Preparing Online Instructors

This chapter discusses methods for supporting the instructor in the development of strong learner-learner interactions. In this chapter, we present a brief overview of the importance of social learning theories and existing research that support learner-learner interaction as an important aspect of learning. Next, we discuss the multiple factors, and their complex interaction on the instructor’s ability to support learner-learner interaction. Additionally, we report and discuss findings from a qualitative study examining the use of an ecological assessment tool to evaluate an online course’s ability to support learner-learner interaction. The chapter concludes with suggestions for improved approaches to faculty development to support learner-learner interaction.

Online education is no longer a peripheral phenomenon in higher education: over one-third of faculty have taught or developed an online course. As institutions of higher education expand their online education offerings, administrators need to recognize that supporting faculty through the use of incentives and through effective faculty development programs for online instruction is important to the improvement of the quality of educational programs. This quantitative study used an online survey to investigate the types and frequency of faculty development programs for online instruction at institutions with an established teaching and learning development unit (TLDU). The average TLDU offered about fifteen different types of faculty development programs, the most common being websites, technical services, printed materials, and consultation with instructional design experts.

ABSTRAK Indonesia dikenal dengan negara yang memiliki beragam suku, budaya, dan bahasa. Pada tahun 2010, data jumlah penduduk Indonesia yang paling terakhir menyatakan jumlah penduduk Indonesia sebesar 237,56 juta jiwa dengan 85.1% nya beragama Islam dan 288.405 penduduknya berprofesi sebagai seorang perawat. Pemahaman perawat tentang keperawatan transkultural saat ini sangatlah dibutuhkan. Agama, salah satu dari tujuh faktor yang menurut Leininger memiliki andil besar dalam mempengaruhi perilaku dan sikap para perawat maupun para klien. Simanjuntak (2011) berdasarkan studi kualitatif mengutarakan 13 karakteristik yang perlu di validasi sebagai karakteristik dari perawat Islam saat melakukan perawatan kepada klien. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk memvalidasi butir-butir gambaran identitas profesional perawat Islam Indonesia melalui rancang bangun dari lembar kaji. Desain dalam penelitian ini adalah validasi kuesioner terhadap faktor rancang bangun, dimensi dan construct validity. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan melakukan pilot study terlebih dahulu di Rumah Sakit Cibabat dan Rumah Sakit Imanuel dengan kemudian meminta responden untuk mengisi kuesioner serta memberikan komentar terhadap setiap butir-butir pernyataan, Data aktual berasal dari Rumah Sakit Santosa Bandung, Rumah Sakit Meilia Cibubur, dan Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah Koja Jakarta dengan cara meminta responden untuk mengisi kuesioner. Sampel dipilih dengan menggunakan metode snowballing kepada perawat Islam Indonesia yang bekerja di Bandung dan Jakarta. Data dianalisa dengan Cronbach α, didapatkan hasil pada uji validitas terhadap 13 karakteristik identitas profesional perawat Islam Indonesia masing-masing memiliki nilai Cronbach α >0,70. Hasil penelitian ini menyarankan agar perawat Islam Indonesia dapat menjadi perawat yang profesional dalam mengkaji diri agar dapat menuju keperawatan lintas budaya yang berkompetensi.   Kata Kunci: Validasi, Identitas Profesional, Perawat Islam Indonesia.   ABSTRACT Indonesia is known as a country with diverse in ethnic, cultural, and dialect. The population of Indonesian as declared in 2010 is 237.56 million, with 85.1% of them are Muslims and 288.405 people work as nurses. Religion is one of the seven factors that according Leininger determined the behavior and attitudes of nurses and clients. Therefore, understanding of transcultural nursing is imperatively necessary. In a qualitative study, Simanjuntak (2011) states 13 characteristics of Indonesian Islam nurse professional identity need to be validated. This study conducted to validate the grains picture of Indonesian Islam nurses professional identity through the design of identity assessment tool. This study validates the identity assessment tool, its design, dimensions and the construct validity. Pilot study was done in the Cibabat Hospital and Immanuel Hospital, and the actual data were collected from Santosa Bandung Hospital, Meilia Cibubur Hospital, and the Koja General Hospital in Jakarta. Samples were selected using snow-ball method among Islam nurses who work in Bandung and Jakarta. The result obtained on the validity of the 13 characteristics of professional identity of Indonesian Islam professional nurses with the value of Cronbach α> 0.70. The results of this study suggest that Indonesian Islam nurses can become a professional nurse in assessing themselves in order to lead a cross-cultural nursing competence. Lewy body disease (LBD) is a devastating condition with cognitive and physical deficits that pose a challenge to family caregivers. The purpose of this study was to identify the needs and concerns of family caregivers of persons with LBD. A convenience sample of LBD caregivers were interviewed regarding their caregiving needs, concerns, strategies, and advice. A content analysis approach was used to organize data into themes from an existing needs and concerns framework. Findings included the need for more information about the disease, strategies for managing LBD-related emotions and behaviors, support and assistance with physical and instrumental care, and strategies for managing one’s own personal responses to caregiving. Findings highlight the need for a Lewy body specific caregiver assessment tool and future caregiver interventions.

