Knowledge Strategic Management in the Hospital Industry

This work examines the role of knowledge in the strategic process in the hospital industry. The research method consists of multiple case studies with eight hospitals located in Brazil. We analyzed the relationship among information, knowledge and capability creation. The cases shown that knowledge dissemination is a current management practice. Nevertheless, just one case presented a clear idea of the strategic role of knowledge management. Based on this evidence, we propose a three-step theoretical model related to the strategic management of knowledge. Most of the cases analyzed are in the first stage of the proposed model. On the other hand, the hospital in the third stage presented the following characteristics: a clear strategic focus related to knowledge access, dissemination and application, a mix of formal and informal practices related to knowledge creation, and a propitious internal environment in order to develop its capabilities.

Os professores gestores dos Programas de Pós-Graduação da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro são oriundos de áreas diversas à Administração. A ausência de formação específica orientada para o desempenho das funções da gestão levou ao objetivo desta pesquisa: descrever como o professor gestor de Programa de Pós-Graduação em Instituição Federal de Ensino Superior – IFES aprende e desenvolve suas competências gerenciais, mesmo sem capacitação específica para a gestão. Para alcançá-lo na pesquisa, adotou-se metodologia qualitativa indutiva de análise de dados, nos termos de Thomas, pela qual os resultados emergem dos dados pesquisados. Da análise resultaram formas, fontes e conteúdo da aprendizagem gerencial destes docentes, e o que desejam aprender, que permitiram identificar assuntos para capacitação na gestão. Neste artigo especificamente, que tem por objetivo evidenciar a ausência de formação do docente para a função de gestor, considerou-se a capacitação para o desenvolvimento de competências e consequente desempenho das funções no serviço público federal, assim como a transição do docente para função de gestor.  As recomendações finais envolvem processos de aprendizagem na prática da gestão, necessidade de reflexão para desenvolver competências considerando a relação entre contexto social, indivíduo e suas experiências vividas. The management professors of the Post-Graduation Programs of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro come from different areas to the Administration. The lack of specific training oriented to the performance of the management functions led to the objective of this research: To describe how the professor of postgraduate program in Federal Institution of Higher Education – IFES Learns and develops their managerial skills, even without specific training for management. To reach it in the research, it was adopted a qualitative inductive methodology of data analysis, according to Thomas, by which the results emerge from the data surveyed. From the analysis resulted the forms, sources and content of managerial learning of these teachers, and what they want to learn, which made it possible to identify subjects for training in management. In this article specifically, which aims to evidence the absence of teacher training for the role of manager, it was considered the qualification for the development of competences and consequent performance of the functions in the federal public service, as well as the transition from teacher to manager. The final recommendations involve learning processes in the management practice, need for reflection to develop competencies considering the relationship between social context, individual and their lived experiences.

The relationship between ethical beliefs and tax compliance is well documented, but extant research has not explored the relationships among general ethical beliefs, contextual ethical beliefs, and tax compliance behavior. In this study we propose a model that is intended to clarify the mechanisms through which ethical beliefs impact tax compliance. In the model, contextual ethical beliefs represent the mechanism through which individuals' general ethical beliefs impact tax compliance behavior. The model is tested using participants' ethical orientations as measures of their general ethical beliefs and using participants' ethical evaluations of others' tax compliance decisions as measures of their contextual ethical beliefs. Tax compliance behavior is inferred from participants' estimates of the likelihood that they would evade. Overall, the findings from our study support the proposed model. Ethical orientations are directly related to ethical evaluations; ethical evaluations directly predict tax compliance behavior; and finally, ethical orientations are indirectly related to tax compliance behavior. That is, ethical orientations influence tax compliance behavior, but only through their influence on ethical evaluations. We believe that the proposed model provides an important contribution by providing a framework that outlines the routes through which ethical beliefs impact tax compliance.

