Designing Usable Interactive Systems within the Railway Domain

Train drivers as well as signallers interact with several computer based information and communication systems to ensure safe and effective train operations. So far the technical progress mostly determines the design of such interactive systems and requirements out of a human factors perspective are not integrated. Beside the development of technical functions it is essential to take the usability as a quality attribute of every interactive system into account. If the usability is not considered during system development, it could occur that there are several functions available within a system but the user does not know how to use them in an efficient way. This chapter describes a psychological approach to design or redesign usable interactive systems within the railway domain. Some examples will be discussed to demonstrate the approach and the results.

This chapter presents results and experiences from the MOBEL (MOBile ELectronic patient record) project at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. MOBEL was a multidisciplinary research project established in 2000. The problem area of the project was communication and information needs in hospital wards, and the aim of the project was to develop and explore methods and prototypes for point of care clinical information systems (PoCCS) that support clinicians in their patient-centered activities. The chapter summarizes four sub studies performed during the project. Each study presents different approaches to user-centered design of PoCCS. Findings from these studies confirm the need for mobile information and communication technology (ICT) in hospitals. Furthermore, the studies demonstrate how more user involvement and complementary approaches to traditional requirements engineering (RE) and system development methods can be useful when developing mobile information and communication systems for clinicians.

Journal as a medium to explain the results of research. It has developed in such a way especially because of the rapid support of information and communication technology today. Various models of online-based journaling management can be easily operated by journals managers as well as writers / researchers who will include research results in the journal. It's just that with the number of journals that exist today, causing difficulties for the manager of journals to be able to promote the journals he managed, in addition to the manager of the journal sometimes difficult to get a researcher who would put his paper into the journal he manages. Meanwhile, with the number of journals that have been online, researchers will find it difficult to get information from the journals. Researchers should open their journal entries, read their profiles and publications, until they are interested to include papers in the journal. This problem is the background of the development of online journals aggregator system, which with this system will facilitate the meeting between journals, journal managers and writers or researchers. In order to develop an online journal aggregator system, a software development method is needed that directly captures the needs of its users. User Centered Design (UCD) is a philosophy in software design that puts users as the center of system development. The UCD approach has been supported by various techniques, methods, tools, procedures, and processes that help design a more user-centered interactive system. With UCD it is expected that the online journals aggregator system can produce a design that will make it easier for its users, both in terms of functionality and from the side of the system interface.

For e-business, the computer-based processing of value-creation, especially for knowledge-intensive business processes, plays a prominent role with the help of modern information and communication techniques. At least since the further development of the classical Internet for the Semantic Web, the content-based knowledge processing and knowledge transfer have gained more importance. In this chapter it is shown that ontologies represent an auspicious instrument to ensure the interoperability of information and communication systems that have to work together on the work-sharing development of knowledge-intensive business processes. Ontologies become important when agents with heterogeneous knowledge backgrounds co-operate on such business processes. Firstly, the complex and often ill-considered use of the definition of ontology will be discussed critically and its meaning specified. Thereupon it will be shown (with the help of two application areas) how ontologies can be used effectively to support knowledge-intensive business processes in e-business. On the one hand, the chapter is concerned with the management of knowledge of competences, which agents have to have a command of for successful process execution. On the other hand, it is about the management of know-how, which has already been collected from completed projects and should be reused in new projects.

E-Commerce is a process model of selling and buying goods using information and communication technology. This business model offers a broad market for products owned by the seller. However this sales model is not yet common for agricultural products. Most of the process of buying and selling agricultural products is still done conventionally. The lack of agricultural e-commerce sites is the main reason for the research conducted. This research will develop an agricultural e-commerce system. This system has two main modules that are sales module and purchasing module. This article specifically develops sales modules for agricultural e-commerce. In the development of modules applied Dynamic System Development Method. The used of this model is based on characteristic of the project which have limited number of development team and short development time. The development stages consist of pre-project, feasibility study, business study, functional model iteration, and design and build iteration. In this study a prototype has been produced for the sales module on agricultural e-commerce that is being developed

Students are accessed using paper and pen on cognitive abilities in Nigeria. This method of assessment encourages different forms of examination malpractices. The threat of examination malpractices on the validity of examination outcomes has resulted in some examination bodies adopting different methods of examination. One of such methods is the computer based test (CBT). Using survey research method, this study investigated the levels of competency in computer literacy skills possessed by senior secondary school students. Three research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. Problems encountered by the students and prospective methods of enhancing computer based test (CBT) acceptance in Nigeria were also documented. A total of 310 copies of the questionnaire were administered to students who participated in the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) at Afrihub Information and Communication Technology (CBT) centre, Institution of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu and Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu and 237 representing 76% were adequately completed and found usable. The findings revealed among others that majority of the respondents confirmed that CBT can curb examination malpractice. Majority of candidates were also found to prefer CBT to the paper and pencil test (PPT). The mean, standard deviation and Pearson‟s Correlation Analysis showed that the respondent is preference for CBT were sensitive across gender. While improving electricity was identified as critical in enhancing CBT examinations, poor ICT skills on the part of students and the invigilators were also identified as the major problems facing the implementation of JAMB CBT examination in Nigeria.

Network traffic passing through modern computing systems is a huge information flow, which contains information of varying degrees of importance. It is shown the necessity of using the most rational methods of increasing the stability of the network in electronic warfare to force the enemy to spend more time on selecting new principles of influence on communication systems.
