Knowledge Sharing in Virtual and Networked Organisations in Different Organisational and National Cultures

In today’s competitive business environment, increasingly large numbers of organisations use virtual distributed teams in their operations. This chapter provides a basis for discussion and analysis of knowledge sharing in culturally diverse networked organisations. Examining the different cultural values and perceptions related to knowledge sharing, we aim at making the human and cultural dynamics that bear on knowledge sharing and knowledge management success more explicit. The objectives are to foster an effective knowledge-sharing culture within virtual distributed teams. The chapter provides mechanisms for understanding the potential for conflict, for knowledge sharing, and building of trust among culturally diverse team members. Guidelines for successful knowledge sharing in the global environment are developed providing indications of the expected benefits for the organisation and the individuals involved. An outline of future trends and further work complete the chapter.

The objective of using the CODE model is to raise awareness of the cultural values and attitudes in distributed teams and in combination with the life-cycle to ensure an effective process quality management and foster a knowledge sharing culture within distributed team members.

Today, people are suddenly forced to interact remotely due to the pandemic, while companies around the world are beginning to accept the fact that teams don't really have to work in offices to get the expected results. That is why distributed teams are increasingly becoming the norm in various industries, delivering results, and saving corporate resources. At the same time, new realities have not only changed the way companies work but also changed people's thinking to adapt to working in distributed teams. Especially now, the knowledge and skills of employees are intellectual capital for companies, which is fast becoming a new icon of the economic value of the company. Due to this fact, project workers, those who want to succeed in the new business environment, should learn to work effectively in distributed teams. This will require strengthening soft skills such as leadership, commitment, etc. The article considers the economic and social preconditions for distributed project teams trend formation. The literature on the topic of the distributed team’s efficiency was analysed. Thus, one of the factors influencing the team work efficiency related to the soft skills maturity level among distributed project team members was distinguished. The unified list of soft skills based on world experience is determined. The current state and main trends in the work of project teams are studied, based on which the methodological tools for assessing the maturity level of the project team’s soft skills by project managers at the enterprise were proposed. The levels of soft skills maturity, as well as assessment parameters of each of soft skills, are revealed. The practice of applying the unified soft skills list on the example of a distributed team in the Ukrainian company was evaluated, based on which conclusions about the possibility of its use were made.

Due to the competitive and rapidly changing nature of the external business environment, university students must acquire the ability to cooperate, share knowledge, and enhance team effectiveness and learning in the workplaces of the future. Consequently, the design of business courses in higher education merits further discussion. Based on the notions of team-based learning and flipped classrooms, we proposed a business course model that consisted of three main phases: before-class, in-class, and after-class online course activities. After implementing the course models in two business courses at two public universities in Taiwan, a survey based on social learning and social exchange theories was distributed. The data collected from 218 undergraduate business students were analysed. The findings reveal that value in team members’ contributions is positively associated with team trust and each has a significant impact on knowledge sharing and team effectiveness. Knowledge sharing played a key role in this learning context and was a significant mediator between perceptions of value in team members’ contributions and team effectiveness, as well as between team trust and team effectiveness. In addition, team effectiveness was a benefit to individual learning in these classes.

This paper reports an exploratory case study that used boundary theory to investigate the impact of organisational virtualisation on work units. Specifically, the research analysed the transition in a public sector organisation from permanent, co-located teams to temporary virtual teams and its impact on team boundary properties and activities. The study contributes to existing knowledge of virtual teams and virtualisation processes in several ways. The findings suggest that, contrary to existing thinking, rather than removing organisational and institutional boundaries, virtualisation increases the number and complexity of such boundaries at the work unit level. The findings also indicate that the chronic lack of knowledge sharing on virtual teams is, in addition to difficulties of establishing interpersonal trust, due to a lack of trust in the technology as an appropriate medium for sensitive knowledge sharing. The implications of the study for practice are that efficiency gains from organisational virtualisation can easily be offset by the need to invest additional resources and team members’ time into cultivating a greater number of transient relationships at a distance. Organisations also need to invest in opportunities for face-to-face interaction where sensitive knowledge sharing is a critical resource for a virtual team.