Objective: To explore the factors perceived to affect rehabilitation assessment and referral practices for patients with stroke. Design: Qualitative study using data from focus groups analysed thematically and then mapped to the Theoretical Domains Framework. Setting: Eight acute stroke units in two states of Australia. Subjects: Health professionals working in acute stroke units. Interventions: Health professionals at all sites had participated in interventions to improve rehabilitation assessment and referral practices, which included provision of copies of an evidence-based decision-making rehabilitation Assessment Tool and pathway. Results: Eight focus groups were conducted (32 total participants). Reported rehabilitation assessment and referral practices varied markedly between units. Continence and mood were not routinely assessed (4 units), and people with stroke symptoms were not consistently referred to rehabilitation (4 units). Key factors influencing practice were identified and included whether health professionals perceived that use of the Assessment Tool would improve rehabilitation assessment practices (theoretical domain ‘social and professional role’); beliefs about outcomes from changing practice such as increased equity for patients or conversely that changing rehabilitation referral patterns would not affect access to rehabilitation (‘belief about consequences’); the influence of the unit’s relationships with other groups including rehabilitation teams (‘social influences’ domain) and understanding within the acute stroke unit team of the purpose of changing assessment practices (‘knowledge’ domain). Conclusion: This study has identified that health professionals’ perceived roles, beliefs about consequences from changing practice and relationships with rehabilitation service providers were perceived to influence rehabilitation assessment and referral practices on Australian acute stroke units.

This qualitative short report considers the viability of the use of rubrics or alternative methods to assess writing in Asia and the Middle East. The background of learning theories, assessment types, and self-assessment literature provides a foundation for further discussion of the appropriate use of rubrics, including the prioritization of criterion, the quality of scoring, the impact of organizational features on scoring, the influence of bias, and the best application of rubric assessment. Relevant points for further study are identified, such as differentiation in research between generalized analytical rating systems and rubric assessment with specific, empirical criterion. The contradictory research regarding the advantages and disadvantages of rubric assessment in comparison with holistic assessment are of particular and crucial interest for global pedagogy. Many of the reviewed Western articles excluded Asian perspectives- except for China- and thus present a limited understanding of social and educational compatibility with new assessments and rubric assessments in particular. The discussion identifies patterns and points of contention and seeks to explore viewpoints rather than limit the scope of inquiry and consideration thus noting that relevant literature suggests that with appropriate teacher training, teachers may appropriately use rubrics as a formative assessment tool for writing in Asia and the Middle East.

Women in India have been victim of violence and discrimination since ages but this aggression has also led to empowerment of women in some cases. This study deals with study of such aggressive women who transformed their aggression to empowerment. Grounded theory methodology has been used to explore and understand the process and role of education in transformation. This study focuses on route aggression takes and role of education in channelizing the aggressive energy so as to lead to empowerment. General Aggression Model (GAM) given by Anderson and Bushman (2002) is a dynamic, social, cognitive developmental model which draws heavily on social-cognitive and social learning theories. Aggression depends on how an individual perceives and interprets his/her environment and people there in, this model has been revised and a new model has been devised namely General Aggression Model in Education or GAME, which shows path towards empowerment from aggression.

This survey covers models of how agents update behaviors and beliefs using information conveyed through social connections. The chapter begins with sequential social learning models, in which each agent makes a decision once and for all after observing a subset of prior decisions; the discussion is organized around the concepts of diffusion and aggregation of information. Next, the chapter presents the DeGroot framework of average-based repeated updating, whose long- and medium-run dynamics can be completely characterized in terms of measures of network centrality and segregation. Finally, the chapter turns to various models of repeated updating that feature richer optimizing behavior, and concludes by urging the development of network learning theories that can deal adequately with the observed phenomenon of persistent disagreement.
