Towards a Framework for Lifelong E-Learning and Employability

This chapter presents and introduces several key concepts related to lifelong e-learning as a way for employability from the point of view of the socio-technical approach. Current employability needs and continuous training via new information and communication technologies bring an opportunity for a fresh proposal in this research area. Starting with the human capital approach, and several issues related to a socio-technical lifelong e-learning, we introduce the need of a new conceptual framework for improving the employability of workers and global citizens, which is based on relationships between people and technologies.

in the modern world, the problems of improving vocal pedagogy and methodological developments in the field of training future singers and vocal teachers should be considered not only from the point of view of the traditional classical school of singing described in the works of famous scientists, but also together with new information and communication technologies that have already firmly entered various fields of pedagogy and mass culture. It will be a mistake to oppose the fundamental vocal teaching methodology, which gives new generations of students a solid basis for the formation of vocal competencies, new pedagogical approaches in the field of hearing development using modern information and digital technologies. The task of modern methodist scientists is to combine classics and modernity, traditions and innovations in order to form new competencies among vocalist students, future performers and teachers.

The increasing importance of e-learning has been a boosting element for the emergence of Internet-based educational tools. As we move into the information age, tremendous efforts are made in the development of new information and communication technologies for educational purposes. The ultimate goal is to facilitate e-learning methodologies and acquisition. The chapter’s contribution is in the area of open source software for technology-enhanced learning. First, we report on the capabilities of Pliant, a novel software framework for Web-based courseware development. Pliant’ design features upon which e-learning capabilities are built are presented, showing that Pliant has some advantages over existing software, including flexibility, efficiency, and universal usability. A case study of the use of Pliant in the project “Multilanguage Database for Localization” developed at the CUSB School of Translation is presented. Second, we present Academia,3 a Pliant-based courseware development Web portal, and its use in translation studies at CUSB.

En este artículo se reflexiona desde el punto de vista conceptual, sobre la influencia que las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC) y el impacto que éstas han generado en los procesos de enseñanza/aprendizaje. La educación superior en Colombia ha venido transformándose en las recientes décadas, con miras a responder de manera decidida a los requerimientos de una sociedad renovada, que busca contar con profesionales más hábiles, que gestionen eficientemente procesos administrativos y académicos en Instituciones de Educación Superior en estos tiempos de globalización económica. La metodología utilizada en este estudio se enmarca en la revisión documental de investigaciones y publicaciones efectuadas en los últimos diez años. Los resultados apuntan a que las TIC han aportado considerablemente a diferentes aspectos neurálgicos, en el contexto educativo y que las aplicaciones en los procesos pedagógicos son cada vez mayores. This article reflects from the conceptual point of view, on the influence that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the impact they have generated in the teaching / learning processes. Higher education in Colombia has been transforming in recent decades, with a view to responding decisively to the requirements of a renewed society, which seeks to have more skilled professionals, who efficiently manage administrative and academic processes in Higher Education Institutions in these times of economic globalization. The methodology used in this study is part of the documentary review of research and publications carried out in the last ten years. The results suggest that ICTs have contributed considerably to different neuralgic aspects in the educational context and that the applications in pedagogical processes are increasing.

The chapter deals with the latest problems within the ICT-supported instruction and is structured into four parts. The introductory part emphasizes the importance of information and communication technologies implemented in the process of instruction and attracts attention to the didactic aspects of this process (i.e. whether teachers are able to apply suitable methods and forms of instruction, create and use appropriate didactic means which are offered by new technologies, and whether students reach a higher level of knowledge if they attend lessons managed by ICT or run traditionally by teachers). Part two deals with e-learning related phenomena as definitions and basic terminology which has not been clearly defined yet, evaluating pedagogical research in the field of e-learning. Part three focuses on results of analyses of research studies presented in three important e-learning conferences within the last decade in the Czech Republic: eLearning (Faculty of Informatics and Management, University of Hradec Kralove), ICTE (Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Ostrava), and SCO (Sharable Content Objects, Masaryk University, Brno). Part four introduces a new approach to tailoring the online courses to individual student´s needs and results of research in this field. Not only the learning content but the methodology is considered here from the teacher´s point of view, and the expectations (hypotheses) are verified by the pedagogical experiment.

Forest workers training is recognized as a necessary precondition for sustainable forest management. As sustainable forest management sets higher levels of standards, the adoption of new information and communication technologies (ICT) in forest workers’ training and extension systems is a necessity in the Information Age, which will help the current and future workforce to better fit in the increasingly digitalized and demanding world of forest work. However, limitations on the use of ICTs do exist and should be seriously taken into consideration. Digital divide is evident both in developed and developing countries, making the implementation of ICT applications difficult, especially in the case of African and Asian countries. Furthermore, the development of e-learning systems for forest professionals must adhere to very specific design standards and educational theories. In this context, research should focus on the needs of the end-users at regional or national level. However, all efforts will be ineffective unless they are incorporated and facilitated by a stable framework of political and financial support. The combination of long-term planning, clear target setting, and cost effectiveness is critical for the successful promotion of sustainable forest management through e-learning.

The potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is playing increasing role in various pedagogical contexts. The necessity to integrate technologies in learning enhances educators’ digital competences is constantly highlighted in education policy documents European Union and national strategic documents and recommendations. Following the advance of digital technologies, the State Border Guard College of Latvia is constantly looking after innovations in ICT and education contexts. Since 2011 Specialized English language e-learning course for border guards is being implemented, other professional e-learning courses are being systematically introduced, currently 8 specialised qualification courses are available, on average 300 border guards graduate e-learning courses annually. Having in mind the continuous advancement of ICT in education contexts as well as the strategic approach of the State Border Guard College to continue the development of e-learning systems author of this article intends to describe the system of e-learning used in border guards’ training, explore and summarize the theory and best practices on using ICT in pedagogical context, educators’ roles in development and implementation of e-learning courses.

Health tourism is booming all over the world, and thermal spa tourism in Spain is a type of tourism aimed at integrating with nature, achieving sustainable development. In general, its facilities are located in areas specially protected by environmental legislation. This tourism sector attracts an increasingly wide market segment that has become more demanding and better informed and that more frequently uses the Internet to gather information. Tourists’ shopping and consumption habits are increasingly influenced by new information and communication technologies (ICTs), making these a topic of interest among academics and professionals. Website development has been shown to be an area of innovation for spa facilities, but evidence has also been found that this sector has experienced difficulty in adopting ICTs. This research sought to analyse spa websites’ usability by conducting an exploratory investigation of different websites’ contents. The results reveal that the use of new web technologies by spas is underdeveloped, although these facilities have achieved good positions in Internet search engines due to the synergistic effect of the official tourism websites. That is why most of them tell their story, detail their nature and the protection of their spaces. In this way, spas turn their websites into communication channels that convey to tourists their commitment to the environment and sustainable development.
