Innovative Approaches in Project Management Blended Education

In recent years, many business education programs have focused on the development of competences, instead of knowledge transfer. For this reason, various innovative training approaches were adopted, including educational simulations. The increasing availability of the simulation resources also contributes to the proliferation of simulation in business education curricula. The chapter presents how the simulations were introduced in a Master degree program on Project Management, in project planning and controlling module. The Master program has a blended-learning approach, which nicely fits to the simulation requirements. The simulations are based on an agent-based model of the project resource leveling process, part of the project planning and scheduling topic. The authors made several evaluations of the students’ results before and after the simulations. The main conclusion of the experiment is that the educational simulations improve the competence development process, only if they are properly designed and performed.

Planning and scheduling is extremely important role in construction projects thank to the increasing difficulties during this field. Construction Planning is that the necessary warning to Scheduling and determining general sequence, defining labour tasks, construction methods and assigning responsibilities, inappropriate planning can cause major delays with the project work. For the planning and scheduling work requires huge amount of  paperwork, which makes the management very burdensome. These problems may be solved employing a  project management software which helps to grant a planned approach to planning. Nowadays use of project management (PM) software as a tool for managing and organizing work has gained its importance in construction industry and continues to grow at a faster pace in other industries also. During this study, attempt is made  to check project management software such as MS project and Primavera and their feasibility is studied.

Construction companies are required to employ effective methods of project planning and scheduling in today's competitive environment. Time and cost are critical factors in project success, and they can vary based on the type and amount of resources used for activities, such as labor, tools, and materials. In addition, resource leveling strategies that are used to limit fluctuations in a project's resource consumption also affect project time and cost. The multi-mode resource-constrained discrete-time–cost-resource optimization (MRC-DTCRO) is an optimization tool that is developed for scheduling of a set of activities involving multiple execution modes with the aim of minimizing time, cost, and resource moment. Moreover, uncertainty in cost should be accounted for in project planning because activities are exposed to risks that can cause delays and budget overruns. This paper presents a fuzzy-multi-mode resource-constrained discrete-time–cost-resource optimization (F-MRC-DTCRO) model for the time-cost-resource moment tradeoff in a fuzzy environment while satisfying all the project constraints. In the proposed model, fuzzy numbers are used to characterize the uncertainty of direct cost of activities. Using this model, different risk acceptance levels of the decision maker can be addressed in the optimization process. A newly developed multi-objective optimization algorithm called ENSCBO is used to search non-dominated solutions to the fuzzy multi-objective model. Finally, the developed model is applied to solve a benchmark test problem. The results indicate that incorporating the fuzzy structure of uncertainty in costs to previously developed MRC-DTCRO models facilitates the decision-making process and provides more realistic solutions.

This paper addresses the integrated processes of planning and scheduling of projects using technologies advanced tools as means for managing change in the era of the 4IR. The paper explores the traditional project management planning and scheduling tools in conjunction with what technology has to offer, to bridge the gap between the traditional project management planning and scheduling tools and what the modern-day business market demands. An analysis of literature covering a wide range of theoretic and empirical studies was performed. The theories underlying various planning and scheduling methods were analysed in relation to the design of projects. A descriptive quantitative secondary data was used as a tool to assess the impact of technology on project planning for scheduling. The analysis of the study’s data was conducted using the principles of cross - tabulation. Inferences were drawn on the significant impact of the use of advanced technological tools on project planning for scheduling in current business time. Organisations can make use of the findings of this study to correctly apply the available advanced technological tools for more efficient schedule management planning to enhance the successful delivery of their projects. Further, this research can be used to provide learning opportunities for new and inexperienced planners and schedulers, and as a basis for further research in this field of knowledge.

Purpose The implementation and control processes of project planning and scheduling involve a wide range of methods and tools. Despite the development and modification and integration of the project management theory with newer scheduling approaches in particular, practitioners’ views on the efficiency and effectiveness of these methods and tools differ. This situation can be attributed in part to a lack of understanding of the most appropriate basis for implementing these methods and tools. This study, therefore, aims to overcome this deficiency by conceptualizing and adopting a taxonomy of planning and scheduling methods. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a review and discourse analysis of the literature covering a large number of theoretical and empirical studies. The underlying theories of various planning and scheduling methods were analyzed with respect to the taxonomy criteria adopted in the study. Findings Using the taxonomy, the key characteristics of planning and scheduling methods considered in this study were identified and interpreted. These included concepts and theories; key features; suitability and usability; and benefits and limitations. Overall, the findings suggest that project managers should consider taxonomy as a support tool for selecting and prioritizing the most appropriate method or combination of methods for managing their projects. Recommendations include the need for more advanced or multi-dimensional taxonomies to cope with the diversity of project type and size. Originality/value The results of the study allow project managers to improve their current practices by utilizing taxonomy when considering the implementation of planning and scheduling methods. Moreover, taxonomy can be considered as a tool to promote learning on the part of those less experienced in planning and scheduling. Taxonomy can be considered as an initial platform for further research in this area.

<p>Complexities faced by oil and gas projects due to uncertainty and risk, demand the implementation of project management techniques for their successful completion. Therefore, this is made by using analytical hierarchy process, to identify and prioritize the key factors for successful project management performance of oil and gas projects. These factors are categorized into three groups which include attributes of project staff, project planning process and assessment of project quality. Using expert choice, a hierarchy is developed followed by pairwise comparison based upon data collection from industrial experts of oil and gas sector. Results of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) concluded that, project completion within estimated time and budget, clarity of objectives and involvement of top management are most crucial elements for improvement in project management performance of oil and gas projects. Whereas sensitivity analysis being carried out according to three different scenarios highlighted factors according to their relative importance.</p>
