Services and Service Computing

Internet technology continues to grow fast and has now become the dominant computing technology in developing software and computing applications. By fully taking advantage of the quick development of the service concept and modeling, Web services technology, as part of Internet technology, has rapidly evolved and made a drastic impact on enterprise integration. A deployed Web based service, relying on a suite of Internet based standard protocols, is self-contained, self-describing, and network-neutral computing component. It can be readily deployed, published, located, and invoked over the heterogeneous networks. This chapter starts with a brief introduction to the concepts of services and enterprise service computing. The Web service’s technical fundamentals are then fully explored. XML, SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI as the core technologies are further explained in great detail. Implementation examples are finally used to demonstrate how the Web services technology can be typically applied in integrating distributed applications across an organization.

Web services technology is emerging as a promising infrastructure to support loosely coupled, Internet-based applications that are distributed, heterogeneous and dynamic. It provides a standards-based, process-centric framework for achieving the sharing of distributed heterogeneous applications. While Web services technology provides a promising foundation for developing distributed applications for e-business, additional features are required to make this paradigm truly useful in the real world. In particular, interactions among business organizations need to follow the policies, regulations, security and other business rules of the organizations. An effective way to control, restrict and enforce business rules in the use of Web services is to integrate business event and rule management concepts and techniques into the Web services model. In this paper, we focus on incorporating the business event and rule-management concepts into the Web services model at the service provider side. Based on a code-generation approach, we have developed techniques and implemented tools to generate Web service “wrappers” and other objects required to integrate an Event-Trigger-Rule (ETR) technology with the Web services technology.

Requirements on encryption of web-based examination system were analyze, and different encryption technologies were used to meet the needs on three levels, including important data, core processing logic and some restricted functions. For important data, its confidentiality and integrity were realized. The core processing logic in ASP script was built in COM component. And some restricted functions were protected with hardware key. Encryption which protected data, code and function provided necessary safety for the web-based examination system.

This paper presents an innovative application of a management platform based on network environment for the trade information. The platform is an application on the web-based designed to service human resource in cultural trade, and economic entities, &. The system is based on modern pedagogy, and theory and method of combining advanced internet technology by priding students’ information on seeking job, in the same time, it will provide the information of authoritative data for the real economic unit to access to meet the needs of people resume through the online platform.

In the current market, there is a wide range of interesting technological solutions. So, it is recommended to properly research, identify and implement the solution which most suited to the information system strategy. In contemporary years due to the brisk development of internet technology, online business is gradually rampant. Website users are very demanding as all the time they expect the web services to be quickly and easily accessible from different places around the world, whenever they need it. Website users always need very rapid and quick responses. Website development is a process that takes time and takes more time if the development language is simple, which is not consistent with this quick and evolving world of technology. So that's why frameworks are developed to overcome these problems related to web development and to create websites very conveniently.

Nowadays, due to the ease of availability of internet technology large numbers of people are using the World Wide Web. The companies are changing their way to do business. They are shifting from a data-oriented system to a service-oriented system. Now companies are able to depict their business in the form of web services and make them available on the internet. Due to this number of web services are available for satisfying the user’s need. But to select the best web service that satisfies user specification is a challenging issue. So, it is necessary to consider not only the functional requirement of the web services but also the nonfunctional requirements of the web services. On the other hand, users are not able to specify the exact nonfunctional parameter requirements so, there is a need for QoS processor which can understand the user's need and can extract the parameters for QoS. In this paper, a modified TOPSIS approach based on MCDM is proposed for the selection of efficient web service. The web services that are near to user expectations are selected out using the proposed method. Experimental outcomes show that the proposed approach determines the most promising results.

Web services play a dominant role in service computing and for realizing service-oriented architectures (SOA), which define the architectural foundation for various kinds of distributed applications. In many business domains, Web services must exhibit quality attributes such as robustness, security, dependability, performance, scalability and accounting. As a consequence, there is a high demand to develop, deploy and consume Web services equipped with well-defined quality of service (QoS) attributes – so-called QoS-aware Web services. Currently, there is only limited development support for the creation of QoS-aware Web services, though. In this work we present a tool chain that facilitates development, deployment and testing of QoS-aware Web services. The tool chain has following features: i) integration of standard components such as widely used IDEs, ii) usage of standards and specifications, and iii) support for various application servers and Web services infrastructures.

This chapter is about the idea of medical information interchange networks providing signal and possibly image interpretation services. Technically, the issue is similar to Web-accessible services: document conversion, searching the Web, photo development, video on demand, electronic booking of hotels or airline ticketing. Various services use state-of-the-art Internet technology for commerce and entertainment purposes. Unfortunately, medical applications are rarely represented in that form.

Enhanced knowledge warehouse (eKW) is an extension of the enhanced data warehouse (eDW) system (Abramowicz, 2002). eKW is a Web services-based system that allows the automatic filtering of information from the Web to the data warehouse and automatic retrieval through the data warehouse. Web services technology extends eKW beyond the organization. It makes the system open and allows utilization of external software components, thus enabling the creation of distributed applications.

Purpose Universities across the globe are spending an increasing amount of their budgets to offer web-based services to cater information need especially off-campus students. However, the success of web-based services depends on how well the target users are satisfied with the use of the web services. The purpose of this paper is to assess students’ satisfaction with the use of the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) web-based services. Design/methodology/approach Pilot tested questionnaire-based survey was administered to collect data from a sample of 388; selected through systematic sampling technique from the study’s population consisted of master level students belonged to 11 different academic departments of the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities at the AIOU from all over Pakistan. Findings Based on 318 useful questionnaires, response rate 82 percent, the results show that majority of the students were satisfied with the use of at the AIOU web-based services except for online mailing books tracking system, library web OPAC and web radio service. However, t-test analysis shows that no difference was found in the opinion of male and female respondents in terms of their satisfaction with the use of the web services. ANOVA results indicate that there was no significant difference depicted in satisfaction with the use of the web services among the respondents enrolled in different disciplines of the faculty. Similarly, no significant difference was found among different age groups. Moreover, the respondents belonging to all five provinces; Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Baluchistan, Gilgit Baltistan, and Federal Capital territory showed the same level of satisfaction with the use of the services. The results of regression analysis (R2=0.226) denote that both perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use significantly predicted, 22.6 percent, in students’ satisfaction with the use the web services. Practical implications The study provides valuable recommendations which may be helpful for web administration of the university to improve AIOU web-based services. Originality/value To the best knowledge, this is the first study conducted to investigate the satisfaction with the use of the university web-based services in distance education’s perspective of Pakistan.
