Challenges in Sharing Computer and Network Logs

It is desirable for many reasons to share information, particularly computer and network logs. Researchers need it for experiments, incident responders need it for collaborative security, and educators need this data for real world examples. However, the sensitive nature of this information often prevents its sharing. Anonymization techniques have been developed in recent years that help reduce risk and navigate the trade-offs between privacy, security and the need to openly share information. This chapter looks at the progress made in this area of research over the past several years, identifies the major problems left to solve and sets a roadmap for future research.

This review reflects back on the progress that has been made in infant pain research over the past 20 years and how the research has influenced (or has failed to influence) the attitudes and practices of health professionals about infant pain. Progress in understanding of infant pain neurobiology, treatment, and measurement are discussed, and new directions for future research are proposed.

During the past decade, considerable progress has been made in our understanding of the mechanism underlying sensitization of the heart to the arrhythmogenic action of catecholamines by hydrocarbon anesthetics. This review includes the following: a brief discussion on the concepts of the mechanisms of induction of cardiac arrhythmias; recent studies on sensitization with special reference to the primary locus of this action and the principal mechanisms involved; and the contributions made by microelectrode studies on various types of cardiac tissue and the importance of cardiodynamic effects. In addition, atrioventricular conduction studies using bundle of His preparations are described. Drug interaction between anesthetic agents, muscle relaxants, and other drugs are discussed. Suggestions for future research and a section of summary and conclusions are included.

Current generation real-world data sets processed through machine learning are imbalanced by nature. This imbalanced data enables the researchers with a challenging scenario in the context of perdition for both the machine learning and data mining algorithms. It is observed from the past research studies most of the imbalanced data sets consists of the major classes and minor classes and the major class leads the minor class. Several standards and hybrid prediction algorithms are proposed in various application domains but in most of the real-time data sets analyzed in the studies are imbalanced by nature thereby affecting the accuracy of the prediction. This paper presents a systematic survey of the past research studies to analyze intrinsic data characteristics and techniques utilized for handling class-imbalanced data. In addition, this study reveals the research gaps, trends and patterns in existing studies and discusses briefly on future research directions

Many scholars are enthusiastic about the potential learning opportunities present in the sandbox-style gaming environment, Minecraft. In the following case study, the authors explored the use of Minecraft in a high school literature class and the presentation of characterization and plot in three student-made machinima, or films made in the game world. The authors demonstrate that Minecraft offers a unique opportunity for students to display their creativity and understanding of concepts in ways that are more feasible than if they were attempted in the “real” world. It is also relevant to point out that the epistemology associated Minecraft is constructionist in its nature, which implicates a different style of instruction than is typically employed in the U.S. classroom. The authors pose some questions about the diffusion of games like Minecraft in the future, based on their discussion of similar technologies in the past.

Generality, representation, and control have been the central issues in machine recognition. Model-based recognition is the search for consistent matches of model and image features. We present a comparative framework for the evaluation of different approaches, particularly those of ACRONYM, RAF, and Ikeuchi et al. The strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are discussed and compared, and remedies are suggested. Various trade-offs made in the implementations are analyzed with respect to the systems' intended task domains. The requirements for a versatile recognition system are motivated. Several directions for future research are pointed out.

Purpose By outlining the evolution of brand management research over the past 25 years, as reported in the Journal of Product and Brand Management (JPBM), this paper aims to analyze the changes in the way branding has been approached in research, highlight the current challenges the discipline faces and suggest future research avenues that will hopefully further enrich brand management knowledge. Design/methodology/approach This paper includes internal historical literature review and commentary. Findings After a thorough analysis of the journal’s content, the contribution that the JPBM has made in the development of brand management knowledge over the past 25 years is highlighted. Eight major shifts in brand management research and thought, and three overarching difficulties and challenges, are identified. Research limitations/implications By solely focusing on the contributions published in the journal, by no means this review is exhaustive and includes all the contributions to the discipline. Its contribution is limited to the analysis of the work, and the evolution of brand management thinking, recorded in the JPBM. Originality/value The paper highlights the evolution of brand management thought and presents imperatives and challenges to guide future research in brand management.

Virtual heritage (VH) is one of the few domains to adopt immersive reality technologies at early stages, with a significant number of studies employing the technologies for various application themes. More specifically, virtual reality has persisted as a de facto immersive reality technology for virtual reconstruction and virtual museums. In recent years, however, mixed reality (MxR) has attracted attention from the VH community following the introduction of new devices, such as Microsoft HoloLens, to the technological landscape of immersive reality. Two variant perceptions of MxR have been observed in the literature over the past two decades. First, MxR is perceived as an umbrella/collective term for a virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) environment. Second, it is also presented as a distinctive form of immersive reality that enables merging virtual elements with their real-world counterparts. These perceptions influence our choice of immersive reality technology, interaction design, and implementation, and the overall objective of VH applications. To address these concerns, this chapter attempts to answer two critical questions: (1) what MxR from VH perspective is and (2) whether MxR is just a form of immersive reality that serves as a bridge to connect the real world with a virtual one or a fusion of both that neither the real nor the virtual world would have meaning without a contextual relationship and interaction with each other. To this end, this chapter will review VH applications and literature from the past few years and identify how MxR is presented. It will also suggest how the VH community can benefit from MxR and discuss limitations in existing technology and identify some areas and direction for future research in the domain.

Organic photomultiplication photodetectors have attracted considerable research interest due to their extremely high external quantum efficiency and corresponding high detectivity. Significant progress has been made in the aspects of their structural design and performance improvement in the past few years. There are two types of organic photomultiplication photodetectors, which are made of organic small molecular compounds and polymers. In this paper, the research progress in each type of organic photomultiplication photodetectors based on the trap assisted carrier tunneling effect is reviewed in detail. In addition, other mechanisms for the photomultiplication processes in organic devices are introduced. Finally, the paper is summarized and the prospects of future research into organic photomultiplication photodetectors are discussed.
