Enhancing Traditional ATP Functionality in Open Source ERP Systems

Available-to-promise (ATP) procedures in today’s enterprise information systems usually involve a simple search for available or planned inventory of a particular product in a particular depot at a particular time. In this article, ATP is viewed as a dynamic and more complex problem of deciding whether to accept a customer order request given the available inventory and planned production plus the remaining production capacity and business rules for covering demand from certain customer classes, for given products and time window. Whenever this is not possible, the production schedule is modified, by utilizing “reserved” capacity and resources, to cover extra demand. A prototype tool has been designed and implemented based on this approach, that can be easily integrated into existing ERP systems enhancing their functionality and increasing the level of customer service. The elaborated prototype is pilot tested in a case company in the food industry and is loosely integrated within the Open Source Compiere 2, ERP system extended to handle manufacturing. The prototype produces almost real time results on modern commodity-off-theshelf computers, thus enhancing sales personnel performance and efficiency and increasing the level of customer service and satisfaction.

The enterprise resource planning (ERP) software market has been growing at a very fast pace over the last few years and has been predicted to keep growing rapidly in the long term. ERP systems have the potential to integrate seamlessly organizational processes using common shared information and data flows. Enterprises recently tend to implement their new enterprise information systems like ERP system in order to gain their competitive advantages and bring up their business efficiency, but the efficiency gained from this new implementation is not quite clear and is difficult to be identified. This paper presents a case study of ERP systems implementation in international construction materials procurement and purchasing company in Latvia. Specifically, this paper briefly described the business processes involved in the manufacturing and construction company and illustrated how ERP systems could be implemented and the efficiency of management system consequently enhanced. For an international company, the headquarters’ successful experience can provide a guideline to assist the local office to implement new system effectively and efficiently. ERP information system supports manufacturing process and construction object related information. This paper also argues that ERP systems are an increasingly important source of organizational change with major implications for the organization and management of work.


This chapter further develops and generalises findings from the authors’ July 2008 paper in the International Journal of Enterprise Information Systems (IJEIS) by adding organisational issues such as business process reengineering (BPR). The authors argue that enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are complex management tools that impose standard business processes from larger manufacturing firms. The authors test whether these systems can be adapted effectively to more simplified organisations such as small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The authors found that SMEs tend to have a high perceived level of satisfaction when using these complex tools, independent of size or sector. However, they cannot clearly establish that SMEs having applied BPR while implementing an ERP system are more satisfied than those that did not.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are widely used in most industries today because of the benefits they offer: improved integration of business processes, improved cost control, improved decision making, improved customer service, and improved profitability. Although much IS research has been published concerning acceptance of enterprise systems, adoption issues, or critical success factors in implementing an ERP system, little research has been presented that focuses on the ERP usage behavior. The purpose of this research is to to extend the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model in order to predict the acceptance of ERP systems among its users in the United States. This study will potentially benefit Information Technology (IT) professionals in a global environment. IT professionals can design acceptance strategies that promote ERP usage ultimately.

The ERP is an organizational strategy of integration of production and operations, human resources management, financial management and asset management, focused on continuous balancing and optimization of enterprise resources through a specialized integrated software application package that provides a common model of data and processes for all areas of activity. An ERP system is a specific software package that implements the ERP strategy. Today, many modern companies use ERP-systems as an effective means of automation and acceleration of business processes. Most ERP-systems have impressive functionality such as maintenance of design and technological specifications, demand management and formation of sales and production plans, material requirements planning, inventory and procurement management, production capacity planning, financial functions, project management functions. However, due to the fact that the ERP-system combines almost all information processes of the enterprise and carries out storage, processing and transmission of data, the risk of information threats increases, which in turn entails large losses for the company. After analyzing the structure of the ERP-system, the following protection methods can be identified: protection of network infrastructure; database protection; application server protection. Based on the above, we can conclude that the complexity of the ERP-system increases the risk of information leaks. To ensure the information security of the ERP system, it is necessary to apply a large number of methods and means of protection, which in turn means an increase in costs and a decrease in the productivity of the enterprise. Therefore, one of the main tasks of the company at any level is to maintain a balance between safety and performance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the use of a hybrid enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, combining an ERP system with enterprise social software (ESS). The study will provide a critical assessment of the implementation of this process technology. Design/methodology/approach Multiple case studies of organisations based in China were conducted to understand the use of ERP systems in different contexts. Following an evaluation of the context of each ERP implementation (within-case analysis) the research draws a cross-case conclusion that defines the nature of a hybrid ERP system and then synthesises the propositions related to the benefits and challenges of implementation. Findings The authors find that a hybrid ERP system is able to support efficiency in business process management and also provide a flexible response to changes in business requirements. It does this by allowing for the continued use of informal processes that cannot be incorporated into the ERP system. Practical implications This research indicates how ERP systems in conjunction with ESS can provide a flexible response to changing business requirements and increase collaboration within the organisation. Key lessons include the need to perform informal activities under the guidance of managers and provide clear boundaries for the implementation of informal activities. Originality/value This study has found that the use of case studies can provide a valuable insight into the use of a hybrid ERP system from the perspective of its use within the organisation as a work system that requires an assessment of the context within which organisational members perform their work.