Projekte als temporäre Form der Zusammenarbeit spielen eine wichtige Rolle im Rahmen der Formulierung und Umsetzung von Strategien. Projekte werden auch zunehmend dazu eingesetzt, Innovationen zu generieren und organisatorischen Wandel herbeizuführen. Trotz dieser hohen strategischen Bedeutung von Projekten ist die Disziplin des Projektmanagements primär auf operative Fragen ausgerichtet. In diesem Beitrag präsentieren wir daher eine Studie zu den strategischen Aspekten von Projekten. Wir haben Unternehmenslenker zur strategischen Bedeutung von Projekten befragt und untersucht, wie diese in der Unternehmensführung eingesetzt werden und wie das Topmanagement gezielt organisationale Projektmanagementkompetenz aufbauen kann. Konkret werden dabei die Bereiche Führung, Struktur und Prozesse sowie Unternehmenskultur betrachtet. Der Beitrag schließt mit der Ableitung von Empfehlungen für die Projektpraxis. Although projects are important means for strategy formulation and implementation, the discipline of project management focuses mainly on operational issues. This article therefore presents the results of a study on the strategic dimensions of projects. We asked corporate executives about the strategic role of projects and on how top management can create organizational project competence. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the cost leadership competitive strategy’s (CLCS) impact on firm performances and the mediating role of quality management (QM) practices in the context of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Design/methodology/approach A structures questionnaire data collected from 245 ISO 9000 certified MSMEs in India (65.1 per cent of response rate) have been utilised to understand the CLCS’s impact on firm performances. In the first step, the data adequacy tests were performed to check the reliability and validity of the questionnaire and survey data. After that, the partial mediating model (direct, indirect and total effect) along with structural equation modelling approach was employed to test the research hypotheses. Findings The study results revealed that no direct relationship exists between the CLCS and firm performances (0.12<β<0.13; p>0.05); however, QM practices entirely mediated their relationship (β=0.73, p<0.01). Among eight model parameters, with highest total effects on product quality improvement (β=0.6264) and process improvement (β=0.6028), the continuous improvement secured the rank 1, followed by information and analysis (β=0.2334) and supplier management (0.1839), respectively, at p<0.05. Based on the empirical results, it can be concluded that the continuous improvement via proper information and data analysis is the key to achieve CLCS’s goal in the MSMEs. Research limitations/implications The study results’ generalisation towards the large organisations is limited. The survey result findings applicability to other developing countries should also be treated with caution because the Indian Government subsidised the MSMEs selected for this study. The study results will help managers in implementing CLCS at the organisational level. The successful implementation will facilitate a competitive advantage in the local market and will motivate them to think globally. Originality/value The research observation and findings are expected to contribute to the strategic management in manufacturing industries. The study also confirms the existence of strategic management in MSMEs in a developing country. Furthermore, the major contribution is to understand the mediating role of QM practices, especially continuous improvement effect on the relationship between CLCS and firm performances in a developing country. The results indicated that the CLCS is only possible when the managers in the manufacturing sectors emphasis on the QM practices in their firms.

The aim of this article is to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between the academic fields of entrepreneurship and strategic management, based on the bibliographical references existing in these two fields. The structure of the article synthesizes the academic works existing in the two fields, seeking to generate new knowledge. The result can be used to increase the integration of these two areas of knowledge. First, it identifies apparent relationships and then focuses more in detail on some of the most important intersections, including strategic management in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups, recognizing the central role of the entrepreneur. The content and the process of strategic management are discussed, as well as its important link to the business plan. To conclude, clues are indicated for future investigations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible moderating role of organisational characteristics (organisational structure, management style and decision-making style) in the relationship between strategy and organisational performance among large construction organisations in South Africa. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted a quantitative research approach using a questionnaire survey to obtain data from 72 large construction organisations in South Africa. Using hierarchical multiple regression, the paper examines the relationship between the constructs discussed in the study. Findings The internal characteristics of the organisation form the vital basis for achieving optimal performance. The results obtained from the analysis revealed that decision-making style directly influences the measure of organisational effectiveness, while it could also be inferred that organisational characteristics partly moderate the relationship between competitive strategy and organisational performance. The findings indicate that internal characteristics is one of the means through which organisational strategic factors and contextual aspects are organised to achieve greater organisational performance levels. Originality/value The findings have theoretical implications for strategic management literature in construction as it extends the scope of research on strategic management from assessing a set of individual management practices to evaluating a complex mechanism that connects internal characteristics and competitive advantage. It is believed that this study will contribute positively to the role of organisational characteristics in the competitive strategy-performance relationships in large construction organisations in South Africa and to the ongoing discussion on emerging strategic management issues in construction.

