Integrating Business Intelligence Services in the Cloud

Business Intelligence (BI) solutions are among the popular applications that businesses demand in the Cloud. Although Business Intelligence functionality is already provided in the Cloud, vendors concentrate on providing existing products like Software as a Service, ignoring changing business and provisioning models of software. Business Intelligence functionality provided in the Cloud is lacking important integration features needed by other Cloud-based applications. While a simple upload of the data to be analyzed into a Cloud-based BI solution is already possible and well established, the visualization of the results and the interactive parts of the analysis are always provided inside the Cloud-based BI solution itself. However, as this chapter shows, common usage scenarios of integrated Cloud applications demand an integration of the analysis reports from BI applications into the user interface of other Cloud-based applications. This chapter describes how a fully integrated Cloud-based BI solution can collaborate with other Cloud-based applications. The technical concept illustrated with an example delineates how the required interface can be provided.

Business Intelligence (BI) includes many tools, techniques and technologies. BI processes often involve team of human decision makers and end-users to extract, explore and analyse the data. The results, decisions or models after analysis need to be implemented into operational systems. There can be considerable time delay between business events happening and action taken thus loosing opportunities. Intelligent techniques such as rule-based reasoning and case-based reasoning have been used extensively to address wide range of intelligent tasks including personalisation and recommendation. Some BI tasks can be modelled, automated and delivered through services rather than done on ad-hoc basis. The authors represent a service based approach to BI where a service corresponds to a well defined analytical functionality implemented using intelligent technique(s), filtering techniques or hybrids of them accessing only relevant data from database specifically modelled and designed for such tasks. The authors discuss an application of the approach for a value-added service in mobile domain.

Business Intelligence (BI) has been a top technology development concern for high-ranking IT executives over the past decade. The objective of BI is to use data analysis as a competitive weapon, deeply integrated into business processes. The ability of an organization to provide enterprise-level BI services depends heavily on its IT strategy, itself a function of existing technology investment. Previous research has described four IT architecture stages ranging from isolated applications to modular services, each with increasing complexity and service capabilities. Representatives from four companies were interviewed about the status of their BI activities, and the resulting data helps identify common barriers faced by these organizations in the provisioning of enterprise-level BI services. Interview results also describe the success of a limited-scope operational BI system by one of these firms, and the role of semantic data exchange technologies, primarily XML, in this system.

Cloud computing has become an important topic to research because of the value it can provide to the business. In this article, the researcher examined how Business Intelligence (BI) can be offered to the business over the Internet as a solution. BI environments, however, require a large capital layout to implement and support the large volumes of data that needs to be analysed to identify trends. It also requires enormous processing power which places pressure on the business resources. The goal of this article is to show how BI will be offered as a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution to the business. The BI SaaS solution will allow companies to reduce cost of having a BI solution and also having access to the latest software which will give the business an edge on their competition. By making use of a literature review the researcher were able gather and present evidence to support the value that the BI SaaS solution will add to the business and how such a BI SaaS solution will look like. As part of this research paper the researcher will also identify the challenges that the business will face when making us a BI SaaS solution.

Software as a service (SaaS) is a new software development and deployment paradigm over the cloud. It offers Information Technology services dynamically as “on-demand” basis. The related application data are stored in the data centers managed by the Cloud Service Providers. Many enterprises are facing a major research challenge due to the unavailability of generic cloud architecture for designing, developing and deploying of cloud services. In this paper a flexible architecture for SaaS has been proposed, specifically for data centric cloud applications which may have access to heterogeneous types of databases. The architecture is composed of several layers, which are interacting with each other through the dynamically selected access points of the corresponding layers interfaces. The paper also enlisted the crucial features for SaaS architectural model. Moreover, a detailed comparative study has been done among the proposed SaaS architectural framework and other existing similar proposals based on the listed features.

The focus area of this paper is twofold: covering the theoretical background about cloud-based Business Intelligence, and the practical approach using the Jaspersoft environment. Also, by choosing the main application area, we emphasized the advantage of using such instruments as an educational tool, with the goal of giving the students an opportunity to discover data collections and explore analysis methods. After an overview of the Business Intelligence and Cloud Computing main concepts, we have pointed out the benefits of using BI in the Software as a Service (SaaS) philosophy, and we used the facilities of Jaspersoft BI software to model frequently used analysis requirements on several virtual firms

Micro tasks are small knowledge probes that can provide speed and accuracy data about how well a user interface (UI) supports work tasks. We present a software system that supports researchers in authoring, managing and conducting micro tasks studies. The system supports the generation of different types of micro task questions, provides tagging functionality, can exchange data with external systems such as simulators, is fully integrated with eye tracking, presents micro tasks questions to participants, allows for online observation, and stores responses in a data base.
