The aim of this chapter is to (1) present a review of some innovative communication technologies in higher education and how these are implemented for organizational, marketing, and learning processes, (2) illustrate how information and communication technologies (ICTs) may drive the introduction and use of inventive activities in education. Financial cutbacks and limited government support for institutions of higher education led to (1) either a withering effect for them that made them shrink or merge in order to survive, or (2) they had to find innovative ways to survive and attract new students and audiences as potential users while making connections with the community and firms. Current trends in higher education institutions (HEIs) are associated with supplying the student with those learning methods that can lead to skills and contribute to his/her creative and individual thought. At the same time, teaching instructors need to be aware of the know-how in the communication and information technology sectors that can be further employed.

This research presents an analysis of the active methodologies of learning in higher education and its potential, from the use of Information and Communication Technologies applied to education. It is considered the thought of authors who discuss active methodologies today and a collection of information addressed with students of Pedagogy course in the context of the Open University of Brazil. The results point out the possibilities of the use of active methodologies, combined with the use of technologies, enabling greater student engagement and qualification in the learning processes. However, it should be noted that the technologies available arouse the students’ interest or have the potential to qualify learning processes according to planning, group characteristics, and teaching mediation. The Virtual Learning Environment, among the researched resources, are considered by students as the best communication space to study, followed by the moderate use of some social networks.

During the last decades, the use of virtural environments and platforms to leverage the learning-teaching processes has increased enormously. However, there exists few virtual initiatives to discuss and promote good practices on these environtments. This paper presents the initiative Virtual USATIC (Ubicuo y Social: Aprendizaje con TIC), a conference with a totally virtual format, whose main goal is to provide a virtual environment where people involved in higher education (students, professors, etc.) can share and discuss their experiences about the use of Information and Communication Technologies in learning processes. Moreover, the conference also promotes the participation of the attendants to on-line tutorials, courses and virtual training workshops on specific topics (Digital Right Managements of material, Accesability and Usuability of materials, etc.) where all participants can learn and experience  on issues related to the conference. This iniciative started on June 2013 and has been repeated every year since then. So, different parameters to evaluate its evolution and success are described along this paper.

A new world is emerging to higher education worldwide. In Brazil, higher education took a significant turn in the last years with the substantial reductions of government investments in social justice policies. To compensate for the downturn of enrollment of new students in on-campus programs, universities started to invest heavily in distance education online programs and social media strategies. This new trend brought to the core of their strategy the necessity to develop new information and communication technologies to make the students' experience more enjoyable, to facilitate the learning process, and to increase enrollments. This process will enable professors and educators to create inspiring links with their students and within the cyberculture environment. The main objective of this chapter is to contribute to the debate of the uses of social media, cyberculture, and blockchain technology for the development of educational strategies. Therefore, it will review the existing scientific literature on social networking, social media, cyberculture, and blockchains related to Brazil.

Joining of Ukrainian educators to the European educational space requires from the higher educational establishments of Ukraine the rapid achievement of a qualitatively new level of teaching disciplines for the professional and humanitarian direction. As well as ensuring the intellectual, material, psychological and moral readiness of future specialists to work in a fast-moving world in which a modern specialist faces the need to process large arrays of information and constantly update their knowledge, skills, abilities. The authors analyze the peculiarities of students' preparation for work with information and communication technologies in the USA. Significant increase for material that today is required to process a modern student and the reduction of the time allocated for his assimilation increases the importance of independent forms of learning. Under such conditions, for today's professional training the use of the latest information technologies in the educational process becomes of special significance. The problem of introducing into the Ukrainian educational information technology space has a wide range of aspects: the use of the Internet for professional counseling for youth, the use of information technology in vocational schools, the development of distance courses, the formation of information culture, etc. The article analyzes the problem of the readiness of students of different specialties to use information and communication technologies in the educational process of a higher educational institution. Particular attention paid to modern processes of globalization and informatization of higher education as the priority trends of the development of modern Ukrainian society. Informatization of the educational process is one of the main priorities in the development of higher education, a qualitatively new stage for the whole system of higher education, a promising direction for increasing the efficiency of the process of studying at a higher educational institution.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are the major driving forces of globalised and knowledge-based societies of a new world era. They will have a profound impact on teaching and learning for two decades to come. The revolutionary change which is taking place in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), has dramatic effects on the way universities carry out their functions of teaching, learning and research, particularly on the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge. These developments pose unprecedented challenges to higher education institutions (HEIs) in developing countries particular in South Africa as South Africa is viewed as the leading country on the continent.

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are key to create sustainable higher education institutions (HEIs). Most researchers focused on the students’ perspective, especially during the online teaching caused by COVID-19; however, university teachers are often forgotten, having their opinion missing. This study’s objective was to determine the factors that contribute to the inclusion of ICTs. The research based on a comparative study through an online qualitative survey focused on the inclusion and use of ICTs in two HEIs and two different moments (pre-and post-lockdowns). There were differences regarding country and working experience (p < 0.001), being linked to the ICTs use, evaluation of obstacles, and the role given to ICTs (p < 0.05). The COVID-19 caused modifications of the teachers’ perspectives, including an improvement of the opinion of older teachers regarding the essentialness of ICTs in the teaching process (p < 0.001) and worsening their perception about their ICTs skill (p < 0.05). Additionally, an initial model focused only on the university teachers and their use of ICTs has been proposed. In conclusion, the less experienced university teachers used more ICTs, identified more greatly the problematic factors, and considered more important the ICTs, with the perception of all teachers modified by COVID-19.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in higher education for imparting easily accessible, affordable and quality higher education leading to the uplift of Malaysia. The focus of the paper is on the benefits that ICT integration in education can provide, right from breaking time and distance barriers to facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing among geographically distributed students. ICT increases the flexibility of delivery of education so that learners can access knowledge anytime and anywhere. It can influence the way students are taught and how they learn as now the processes are learner driven and not by teachers. This in turn would better prepare the learners for lifelong learning as well as to contribute to the industry. We will also analyze if ICT does indeed improve or hinder the quality of learning among higher education students. This paper reports on the changing trends in use of ICTs for instruction in higher education institutions (HEIs) and discusses a mini-case study of how ICTs are being used by lecturers in one university in Malaysia.
