competition, an understanding of successful characteristics of cloud computing service provider business models is of main interest for providers and may also be of value for companies and higher education institutions when selecting cloud computing service providers. Despite the importance of cloud computing service providers' business models, information systems literature has provided limited analysis on the characteristics of successful business models. As such, the chapter aims to contribute to the emerging research on characteristics of successful business models.

Resource optimization is a key concern for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Cloud Computing, as the recent generation in computing technology of the fourth industrial revolution, has emerged as the main standard of service and resource delivery. As cloud computing has grown into a mature technology and is being rapidly adopted in many HEIs across the world, retaining customers of this innovative technology has become a challenge to the cloud service providers. Current research trends on cloud computing have sought to study the acceptance or adoption of technology; however, little research has been devoted to the continuance use in an organizational setting. To address this gap, this study aims to investigate the antecedents of cloud computing continuance use in HEIs. Hence, drawing on the prior literature in organizational-level continuance, this research established a conceptual model that extends and contextualizes the IS continuance model through the lens of the TOE framework (i.e., technological, organizational, and environmental influences). The results of a pilot study, conducted through a survey with information and communications technology (ICT) decision makers, and based on the proposed conceptual model, indicate that the instrument is both reliable and valid, and so point the way towards further research. The paper closes with a discussion of the research limitations, contribution, and future directions.
