This chapter explores the concept of space policy and sheds light on its importance in understanding the nature and evolution of space activities and programs. More specifically, this chapter seeks to offer an introduction on how space policy can be defined and understood, followed by an overview of the main current trajectories of space policies of both national actors as well as international and intergovernmental institutions. Finally, this chapter formulates some conclusions regarding the future potential avenues of space policy and describes how these scenarios could impact the future of human activities and behaviour in space.

AbstractLunar surface is, in spite of disadvantages on payload compared with those in the distant orbits, extremely attractive for future astronomical observations with large and complicated observing instruments. The Moon will provide firm and large base, very stable temperature and low background in some selected sites. In addition, the aids of human activities on the Moon can be expected in the near future. We have been discussing the small but realistic steps toward the future Moon-based astronomy, as part of Japanese lunar exploration plans with HI rockets. The fundamental Policy of Japan’s Space Development which was approved by Space Activities Commission in 1996 described that Japan will continuously promote unmanned lunar exploration and study the feasibility of a systematic exploration program for science and possible activities on the Moon, under a phase-by-phase approach. The plan includes a possibility of astronomical observations on the lunar surface. Some pilot-type astronomical plans, starting from very small-size telescopes in optical/IR and mm-wave etc. are under discussion. We report here on the general background, discussion including proposed plans, and steps toward the future moon-based observatories.

AbstractThis research quantitatively and qualitatively analyzes the factors responsible for the water level variations in Lake Toba, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. According to several studies carried out from 1993 to 2020, changes in the water level were associated with climate variability, climate change, and human activities. Furthermore, these studies stated that reduced rainfall during the rainy season due to the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the continuous increase in the maximum and average temperatures were some of the effects of climate change in the Lake Toba catchment area. Additionally, human interventions such as industrial activities, population growth, and damage to the surrounding environment of the Lake Toba watershed had significant impacts in terms of decreasing the water level. However, these studies were unable to determine the factor that had the most significant effect, although studies on other lakes worldwide have shown these factors are the main causes of fluctuations or decreases in water levels. A simulation study of Lake Toba's water balance showed the possibility of having a water surplus until the mid-twenty-first century. The input discharge was predicted to be greater than the output; therefore, Lake Toba could be optimized without affecting the future water level. However, the climate projections depicted a different situation, with scenarios predicting the possibility of extreme climate anomalies, demonstrating drier climatic conditions in the future. This review concludes that it is necessary to conduct an in-depth, comprehensive, and systematic study to identify the most dominant factor among the three that is causing the decrease in the Lake Toba water level and to describe the future projected water level.

There are various signs indicating that the Earth's natural environment is changing toward unfavorable direction for species, which is highly suspected to be connected with human activities. In the last century, people all over the world have realized the severity of environmental issues. In the long history, Chinese ancient had already development good rules and methods to reach balance between economic development and environment sustainability. This paper will discuss how environmental concepts forms and which methods could be applied in the future.

Estuaries are places on the earth where rivers meet oceans. When rain and snowmelt drain off the land, the fresh water collects in streams and rivers and eventually makes its way to the ocean. At the same time, the ocean has tides that push salty water upstream into the rivers. This place, where rivers and oceans mix, is called an estuary. Estuaries contain many kinds of habitats that are home to plants and animals. Many people work and live in estuaries. In this article, I describe what makes estuaries interesting and important to plants, animals, and people. I also explain how these important areas are under threat from certain human activities.

The accuracy of the intraoral digital impression systems has been previously reported to refer to the quality of the obtained data from the related scanning procedures, irrespective of the quality of the clinical outcomes and the estimated costs. Trueness and precision have been frequently found among studies in the literature as two terms describing the accuracy of the intraoral digital impression systems. Various digital impression modalities have been proposed among studies in the literature and were investigated for estimation of their accuracy. The paper aims to review and discuss the most common literature regarding the current common systems and their accuracy among the different studies in the literature. According to the results, Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC) systems appear to have the highest estimated rates of trueness and precision as compared to the other modalities while the iTero system appears to have the lowest estimated rates. However, some studies have reported contradicting results and the current evidence is mainly based on findings from in vitro investigations. Accordingly, further studies might be needed for further validation of the current evidence and strengthening the quality of the future potential implications for clinicians.