The present study aims to discuss the strategic role of gastronomy in destinations. The study utilised the three theoretical foundations of strategic management, namely Resource-Based View (RBV), Emergent Strategy (ES) and Positioning Strategy (PS). Several concepts from the field of gastronomy were used, such as gastronomic identity, tourist behaviours (motivation, experience, consumption), a sense of place, and food image. Utilizing this multi-disciplinary literature, the present study provides an integrative review of developing a model explaining the strategic role of gastronomy in tourism destinations. The predictions of the model are supported by the conceptual and empirical findings of earlier studies.

<p>A unified model of positive emotional expression, based on existing research, is presented. The proposed model is broader in scope, than a purely cognitive model (see Fig. 1); incorporating pro-social states can be induced directly through adaptive perceptual processes such as mirror-neuronal mechanisms, but whereby state expressions are modulated by adaptive <i>fundamental cognitive evaluations</i> (FCEs). It is proposed that these FCEs work in cohort to elicit emotional experience and prime the expressional potentiality of related affective states that share FCE dimensions. So that an individual experiencing kindness would be more likely to be disposed to feeling compassion or muditā (vicarious joy) - enabling appropriate onward social interaction.</p> <p>It is proposed that the activation of FCEs are modulated by socio-cultural schema, including attitudinal scripts shared within a culture and reflected in heterogeneous trait patterns by cultural/geographical area. The role of mindful decentring from such schema, and the onward effect on FCE expression, is explored; specifically, in relation to states associated with Self-Determination Theory’s (SDT) motivational areas of competency, autonomy and relatedness. </p> <p>A speculative model exploring the relationship between SDT, positive states; key aspect of mindfulness and HEXACO traits is presented as a spur for future discussion and study (see Fig. 2).</p>

The study conceptualized a relationship between technological innovation and strategic leadership on competitive advantage. Technological innovation has been posited to influence performance competitive advantage however; this position has been largely tautological and hence required more empirical testing. Although implied, the role of strategic leadership in the relationship between technological innovation and competitive advantage has been largely lacking. The study, therefore, specifically sought to determine the moderating role of strategic leadership on the relationship between technological innovation and competitive advantage of large telecommunication enterprises (LTEs) in Kenya. Significant transformations have been evident in Kenya&rsquo;s telecommunication industry for the last two decades, which has resulted in intense competition, and technological innovation has become the new face of competition among these firms. The target population comprised all 83 large telecommunication enterprises in Kenya and census was used. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in data analysis. Strategic leadership was found to have a positive and significant influence on the relationship between technological innovation and competitive advantage. It is deduced from the findings that strategic leadership would affect the strength of the relationship between technological innovation and competitive advantage. This can be attributed to the importance of organizational leadership&rsquo;s role as decision makers and key enablers of technological innovation among large telecommunication enterprises. The study presented notable implications on the policy framework, the strategic management practice, and theory implications in the telecommunication industry and beyond. At policy level, the Government of Kenya would benefit from the study by ensuring that policy makers and regulatory authorities in the telecommunication sector formulate policies that would promote technological innovation and strategic leadership for enhancing competitive advantage. Managerial practitioners may consider institutionalizing innovation and leadership by creating the requisite direction and controls that enable the emergence of innovation and value creation for sustainable competitive advantage. The study findings&rsquo; implications further extended, supported, and added value on the theories adopted by the study.
