Household saving is very important, not only for securing the future spending of the family but also for the country's economy. Using the logit analysis on data of The Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) wave three, four, and five, this chapter analyzes factors influencing, especially the role of ethnicity, upon the household savings in Indonesia. The result indicates that gender, location, and level of education are the consistent variables affecting the household saving behaviour in Indonesia across the three wave surveys. Meanwhile, as for the ethnic group variable, there are only Sunda, Batak, and Bima-Dompu that can significantly influence the people's saving behavior across the three wave surveys.

This study analyzes the impact of access to the internet and household saving behavior, in the context of the amount of savings and the saving preferences, in Indonesia. Using the fifth wave of the Indonesia Family Life Survey data, this study finds that there is a positive effect between internet access and household savings. This access includes private internet access and public internet access. Nonetheless, the effect of private internet access differs from public internet access. Private internet access positively impacts both the amount of savings and the saving preferences, whilst public internet access only increases the amount saved, not the saving preferences.

One of the most striking features of recent writing on early modern social history has been the emergence of the family as a subject of central concern. As befits an historical area being subjected to new scrutiny, much of this concern has expressed itself in the form of specialized, and often narrowly-focused articles or essays.1 To these have been added a number of more general works intended to examine the broader developments in and implications of family life in the past.2 Several themes within family history have already received considerable attention: the structure of the family, for example, a topic already rendered familiar by earlier work on historical demography; the concomitant topic of sexual practices and attitudes; and the economic role of the family, especially in its capacity as a unit of production. These are, of course, important matters, and the research carried out on them has revealed much of interest and consequence to the social historian; this should not, however, obscure the existence of a number of other significant dimensions of family life in the past which await thorough investigation.

Résumé This article explores how space gets mobilised in the performance of “family business”. The very concept of the “family business” collapses some deeply entrenched distinctions in Western modern societies, those between home and work, private and public, family life and business rationality, distinctions that are mapped over space through the creation of boundaries between work space and family space, home and office. The “family business”, especially when run from home, unsticks this ordered sense of space as familial images and business stages are collapsed. Our analysis of small family run boarding kennels focuses on the way space is used to frame different stages of action. In particular, we draw upon theatrical metaphors to explore the work that goes into the staging of identities and social relations. We first discuss the relationships between space, stages, performance and identity through a theatrical lens; we then draw upon material from our study of family run boarding kennels to explore how owner-managers use space as a malleable resource from which they carve out and assemble different stages to perform their business and themselves to different audiences. After going back into the theatre to discuss the role of stages in weaving together coherent stories in the family business or in drama, we close by exploring the limitations of the theatrical metaphor for the analysis of social life.

Moreover, because the development of communication, so this can be made as a means to build family resilience. Therefore, this article will try to examine communication systems as a significant element to build family resiliaence throught historical contex and sociological approaches, where the presentasion is by integrating, describing, and the analyzing social phenomena—modern family life patterns, changes and developments in technology, communication—using “nilai etik theory” through several rules of Islamic communication as the value of communicating in the family. So that, when viewed from “nilai etik theory” develop by Rahman, conclusions can be obtained, that there are several elements of a very close relationship to the principles of Islamic communication, development of family structure, and family resilience as a way to build a family that is a sakinah, mawaddan and rahmah.

One of the common social problems in Nigerian society nowadays is the increasing of violence against women and children, mostly by male members of a family. Unfortunately, the problem has assumed a new dimension in recent times as husbands become victims of their wives leading violence against them. Throughout the history of human existence on earth. The Qur’ān identifies nushūz as a factor that leads to family crises in marriage contracts and steps have been recommended for peaceful resolution of such disputes in the Qur’ān. However, in spite of this provision, violence against family members is on increase among Muslim families in Nigeria. Some of the questions that many will ask are whether Muslim couples are aware of the Qur’anic guidance in resolving family crises or not? To what extent do the Muslims follow the Islamic teachings in matters related to family life before, during and after disputes? How can such increasing violence be controlled following the teachings of the Qur’ān and Sunnah of the Prophet SAW? What shall be the role of Muslim women in promoting peaceful life within the family? The paper is an attempt to answer the above questions and recommend the best ways to improve family life among Muslims. This will be through analytical studies of relevant texts of the Qur’ān and Sunnah and the current realities in Nigerian Muslim families with a particular reference to Gombe metropolitan city of Gombe State, Nigeria. The paper recommends that Islamic values should be emphasized and upheld at all levels of family life by all and sundry.