Purpose There is a growing consensus among human resources researchers and professionals that a participative environment can enhance job satisfaction, commitment, employee motivation and productivity. Moreover, globalization has caused that organizations operate in a huge number of culturally diverse countries. Studies suggest that understanding national culture as a prerequisite to implementing management initiatives such as employee participation in decision-making (PDM) acquires special interest. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of cultural values on PDM in European organisations. The fulfilment of this purpose entails the following specific objectives: to measure the level of PDM in each European country; to examine the relationship between the six cultural dimensions proposed by Hofstede in 2010 (power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, masculinity/feminity, long term/short term and indulgence) and the PDM level of the organisations studied; and to define the national cultural profile of organisations that promote PDM the most and those that do the least. Design/methodology/approach One factor analysis were applied to test the proposed hypotheses on a sample of almost 25,000 workers in 31 European countries (from the 6th European Working Conditions Survey) to identify direct employee PDM corresponding to each organisation included in the sample. Multiple linear regression was performed to test the hypotheses about the relationship between PDM and Hofstede culture values. Previously, a correlation analysis was performed between the independent variables of the regression model to examine the possibility of bias in coefficient significance tests because of multicollinearity. Finally, it presented a ranking of the analysed countries according to their PDM, including the value of their cultural dimensions. This information could be used to define the cultural profile of European participative countries. Findings The findings advance our understanding of how culture influencing on employee PDM in European organisations. Indulgence and masculinity are the most influent cultural dimensions. Moreover, results provide the cultural profile of those European countries that promote PDM the most and the least. Research limitations/implications The research is based only on the perceptions of workers about their PDM but does not consider the managers’ opinion. Moreover, the document analyses the national culture as a single value shared by all the inhabitants of a country without considering the subcultures existing in it. Furthermore, future research should be conducted to analyse the influence of other conditions (such as activity sector, company size and owner public or private) on PDM–culture relationship. Practical implications This study can be aid to managers in understanding the cultural profile of the country where their companies operate and the cultural differences between their employees. In this manner, they could implement the appropriate practices to promote the direct participation of employees in decision-making. Originality/value To broaden the knowledge, this is the first study investigating PDM across six cultural dimensions. The globalized and international business environment generates new challenges to multinational organizations that could pursue to increase direct PDM to get its benefits (a higher efficiency, performance, motivation, commitment and loyalty by the employee) in culturally diverse societies. The cultural values of the countries where organizations are located affect direct employee PDM. In particular, in this study, this occurs primarily with the variables masculinity, long-term orientation and indulgence. Moreover, this is a finding of high relevance because there is no empirical evidence in the effect of indulgence and long-term orientation on PDM because they were added later to Hofstede’s values.

Academic work increasingly involves creating digital tools with interdisciplinary teams distributed across institutions and roles. The negative impacts of distributed work are described at length in technical communication scholarship, but such impacts have not yet been realized in collaborative practices. By integrating attention to their core ethical principles, best practices, and work patterns, the authors are developing an ethical, sustainable approach to team building that they call constructive distributed work. This article describes their integrated approach, documents the best practices that guide their research team, and models the three-dimensional thinking that helps them develop sustainable digital tools and ensure the consistent professional development of all team members.

This paper investigates the perceptions of members of 43 culturally diverse global virtual teams, with respect to team processes and outcomes. Despite widespread acknowledgement of the challenges presented by cultural differences in the context of global teams, little is known about the effect of these differences on team dynamics in the absence of face-to-face interaction. Using a student-based sample, we study the relationship between global virtual team members’ individualistic and collectivistic orientations and their evaluations of trust, interdependence, communication and information sharing, and conflict during the team task. Our results suggest that a collectivist orientation is associated with more favorable impressions regarding global virtual team processes and that cultural differences are not concealed by virtual means of communication.

ABSTRACTThis article investigates the impact of cross-level interplay between team members’ and their leaders’ goal orientations (learning, performance approach, and performance avoidance) on knowledge sharing using samples from design teams in two companies in China. Our results show that team leaders’ learning goal orientation plays a critical moderating role. Specifically, team leaders’ learning goal orientation strengthens the positive relationship between team members’ learning orientation and knowledge sharing; positively moderates the relationship between team members’ performance approach orientation and knowledge sharing; and weakens the negative relationship between team members’ performance avoidance orientation and knowledge sharing. Team leaders’ performance approach orientation demonstrates a positive moderating effect when there is congruence between the performance approach orientation of leaders and members. Finally, team leaders’ performance avoidance orientation negatively moderates the relationship between team members’ learning and performance approach orientation on knowledge sharing. This research enhances our understanding of the conditions under which knowledge sharing occurs among team members, using the lens of Trait Activation Theory.