Successful implementation of ERP systems should take full advantage of the access to information, but not be constrained by many of the deficiencies associated with infinite capacity scheduling methodologies. In this paper an algorithm is developed which improves the performance of the ERP system. Lot sizing decisions based on capacity availability are used as an instrument to integrate more effectively capacity requirements planning (CRP) and Material Requirements Planning (MRP). MRP is a planning tool for a sub-set of manufacturing system specially in hierarchal multi-product, multi-period and multi-stage production planning and inventory control system. The Vehicle used for this integration is planned order release (POR) quantity. The algorithm requires minimal deviation from the MRP logic. In this sequential process MRP first issues the action notices and then the algorithm analyses the capacity situation in the work centers. The algorithm scans all planned order release quantities of lower level items in the action bucket before orders are released to the shop. For each item a delta value is computed identifying the degree orders are contributing to capacity problems. This delta is specific to each POR. The POR causing the highest overload and the one passing through the lowest utilized work centers are selected for a lot size decrease, respectively, an increase. After identifying the candidates, a series of checks analyses the suitability of the candidates for that change. The planned order release quantities of more items can be performed. Projected capacity profile after iteration will be updated and capacity requirements over a short duration are smoothed. The experiments are performed with MAP/3000 as a simulation model for this study. The developed algorithm is added to MAP/3000 as additional subroutines. The design of the experiments consists of a base test identifying the significance of different environmental parameters of MRP systems and a main test which performs a detailed evaluation. The results are evaluated using analysis of variance techniques. Most ERP systems built on the historical development of MRP and CRP systems, and the assumption of infinite capacity is affecting the performance of those systems badly. This paper is presenting an algorithm to smooth capacity problems by using the existed capacity.

This paper describes the design and evaluation of an ERP system design course, which utilizes experiential learning theory along with open ERP sys-tem to provide the students with a holistic and cost-free learning environ-ment. The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the ERP se-lection and implementation life-cycle. When designing the pedagogical framework, the goal was to help students, especially those with little to no working experience to acquire the necessary knowledge, and develop the practical technical experience. Additionally, it was necessary to help students appreciate the depth and issues involved in the ERP system selection and implementation life-cycle. Lectures, case discussions, system demos with interactive labs, and group projects were used all together to enable in depth learning of the proposed topics. We focus on open source ERP system to provide the students with the required hands-on experience, and also to demonstrate that such approach can be utilized even by low resource universities. This paper includes details of the proposed framework. The proposed framework was taught and evaluated in a 1-semester graduate level course at the university of Jeddah, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The course design was in-directly assessed using a survey, and the results revealed the positive impact that the proposed framework had on students’ learning outcomes. The results of the assessment support that experiential based learning using open source ERP systems can lead to improved learning outcome.

Contemporary ERP systems have various applications. Today, they are successfully used both in material value adding areas and in services rendering / work performance areas. Taking into account the business’ specific features is crucial for selection of software that will automate the activities of each organizational structural unit and the enterprise as a whole. The task of selecting and implementing contemporary ERP systems for business management requires conducting detailed analysis to identify the advantages and drawbacks of their application, as well as determine economic benefits from application of this information and analytical system. In this research, we relied on methods of economic and comparative analysis and used a systemic approach. The main purpose of research is finding arguments proving the practical value of purchasing an ERP system. The paper presents this research containing information on economic benefits that an enterprise could gain after ERP system implementation. According to the author, using a contemporary information and analytical system makes it possible to solve one of the most important tasks – improve business reliability and controllability through application of contemporary information technologies, which is particularly relevant as enterprise management procedures are growing ever more complicated.
